As the end of the 14-day ultimatum given by the AAUASU looms, the AAUASU, represented by the SU President, Adegbola Odunyemi and the SU General Secretary, Segun Odunayo, were guests on a programme called Citadel Radio on Orange 94.5 FM this evening.
The SU President condemned the strike action saying: ''Sincerely speaking, since July 4, we have been sent home for compulsory leave or recess. It has been up and down for us. Most of our students we lost (sic). Almost seven of our students to different kinds of death. Some of them have been engaged in unscrupulous acts. If they had been in campus, it would not have been lost. But, because of the ravaging effects of the strike, most of our students have not been finding it easy. The students are going through a lot of pain.''

When asked for the cause of the strike action, the SU General Secretary said: ''Actually, it wasn't the fault of the students. The ASUU of our institution went on strike because they were not paid their salaries and the salaries are very beneficial to the staff or to any worker. And after 31 days, everyone expected it not to take long. But, today happens to be the 62nd day. So, we are disappointed.''

When quizzed about the steps taken so far by the SU to bring an end to the strike action, the SU President said: ''As a matter of fact, we've exhaust that (sic). That is an option we've exhausted. We've been sending text messages to those that matter. One of such meetings includes the one we had with the intending Governor of Ondo State (Eyitayo Jegede). Our students are at home, idle, doing nothing. Most of them got pregnant because of this strike. So, we do not want such thing to continue. That is the reason why we issued that ultimatum for the ASUU and the (school) management to find a lasting solution to it. So many people have called that we should please give them time to strategise within the next 7 days.''

Speaking further on the 14-day ultimatum issued, the SU General Secretary said: ''It is because of the love we have that we are now giving the till SEPTEMBER 13 which happens to be on Tuesday. The SU will take a centre stage. What centre stage means, I think everyone should find out. The union has done a lot to look.''The AAUASU representatives also stressed the need to look inwards to solve the everlasting problem of strike actions in institutions nationwide by finding way ''to produce to the local communities''.

Finally, the General Secretary emphasized the non-partisan status of the Union, saying: ''Nobody is using us. If they are interested in us, they would have helped us negotiate. At this moment, we do not want this to turn political. We are fighting for the interest of our colleagues-which we promised to do.''
