PoliticsIt’s Not True We Don’t Give ‘shishi’ — Peter Obi by Yibo(op): 8:23pm On Dec 05, 2022
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has said that it was not true he runs a penny-pinching campaign (not giving ‘shishi’). But that he is more concerned about using state money for public good, if elected Nigeria’s next President in 2023.

He said this on Monday at an interactive session between him and north-eastern stakeholders in Abuja.

At the event, Obi also dismissed speculations that he was secretly fighting his former principal and standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar

On the issue of frugality, Obi said: “People say we don’t give people ‘shishi’. It is not true. But I want to use your money for your good. I want to use it to educate your children and give them opportunities.

“I don’t want to steal your money. That’s not what I am doing because it is wrong. Rather, I want to be part of you and your children.

“I want you to understand that I am committed to you. I am committed to the Northeast. I am not going to be your President from Abuja.

“I am going to be your President from the Northeast. There’s no way I will not tour every single state of Nigeria. I’ll be everywhere,” he said.

Speaking also, former Secretary to Government of the Federation and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Engr. Babachir Lawal, said the 2023 presidential poll is a must-win election because of the current state of the nation.

PoliticsIPOB, Terrorists Threat To 2023 Polls –report by Yibo(op): 6:29am On Dec 04, 2022
The Tony Blair Institute of Global Change has called on Nigerian authorities not to overlook the threats posed by the Indigenous People of Biafra, Bandits, and Boko Haram/Islamic State for West African Province terrorists to disrupt the 2023 general elections.

The organisation warned that these groups are more likely to step up their attacks to scupper the 2023 elections.

In a report released on Thursday, the organisation specifically warned that the one million Independent National Electoral Commission workers and ad hoc staff, observers, and journalists risk being attacked by IPOB, bandits, and terrorists.

The report partly read, “Three of the most active violent groups in Nigeria – Boko Haram, bandits and IPOB – threaten the 2023 election in different ways. Boko Haram’s factions will try to endanger the election because this is one of the group’s publicly declared ideological objectives.

“They will do so by stepping up attacks, including bombings in major cities while displacing some communities and ensuring remote ones are inaccessible for campaigning or holding elections. While bandits are not purposely anti-democratic, their attacks on villages and displacement of more than a million people are set to disenfranchise many Nigerians.

“Meanwhile, IPOB targets critical election infrastructure and threatens candidates and voters while attacking northern residents of the South-East region.
Additionally, all three will actively target the one million election workers who will be transported across Nigeria as well as the thousands of journalists and observers who will monitor the election.

“Boko Haram will attack on ideological basis, bandits will carry out kidnaps-for-ransom, and IPOB will seek out journalists and observers to send its separatist message while demonstrating its control over the South-East.

“If the past is any indication, coordinated attacks by each faction of Boko Haram are to be expected in the period leading up to the 2023 election.”

The organisation also said the decision of the ruling All Progressives Congress to settle for a same-faith ticket had heightened the risk for widespread social unrest.

“Past experience shows that an election can be a trigger for violence, with the potential for widespread social unrest. This risk is heightened by the ruling party selecting presidential and vice-presidential candidates drawn from the same faith as well as the spread of disinformation on social media.”

A successful election, according to the institute, can send a strong message to other African states where democracy has been backsliding.

It, however, urged the Nigerian security, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies to use the few months left before the February election to push back violent groups and secure vulnerable communities as well as liberate those already seized.

A security expert, Oladele Fajana, said with the antecedents of the groups, such attacks should be expected.

If you have been following the trends of attacks of these groups, you should expect bigger attacks from them before the elections. Our security operatives should not go to sleep because of the little attacks we are having now. We must not wait for them to launch an attack before going after them. The emphasis at this point should be on intelligence gathering.

Another security expert, Timothy Avele, called on the security agencies to prepare for pre-election and post-election security threats using advanced threat intelligence warning techniques.

Efforts to get the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Rotimi Oyekanmi, were not successful.

Calls to their lines were not answered. Responses from messages sent to them are still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.

PoliticsINEC Office Set Ablaze In Imo by Yibo(op): 6:28am On Dec 03, 2022
Hoodlums have set ablaze an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State.

They also kidnapped some construction workers who were later rescued.
The development comes days after an office of the commission was set ablaze in Ebonyi State, with electoral materials, including ballot boxes, destroyed.

Commenting on the Imo attack, National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the incident happened in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo.

In a statement, he said the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, Prof. Sylvia Uchenna Agu, reported the attack.

Festus Okoye said in a statement on Friday, Dec. 2: "The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo State, Professor Sylvia Uchenna Agu, reported that our office in Orlu Local Government Area was attacked. The incident occurred yesterday, Thursday, 1st December 2022.

"The building, which is undergoing extensive renovation following an earlier attack, was vandalised and partially set ablaze. Three out of seven construction workers were abducted but later released.

"The damage would have been more extensive but for the quick response of the Nigeria Police which has deployed its personnel to the site."

He continued: "This is one attack too many. The Commission once again expresses its concern over the spate of attacks on its facilities and the negative consequences on our preparations for the 2023 General Election."

Two daughters of President Muhammadu Buhari, Zahra and Hanan were among other notable figures who joined women from Nigeria northwest to flag-off Tinubu/Shettima presidential campaign in Katsina on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, their mother, Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, who is the Grand Patron of the Tinubu-Shetima Women Presidential Campaign Team, was represented at the ocassion by the wife of the APC Presidential candidate, Senator Remi Tinubu.

While addressing the northwestern women at the Katsina People’s Square where the flag-off held, Senator Remi thanked the Katsina Governor, Aminu Bello Masari and the good people of Katsina State for the years of friendship and support shown her husband over the years, assuring that they will not forsake the north if the party wins in 2023.

She also prayed to God to grant Masari the wherewithal to continue to contribute to the wellbeing of our nation for many more years to come.

“I want to assure you that if you vote for us we will be there for you, we will be your partner in progress.

“We will do all it takes to see that the north west, even the northeast have peace in their border,” Senator Remi said.

On her part, the wife of the APC Vice Presidential candidate, Nana Shettima, who is also the Coordinator Northwest Zone Women Campaign Team appealed to women from the zone to support the Tinubu-Shettima ticket from top to bottom come 2023 election.

Also, speaking at the flag-off, Masari assured that the people of Katsina State will stand by Tinubu till the end.

“Bola Ahmed Tinubu is at home with us in Katsina State. He has been with us since before 1999. Its not like we have known him just yesterday. We have been with him for a very long time.

“Katsina State is the home of APC and APC here in Katsina stand by him 100%. We stood by him before, we stand by him today and we will stand by him tomorrow,” Masari said.
