Parko: I applied for both overseas and local, i was shortlisted for the local it seems if you apply for both you only get shortlisted for local. Probably because it was the first applied. I think they use that as a way to reduce the candidates |

I think you should be specific what research area because power system is a broad area. most schools have power system group. But the research might not be what you are looking for. Check Iowa state, Ohio state, university of Utah, university of Tennessee Anfieldboss: Hello guys,
Please what are my chances of getting full funding for a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Electric Power Systems) with a profile of
BEng CGPA (WES Unofficial)----- 3.5/4.0 MEng CGPA (WES Unofficial)------3.36/4.0 Work Experience : 4 years with an Electricity Distribution Company Publications : None, though I hope to publish my thesis
NB: I am not through with my Masters yet, I actually got that GPA assuming I get a B in my Thesis. I intend writing my GRE in the 3rd quarter of the year, by then I should have completed my Masters.
I would also be glad if any one that know of schools with specialization in Electric Power Systems can recommend for me. |

Good day all,
Please I have a little info on how to contact prof.
I use google scholar site and search for the research area of my interest. I check on the profile of people conducting research in the area. Usually on their google scholar profile page there will be a list of research interests. If you click on any one it will take you to a page with list of people with similar research interest and their number of citation. That way you can then see all of people from different school and countries with similar interest as yours.
Thanks |

Good day. I wasn't able to come back and tell the house how the 2018 admission season ended for you. Well it ended without any admit.
I applied to four schools Gatech - PhD Electrical Engineering USC - PhD Electrical Engineering UTK - PhD Data Science and Engineering Oregon State - PhD Electrical Engineering (Data Science)
Basically my thought is I have a weak background in Data Science, so the rejects from UTK and Oregon State. A professor from Gatech contacted me and I was overwhelmed, then 5 days later I got a reject from them. For USC I believe the problem is they need hard copy transcript before processing application and I had delay in sending mine. Probably they do first come first serve.
My profile is B.Eng (Electrical Engineering) 4.26/5.00 M.Sc (Electrical and Electronics) 3.5/4 GRE Q 163 V 159 A 4.0 TOEFL 105 Publication: 5 in Signal and Image processing Work experience: 4 years in Power industry (Network Planning)
For Fall 2019 I am thinking of applying to labs that use signal processing techniques in power system.
Similarly this is to notify everyone that Fall 2019 application started yesterday for most school. |

Congratulations TheGrandChemist: I am actually over the moon right now.
Admission decision for one of the schools I applied to just arrived
School: Brigham Young university, Provo, Utah (Actually one of my top choices. Highly rated than the others I applied to with the best funding as well).
Status: Accepted
Program: PhD, Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Funding: In the affirmative, YES (GA)
However, I am still awaiting decisions from the other schools I applied to:
Louisiana state university, Ohio university, Georgia state university, University of Wyoming, University of Idaho, Oregon State University.
Profile:
Undergraduate course of study: Industrial chemistry
GPA: 3.38/4.00
GRE: 300
TOEFL: 99
No publication or research experience whatsoever. Although, I have about three years work experience.
For those of us still expectant of admission decisions, hold your horses and be positive.
And lest I forget, Mr ponpon thanks for the encouragement. I never imagined I would apply to seven schools if not for your encouragement.
Cheers |

Congrats Jumybecks: Just in....... School: University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Status: Accepted Program: PhD Cell and Molecular Biology Funding: Yes (GA)
I have been on this admission of a thing since 2015. Wrote GRE in 2016 but did not apply to any school due to finance. I sat for another GRE in Nov 2017 and I applied to four schools: U of Arkansas, University of Delaware, New Mexico State University, and MTU. Got a regret mail for U of Delaware already but nothing yet from NMSU and MTU. It's really been God and the encouragement I tap from people on this forum.
Profile: UG course: Microbiology GPA: 3.7/4.0 GRE: 307 Toefl: 105 Publication: 1 (but it was after I had already completed all my applications so it did not count really)
May those expecting admit and funding get it by His grace.... AMEN!!! |

Thanks Nwabu007: I believe your application is being reviewed by adcomm and the Prof must have taken interest in your profile. You can check the Prof's ongoing research and his lab out. If you are interested in the field, then you can inform him about it. However, acknowledge the mail. |

Thanks biikeys: The question is are you interested? If so, just reply him and mention one or two things about his research work and how it aligns with your interests. Also, attach your resume. I'm sure quite a number of people in the admissions pool would have gotten back to him already.. |

Good day all. Please I got this email from a prof. I applied to the school but I didnt mention him in my SOP and I have never emailed him before. Please what should be the best way to reply him.
Hello,
I am Prof. XXXX, faculty at the school of ECE at XXa Tech. My lab OLIVES work at the intersection of image/video processing and machine learning with applications in a number of fields including AVs, subsurface imaging, and microscopic imaging. We are anticipating to have couple of positions for PhD thesis topics and GRA under the area of image/video processing and machine learning for seismic applications, primarily seismic interpretation. If you are interested in such topic, please visit this page. Although a background in geophysics is not required, it is a plus. For questions, please contact me Bleep and Dr. XX. You can check our papers, current team, and other materials at Bleep
best regards, |

Thanks that was helpful SilentPistol: Data Science is great, I wouldn't change it if I were you. During the course of your PhD, apply for NIW. You'll most likely get it & not have to worry about green card anymore. The job prospect is good too! Companies like KPMG, PWC, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Ford, Cummins, Lockheed Martin & even oil companies hire data scientists. Your concentration is in National Security doesn't mean you have to work in that line. UTK is a good school too. You will be very alright.
If you doubt me, log on to www.indeed.com & search 'data scientists'. You're on a good path. |

femi312: Well most graduate coordinator will only give you a percentage of students admitted and not an actual number. I believe with your profile you should get admitted but then I am not on the admision committee.I have no knowledge about data Engineering nor its job prospect. If I were you I will chase electrical engineering because I want to believe it has good job prospect like some other Engineering, although you might find it hard to get jobs after graduation if you are in the Power concentration because that sector needs DOD clearance for you to work. Again, all these are based on hear say and some students experiences. I think Biikeys is in the Electrical field, You might talk to him about his experience in electrical sector. Well one of my major concerns is that the course is relatively new and without ranking, but with full funding, so how acceptable will it be in the job market. My specialization is Signal processing and Machine learning. Again since you have mentioned DOD, then it means I will also need clearance if i am to work in the US with the data science PhD since my concentration will be national security. Thanks |

Please gurus in the house I need your advice. I intent to apply to UTK for PhD in Data Science and Engineering, I have mailed the coordinator several times and she is helpful but she has so far refused to answer my question regarding the number of applicants they normally have per year. Further search shows that the program is new, it was just started last year. All she keeps telling me is that about 50% of applicants are admitted. My question is, is this course really worth it considering it is a new course, currently the course is not even ranked and how about job prospect after completion. |

Scholastica16: Good profile Yildiz.
Most PhD programs to the B-rated programs are actually funded. So it is not the "funded" ones you should be looking for, but where you can work on the research interests you have and also where your profile can be super competitive. The funding is almost an unplanned consequence of that - for a PhD that is. someone suggested Oregon state university and I checked it. To my surprise they actually have my exact research interest. Now trying to mail profs |
