The blog post listed journals that are mostly relevant to theoretical computer science. However recommender systems are generally regarded as data mining / information retrieval.
Admitwithschola:

I will choose someone with 3 quality papers published in the major journals of a field over someone with 23 papers published in the minor journals of that field.

To your question, if your 3 papers are in the best journals in your field or if they are in some very respectable journals in your field, then I imagine you would look competitive wherever you apply.

For example, if your 3 papers are published in some of these journals - https://blog.typeset.io/top-16-international-computer-science-journals-a-template-guide-3b838a7fd902, then I believe you are competitive.

It is not by the volume of your papers. Quality and impact matter.

Nevertheless, I would suggest you to still apply widely for a postdoc, no matter what your current publication record looks like. Anything can happen.

I have seen people with only promising working papers, but working papers nonetheless, get accepted into highly coveted Postdoc programmes

Thank you some much. However in my field it is highly difficult to define the best journal for it. The most relevant publication venue should be Recommender Systems conference. However it is not even listed in the approved Chinese Computer Foundation list of conferences and journals. Also while China and some European countries still publish in journals, others have concentrated on conferences.

Thank you very much for your reply. However I must point out that here in China students can hardly be corresponding authors. It's like a norm. Secondly both journals are present in WOS and are Q1 papers with impact factor of 5.9 and 4.4. But current trend in the world for my field is conference papers. Top universities and research institutions mostly publish their work in top tier conferences which my supervisor is not a fan of. She prefers the traditional journal route. I am kind of confused actually... H-index and citations would then be difficult since conferences are the preferred route. Although during my masters in Turkey I published 4 papers but not related to my current work.
wip7:

The 3 papers requested are just a graduation requirement and you are not limited to get more. To answer the question; 3 SCI papers are not enough considering the current trend in the EU now; you will be competing with graduates from other EU, USA, Africa, and Asian universities with several papers. Considering my experience as an external jury/reviewer for postdoc and grants in many EU countries; some of the important factors the reviewers check are:

----Background skills and experience
----Number of reputable journals that are accessed in WOS (very important)
--- WOS citations (excluding self-citation)
----H-index (in WOS)
----Your percentage as the first author and as the corresponding author in your papers accessed in WOS

Each of these parameters is allocated a point which varies across universities.

Hello professor. First of all I am currently a Computer Science PhD student in China. My research is on Graph Neural Networks based Sequential Recommendation. I would like your input on something please. The requirements for graduation is basically 3 SCI papers then a thesis ofcourse. My concern is will 3 papers be enough to compete for a postdoc position especially in European Universities? To add more context, the duration of the PhD is 3-4 years and so far I just completed 1.5 years. Again I have 2 papers under review, 1 at Knowledge based systems and the other at Neurocomputing. If 3 papers will be okay then I could graduate at 3 years. Thank you in advance

I work on graph neural networks for sequential data. Mainly how would sequential data be represented on graph and improving performance through using GNNs. Applications I am working on include recommendation systems and nlp.

Thank you.

Sure sure Skip connections would assist in the model convergence, considering the nature of parameters we have, its will work mainly via Long skip connections .

What aspect of deep learning are you focused or which application do you direct it to?

Congratulations on yet another good publication. I see that the paper used a FC NN. I was just wondering whether techniques like skip connections, layer normalization could enhance the model. I am a PhD student in data mining and deep learning sir.

Recent Publication (July 2020): Boron-Doped-sugar for fabrication of Energy Storage Device

Of recent, there has been increasing demand for efcient energy storage devices; supercapacitors have attracted signifcant attention as novel and competitive energy storage devices.

Approach: As natural biomass, sucrose sugar has been widely considered as a low-cost attractive carbon precursor. So, we synthesized porous carbon materials via a facile yet sustainable approach using sucrose as a carbon source and improved its electronic structure by doping with boron.

Performance: The optimum material took 275 seconds to fully charge and it took 973 seconds to completely dsicharged the energy stored; the assmebled cell was able to power small rotor fan connected to a series of led bulb.

Modeling: To understand the complex relationships between the materials and its performance, we applied machine learning-type approach via artficial neural network to obtain set of parameters that can generate optimum power.

Researcher: A graduating PhD student, Prof. Wip and other professor as supervisors.

I am currently a PhD student in data mining. I once took a course on data science and I agree with you, data science is all about visualization. We once had a 4 hour lecture on making graphs look beautiful. Continue the good work...
Ejiod:

There are 2 or if not 3 field in data analysis
Descriptive/Explorative analysis
You need to master these skills
Excel,PowerBI,Tableau,Pandas,SQL,

Predictive analysis
This is where machine learning, deep learning and NLP comes in.This forms the real basics of AI.

Both are under data science. However its advisable to have those skills set under both so you have edge.If you are just doing machine learning without knowing any visualization tools or excel it's just you playing around.

Good morning esteemed colleagues,

I received an official GRA offer which includes full tuition waiver and fees from my potential advisor yesterday for fall 2019 at University of Kansas (KU). She notified me by mail on Thursday that she had secured 2 years GRA offer for me regardless of the outcome the fellowship offer I was nominated and applied for 8 weeks ago. The offer is in addition to School of Engineering scholarship I was awarded 5 weeks back.

I greatly appreciate the effort of everyone on this thread. Full funding mail will continue to flow in for all.

This is very impressive indeed. Congratulations. But I think you should not just look at school names but also the research areas. Some schools might not have the specific research area you want. Again please consider safe schools.

So I wrote my GRE Today,
For a little back story, I just graduated a little over three months ago, and got a job immediately as a software engineer, at a fast moving company, with periodic crazy deadlines. So, I had to squeeze in time during mornings at nights to prepare, and learn as much vocabulary as I could.
Fast forward to test Day, I arrived at Dragnet prometric 2 hours before the test, did a quick review, and was first on the line. Got the quant section first, let's just say, it was deadlier than I thought, too many geometry problems, and i loathe euclidean circle geometry a lot. I moved on to the verbal; few mistakes here and there, but I just basically free styled.
At the end of the test, I was assured that I had done very terribly, and was superbly afraid to click "report scores". Then I clicked
QUANTITATIVE - 163
VERBAL - 161
TOTAL - 324

I feel i did terrible in the quant, as i focused too much on the verbal during prep, but I hope to never write GRE ever again, I accept my 324 "laidat".

Hey buddy,

Congrats man, please waste no time in applying.

Am in Cleveland state university and if you have any question or doubts, please feel free to pm me.

I don't know the department the profs contacting you are in but if it's biology, I can vouch that it's genuine. Biology department in this school is a cheerful giver of funding once you have a decent profile. I have a Nigerian friend on full funding in the department.

The application fee is quite cheap ($40), they accept unofficial GRE results and unofficial transcript during application. TOEFL is waived for all applicants from Nigeria. You literally can start and finish the application in less than 30minutes.

All in all, the final decision is yours to make.

cheers.

Thank you Sir. Will do that asap.

They want you to apply to them. What is confusing about it? They probably had someone reject them and your profile makes them feel you are a great fit to replace the person. So when he saw your profile he spoke with the department chair and they offered you the provisional admission. Provisional because you have not yet applied and they want to make a decision soon.

Go to the school's portal, department etc, apply for the program and attach all attachables. I don't think there is anything confusing.

Good morning all,
I recently sent a prof. at cleveland state university an email for an opening in his lab but he did not response. Just today I saw an email for the department Chair offering me a teaching assistantship. The offer came as an attached pdf file with my name on the letter. He also sent me an advert to apply to the department. On the teaching assistantship pdf, part of the conditions is for me to apply to the the school. I am just confused about the whole thing. He gave me 9 days to accept the offer.
First of all his email checks out on the department website. How should I proceed please.

most schools have power system group. But the research might not be what you are looking for. Check Iowa state, Ohio state, university of Utah, university of Tennessee

BEng CGPA (WES Unofficial)----- 3.5/4.0
MEng CGPA (WES Unofficial)------3.36/4.0
Work Experience : 4 years with an Electricity Distribution Company
Publications : None, though I hope to publish my thesis

NB: I am not through with my Masters yet, I actually got that GPA assuming I get a B in my Thesis. I intend writing my GRE in the 3rd quarter of the year, by then I should have completed my Masters.

I would also be glad if any one that know of schools with specialization in Electric Power Systems can recommend for me.

Good day all,

Please I have a little info on how to contact prof.

I use google scholar site and search for the research area of my interest. I check on the profile of people conducting research in the area. Usually on their google scholar profile page there will be a list of research interests. If you click on any one it will take you to a page with list of people with similar research interest and their number of citation. That way you can then see all of people from different school and countries with similar interest as yours.

Thanks

Good day. I wasn't able to come back and tell the house how the 2018 admission season ended for you. Well it ended without any admit.

I applied to four schools
Gatech - PhD Electrical Engineering
USC - PhD Electrical Engineering
UTK - PhD Data Science and Engineering
Oregon State - PhD Electrical Engineering (Data Science)

Basically my thought is I have a weak background in Data Science, so the rejects from UTK and Oregon State. A professor from Gatech contacted me and I was overwhelmed, then 5 days later I got a reject from them. For USC I believe the problem is they need hard copy transcript before processing application and I had delay in sending mine. Probably they do first come first serve.

My profile is
B.Eng (Electrical Engineering) 4.26/5.00
M.Sc (Electrical and Electronics) 3.5/4
GRE Q 163
V 159
A 4.0
TOEFL 105
Publication: 5 in Signal and Image processing
Work experience: 4 years in Power industry (Network Planning)

For Fall 2019 I am thinking of applying to labs that use signal processing techniques in power system.

Similarly this is to notify everyone that Fall 2019 application started yesterday for most school.
