Sports / Best City To Host The Olympic Games In 2020 From Africa by yoruba: 11:46am On Oct 08, 2009
The 2020 Summer Olympics (officially known as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad) are expected to be a major international sports and cultural festival to be celebrated in the tradition of the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee has yet to begin the selection process; a host city is expected to be announced in mid-2013.

IOC members have suggested that the organization should award the Games to an African nation.

The Candidate cities are:

Rabat, Morocco

Rabat will apply to host the 2020 Olympic Games. It's the first time that Morocco will place a bid to host the games.

Cape Town

Cape Town will likely bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games and intends on building on from the foundation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The bid is also supported by the Cape Chamber of Commerce. Cape Town has hosted a number of World Championships in various sports including Hockey, Fencing, Modern Pentathlon, Cycling and many others. Cape Town previously bid for the 2004 Olympic Games placing 3rd behind Rome and eventual host Athens. Approximately 70% of the venues required for the Games will be in place by 2013.

Durban

Durban’s plans to host the 2020 Summer Olympics have been boosted by the IOC deciding on that city as the venue for the IOC General Assembly’s congress in 2011. Acting chief executive of Durban Tourism Perry Moodley intimated that hosting the event was a tactical move in light of the city's plans to host a Summer Olympics. Moodley stated further: "Getting Olympic decision-makers from around the world in Durban is most important".

Then what the phuck are you talking about then.

Mbeki was president back in 2003

Mbeki became president in 1999, he started his second term in 2004.

There was a move to hand over most of the high positions to black south africans.

Leaders are chosen democratically, you'd be an idiot to ignore that.

I happen to have been in the country then, and listened to fellow Nigerians express their fears of what might potentially happen if the government continued down that path without ensuring it was not a racially motivated move on their part.

Im currently living in South Africa, I could assure that since 2002 to 2007 South Africa had economic success and it is developing quite well.

You are highly ignorant and uneducated with regards to South Africa.
Travel / Re: South-Africa: The Worst Place To Live? by yoruba: 1:35pm On Sep 25, 2009
The downturn in South Africa, you see today, started when the whites and indians in the population, in the name of healing decided to give up control to the blacks who make up the majority in the country. All the above makes no sense to the average South African who right now sees that since 2003, things have not been the same in that country.
I don't understand the 'downturn' because most South Africans(black) would agree that the country is developing(especially between 2002 and 2007) because there was a rise in the middle class from the poor class(just like most of the african countries excluding zimbabwe) and infrastructural developments for the world cup.

It seems that you are highly uneducated with regards to South Africa and I suggest you refrain from this topic.

Ive been reading most of the recent comments and I must say they have been inspiring. Its no use if you comment about another persons garden if yours looks like a pig sty, but if you help one another by sharing knowledge things could become alot better.
Its time we should stop looking at the west(they've done enough damage) for support, we should look to ourselves African brothers and help to make Africa grow.
Travel / Re: South-Africa: The Worst Place To Live? by yoruba: 10:09am On Sep 25, 2009
under apartheid whites made up only 5% of the population but appropriated 87% of the land and forced blacks who made up 95%of the population

Correction: whites make up 11%, coloreds 5%, indians/asians 4%, blacks 80%.
but reading from your comment I see that you have a good insight of South Africa. The Bantu Education System imposed by the whites was there to make black people educated enough to become only housemaids and gardeners. This system and the economical separation is the root of the social ills that black South Africans are suffering today, apartheid caused black people to become mentally and physically oppressed even today. This oppression is similar to countries like Brazil and Russia(even some areas in the US were black people reside i.e ghettoes) which also have high crime levels.

This is a sad situation and it could take generations to recover from.

@Back 2 Back

Nigeria was key in liberation of South Africa from claws of whites

There are other countries that helped South Africa get liberation, the most important country that helped SA is Angola.(study SA and Angolan history)
Thats why there is huge investments from SA businesses into Angola today because of their history.

We finance your ANC for many years. Many of your people came to study in our Uni for free!

The ANC also got finance from the UK, Australia(SA and AUS had strong political rivalry in the Anglo-Boer days) New Zealand, Canada to name a few. Most SAn politicians who went to exile studied in the UK. i.e Thabo Mbeki

The point here is that if any investment is to come to AFRICA, the WEST wants to make sure 70% goes to SA because they have invested interest in the country. Thats not level playing fields for other African countries

The main reason why the west invest in SA is because South Africa is a Advance Developing Country(Also Egypt). South Africa has the best infrastructure in Africa, also it has laws that are compared to conservative first world countries and a commercial industry that is well developed.

As such they blow-up statistics about possibly place that could get such investment and increase SA chances!

Please study South African history and economy, not everything is as obvious as you think.
TV/Movies / District 9 Recieving Good Reviews Worldwide by yoruba: 12:17pm On Sep 23, 2009
Box office

District 9 opened in 3,049 theaters in the United States and Canada on August 14, 2009, and the film ranked first at the weekend box office with an opening gross of $37,354,308. Among comparable science fiction films in the past, its opening attendance was slightly less than the 2008 film Cloverfield and the 1997 film Starship Troopers. The audience demographic for District 9 was 64 percent male and 57 percent people 25 years or older. The film stood out as a summer film that generated strong business despite little-known casting. Its opening success was attributed to the studio's unusual marketing campaign. In the film's second weekend, it dropped 49% in revenue while competing against the opening film Inglourious Basterds for the male audience, and Sony Pictures attributed the "good hold" to District 9's strong playability. The film enjoyed similar success in the UK with an opening gross of £2,288,378 (447 screens) making it the highest grossing film of the weekend ending September 6, 2009. As of September 20, 2009, it has grossed an estimated $111,622,000 in the United States and Canada and $14,336,708 in other territories, for a worldwide total of $125,958,708.
Critics

Rotten Tomatoes reported that 90% of critics gave the film a positive review, based on a sample of 227, with an average score of 7.8 out of 10. The website wrote of the consensus, "Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination, and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic." At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received an average score of 81 based on 33 reviews.

Sara Vilkomerson of The New York Observer writes, "District 9 is the most exciting science fiction movie to come along in ages; definitely the most thrilling film of the summer; and quite possibly the best film I've seen all year." Christy Lemire from the Associated Press was impressed by the plot and thematic content, claiming that "District 9 has the aesthetic trappings of science fiction but it's really more of a character drama, an examination of how a man responds when he's forced to confront his identity during extraordinary circumstances." Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwarzbaum described it as ", madly original, cheekily political, [and] altogether exciting, " John Whitbread said, "My Favorite Martian meets Mad Max, "

Roger Ebert praised the film for "giving us aliens to remind us not everyone who comes in a spaceship need be angelic, octopod or stainless steel," but complains that ", the third act is disappointing, involving standard shoot-out action. No attempt is made to resolve the situation, and if that's a happy ending, I've seen happier. Despite its creativity, the film remains space opera and avoids the higher realms of science-fiction." New York Press critic Armond White lambasted it for its outlandish premise and perceived racial insensitivity toward its apartheid allegories. He asserts that "Blomkamp and Jackson want it every which way: The actuality-video threat of The Blair Witch Project, unstoppable violence like ID4 plus Spielberg's otherworldly benevolence: factitiousness, killing and cosmic agape. This is how cinema gets turned into trash."

I have not seen the movie, but I read some of the reviews on the internet and the movie got a lot of good reviews.
Some even say that this movie was the best Sci-fi movie this year and is currently sitting @ no.2 in the American box office and no.1 in the UK.
From a 30million$ budget movie, its now on the way of receiving more than 100million$ profit in the US alone.

@European
Most of the crime in SA occurs in the Slum and the poor areas especially Johannesburg which has some of the highest levels of crime in the world. Whereas cities like Cape Town, Paarl, Port Elizebeth and many more have historical value and been preserved for many years thats why "ironically" they have one of the lowest crime rates in Africa.
Thus South Africa is an interesting country because it has the best and the worst of everything, Cape Town is considered more beautiful than cities like London and considered one of the best cities to visit, whereas Johannesburg is literally termed as the most scariest place to visit in the world but it is the city with the biggest economy in Africa.

One interesting fact is that South Africa has the biggest ratio of police per person in the world, this is one of the attributing factors that contribute to the steady decrease in most of the crime levels you mentioned and which is currently visible in the CBD of Johannesburg.

Back to the topic, Cape Town has a very rich and diverse history spanning from 1486, it overtook Cairo as the main tourist destination in Africa. Cape Town is also noted for its architectural heritage known as the Cape Dutch of which its a combination of architectural traditions of the Netherlands, Germany and France. The Cape Winelands and in particular the towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek are popular day trips from the city for sightseeing and wine tasting.

Approximately 1.5 million tourists visited in Cape Town during 2004, bringing in a total of R10 billion in revenue. The forecasts for 2006 anticipate 1.6 million tourists spending a total of R12 billion. The most popular areas for visitors to stay include Camps Bay, Sea Point, the V&A Waterfront, the City Bowl, Hout Bay, Constantia, Rondebosch, Newlands, Somerset West, Hermanus and Stellenbosch.

Travel / Cape Town Voted "best City" In The World By Telegraph Travel by yoruba: 11:49am On Sep 22, 2009
Located on the shores of Table Bay, Cape Town is one of the world’s top tourist destinations and has now been voted the ‘Best World City’ in the 2008 Telegraph Travel Awards…

Stunning Cape Town in South Africa fended off competition from major tourist cities like San Francisco and Sydney to claim the top spot in the recent awards.

The awards, which polled 40,000 people, also saw South Africa claim a place in the top three of the ‘Best non-European Country’ category.

A whopping 92 per cent of respondents said that the credit crunch will have no effect on holiday destination choices. The top destinations on earth were voted as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Canada, whilst top cities were Cape Town, San Francisco, Sydney and Vancouver.

Situated on the southwestern tip of Africa, Cape Town is recognised as one of the most beautiful places on earth. Offering a range of attractions, breathtaking sights and endless activities, it is a year-round holiday destination with friendly people, a mild climate and rich cultural heritage.

Known as the ‘Mother City,’ Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa and has a cultural heritage spanning more than 300 years.

It also has the top five national tourist attractions in South Africa, including Table Mountain; the V&A Waterfront, a unique shopping and holiday experience on a scenic working harbour; Robben Island, the former home of Nelson Mandela; the Cape Town Wine Routes, where some of the world´s best wines are produced and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, internationally acclaimed as one of the great botanical gardens of the world.

Cape Town Tourism CEO Mariëtte du-Toit Helmbold said, “We are thrilled with the news.

“Cape Town is well-placed to receive visitors looking for value for money and an authentic experience.

“Cape Town has so much more to offer that visitors generally end up coming back to see and do more,” she added.

South African Tourism UK Country Manager Lebohang Mokhesi said, “Value for money and the strength of the pound compared with other world currencies appear to have been a deciding factor for readers when voting for Cape Town.

“Cape Town is one of the world’s most beautiful cities and to receive such an accolade from consumers themselves is great recognition of the wonderful tourism offering it has developed.

“Word-of-mouth advertising was a key component to spreading the good word about South Africa in the UK.

“It is near impossible for anyone to visit and not share their experiences with friends and family on their return. During this period of economic downturn, value for money is at the forefront of traveller’s minds.

“South Africa has always offered value for money and, with the current exchange rate as it stands, visitors’ money goes even further,” she added.

Cape Town was also recently voted one of ten cities in the world that are most likely to become a global sustainability centre by 2020.

But, remember it’s not all about the destination; it’s about the journey too. The awards found people’s favourite airlines to be the long-haul specialists Singapore Airlines, Virgin, Emirates and Qatar Airways.

There is a reason why University of Cape Town is the best university in Africa aside from the facilities and teachers they have, do your research and do not presume things.
University of Ibadan is probably the best underdeveloped university in Africa as for the best in Africa, they are far from achieving that goal.
Education / Re: University Of Ibadan Wins Zain Competition For African Universities by yoruba: 10:55am On Sep 16, 2009
@U1
I'm beginning to lose respect of your intelligence because you hardly even checked the methodology in which Webometrics use to come to there conclusion but yet you comment.
FACT University of Ibadan is light years behind University of Rhodes Ive proved it.
aside that the University of Ibadan is way ahead of it
Prove it, this can only remain an opinion until you use facts to justify your point.
-by winning some dodgy competition for underdeveloped countries?
Besides, competitions doesn't say much for comparing quality of education between universities.
I assume this is an 'academic' argument so you can only prove your point by using facts.
Education / Re: University Of Ibadan Wins Zain Competition For African Universities by yoruba: 1:53pm On Sep 15, 2009
I just gone through the competition website and I saw that it was for countries that needed development in there universities. The countries that were eligible to participated are:
Ghana
Kenya
Malawi
Nigeria
Sierra Leone
Tanzania
Uganda
Zambia
Meaning that this was some charity show aimed for the underdeveloped universities in Africa. So congratulations University of Ibadan for winning some charity event. In fact, my university might even donate some money to that university so that people like superstar1 get properly educated.
Education / Re: University Of Ibadan Wins Zain Competition For African Universities by yoruba: 12:42pm On Sep 15, 2009
Have you ever thought of the fact that the show was in English? And how many countries in Africa are anglo-phone, if I may ask you? Though I didn't watch the show 100%, I watched only one edition, and I'm figuring that for all the anglophone countries, their must have been some kind of qualifier before the final 10 countries were chosen.
That's cause there was no Southern African universities in that competition. "Anglophone countries" South Africa, Botswana, Namibia(Not even Egypt) all have respected universities. And none of those countries universities got an invite to participate not even through the 'qualifiers' I 100% assure you.
Since you are so proud to be attending the University of Rhodes, which to you is better than the University of Ibadan, why is that your school not represented? Stop complaining and stand up for the champion!
Now im not even gonna try to compare University of Rhodes and University of Ibadan, but I just checked the rankings on the web for top universities in Africa and I found University of Ibadan sitting way below at no. 81(top 9000 in the world) and University of Rhodes at no. 5(top 1000 in the world) thats a huge gap.
http://www.webometrics.info/top100_continent.asp?cont=africa
And the obvious fact is that South Africa has the best universities in Africa by a long mile that's why they never got an invite grin grin grin
The more I think about it, the more I get to think that this competition was just a joke. grin grin grin grin
but as I said if you wanna throw a party go ahead, see who cares(yet alone joining,  grin)
