Politics / Akeredolu, Adebayo Head Reconciliation Teams For Tinubu by Yoruba1stson: 6:21am On Sep 15, 2022
What happened to the Southwest during the defunct Second and Third Republics when the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the late business mogul, Moshood Abiola, must not repeat itself next year, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday.

The party, through its National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Chief Isaacs Kekemeke, took a bold step yesterday by setting up reconciliation committees and high-powered contact team.

The role of the team, under the chairmanship of Ondo State Governor Olurotimi Akeredolu, the APC said, is to present its presidential standard bearer and other candidates in next year’s election to eminent personalities in the region for support.

According to the APC leader, the six other committees would reconcile all aggrieved party members in the region ahead of the elections.

Kekemeke dropped the hint while briefing reporters after its meeting at the Oyo State APC chapter secretariat in Ibadan.

He explained that the decision was taken to ensure Tinubu’s victory and inauguration as the next president, pointing out that Southwest will not lose another opportunity to produce the president after the bitter experience of the late Obafemi Awolowo and Moshood Abiola.

The party leader said: “We are have resolved to change the narrative. What happened to Awolowo and Abiola must not happen again. It is a lifetime opportunity to produce the next president and we won’t let it slip by. Some say we sound sentimental.
Why not, if the best candidate is from your zone, if he is the most experienced and he is a man with antecedent? It is not all just because he is from here but because he is the best. We urge all Southwest indigenes to rally behind Tinubu and ensure that he is
elected the next president.”

According to Kekemeke, the Akeredolu-led special committee will engage eminent citizens who are essentially APC leaders and others that wield influence in their communities and states.

The zonal leader further explained that the party was willing to concede certain demands in its bid to build inclusiveness.

His words: “You can’t rule out give-and-take.
Assurances will be given. We will assure them that no one will be discriminated against. We recognize the sacrifices and the efforts they have made and their efforts in seeking tickets of the party. We will give assurance, plead and offer a proposal that will be a win-win for all of us in the future.”

He said: “We need every leader of the party to participate actively in the process of winning the 2023 elections. Other members of the special committee are the National Secretary, Sen. Iyiola Omisore; Kekemeke, the six state chairmen and the zonal woman leader.”

He also named Industry, Trade and Investment Minister Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo and Chief Pius Akinyelure as chairman and co-chairman of a Zonal Advisory Committee.

Members of the committee, including Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Pastor Bankole Oluwajana, Chief Henry Ajomale, and the zonal secretary Wunmi Bewaji, who will serve as secretary, have a mandate to work with party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for the success of the APC.

In Akure, the Ondo State capital, former Works Minister and National Chairman of the Southwest Agenda for Tinubu (SWAGA), Prince Dayo Adeyeye, led thousands of party faithful on sensitisation walk to project the presidential candidate.

The walk, staged through major streets, had traders and artisans as participants.
Adeyeye told participants that Tinubu remained the best candidate to take Nigeria to loftier heights.

A former Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Oyo State, Bosun Oladele, said no presidential candidate could match the one-time Lagos governor in terms of human and infrastructural
development.

Oladele stated that SWAGA visited traditional rulers in the Southwest to let them know about their agenda.

He said: “We are going to campaign till we win this coming election. Winning the general election, we must give sizeable attention to the entire populate with a lot of concentration on the youths and women. That was why we have Youths Solidarity Walk for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and we have learned people among ourselves and none of us leading this campaign is a candidate in any election.

“We choose Ondo State for the commencement of this campaign in order to perfect our strategy and to let everybody have a sense of belonging and of course Ondo state is one of our home state so if not Ondo state why not.”

Another party chieftain, Oyetunde Ojo, said: “Tinubu as we all know is not a stranger in this country, and we have to believe in his ambition, he is a father, responsible and a straight forward person who can move this country forward.

“So, we are telling the good people of Akure, Ondo state, to vote for their son, Tinubu, he will take this nation to a greater height. The SWAGA is going from ward to ward to campaign for Tinubu because it is our turn in the Southwest and that is why we are appealing to our youths and women to give Tinubu a trial.”

Politics / APC Campaigns: Tinubu, Shettima’s Wives Seek Women’s Participation by Yoruba1stson: 7:45pm On Sep 14, 2022
The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, on Wednesday, received Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and Hajiya Nana Shettima, wife of his running mate, Kashim Shettima, at the Tinubu Campaign Headquarters in Abuja.

Lalong, who met with the two women behind closed doors alongside the Secretary of the campaign council, Hon. James Faleke, Assistant Secretary, Christopher Tarfa, and Chief of Staff to the DG, Hon. Yakubu Dati, said the visit was part of the engagement and consultations toward a successful campaign for the victory of the APC in the 2023 general election.

A statement released on Wednesday by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Public Affairs, Dr Macham Makut, after the visit, gave more insight into the meeting.
He said, “Senator Oluremi Tinubu informed the Director-General that they were at the Headquarters to strategise on the participation of women in the forthcoming campaigns in line with the decision of the APC to carry all women along by ensuring that they play a greater role in delivering the presidential candidate and other candidates of the party.
“She also intimated Governor Lalong of the ongoing mobilisation of various women support groups for Tinubu/Shettima as well as engagement particularly at the grassroots which will prove very crucial to the victory of the APC during the elections.”

According to the statement, the wife of Bola Tinubu and Nana Shettima had also paid a similar visit to the National Secretariat of the APC where they equally held engagements with the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

The statement added, “Governor Lalong welcomed them to the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Headquarters and assured them that the APC Presidential Campaign Council working with Tinubu, had put in place a plan for a robust campaign that would deeply involve women and youths.

“He noted that women constituted a large voting force in Nigeria and many of them were passionate about the APC as well as Tinubu and Shettima who had, over the years, invested so many resources, time and programmes to empower women.

“Lalong promised them that the campaign council would give them all the support to enable them mobilise women in all parts of the country, particularly at the grassroots for the success of the Tinubu/Shettima ticket and the APC in general.

“The Director-General and his guests also went round the Campaign Office to see ongoing work at the headquarters.”

Politics / It Will Take A Miracle For Peter Obi To Win, Says Hayatu-deen by Yoruba1stson: 8:59am On Sep 14, 2022
A former presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, says it will take a miracle for Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to win the 2023 presidential election.
According to him, there are only two parties in Nigeria – the PDP and the All Progressives Congress – and Obi should have joined an established party to pursue his presidential ambition.
“The conventional wisdom is that if someone like Peter Obi had a 10 to 15 years project to create a magnificent machine that is robust, that has structures over a period of seven to 10 years, then he can become a force to be reckoned with.
“That is the view that I personally hold and I could be completely wrong. He might prove me wrong. I do not know but in a developing country such as ours…I will wait to see such a miracle happen in this election season,” Hayatu-Deen said on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm aired on Tuesday.
Obi, a former Anambra State governor, was running mate to PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, back in 2019. Obi, however, dumped PDP for Labour Party in May. Whilst Atiku announced Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate, Obi picked Yusuf Baba-Ahmed.
Speaking on the programme, Hayatu-Deen said Obi’s candidacy will not in any way hurt Atiku’s presidential ambition.
“President (Muhammadu) Buhari is not on the ballot; he was a cult figure and therefore a lot of people
who voted in the North voted for him,” he said, noting that Atiku will garner President Buhari’s votes in the North.
Hayatu-Deen further said it will be difficult for Obi to win the hearts of northern voters in next year’s
general elections.
“I do not how much work Peter Obi has done and will do to appeal to northern sentiments. I really do not know because it is still a long campaign season but what I can tell you is that the PDP is not going to leave any part of northern Nigeria untouched.
“PDP is very strong in the South-South. A bit of the South-West votes, I can guarantee you that. In the South-East, it will run very strong because the information available to me, indicates that there is no particular person that is strong,” he said.

Politics / We’re Ready To Tap Into Tinubu’s Proposed Cassava, Maize Economy - Farmers by Yoruba1stson: 7:45am On Sep 14, 2022
Farmers across the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have expressed their readiness to tap the opportunities in cassava and maize value chain as proposed by the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

The farmers, under the auspices of Asiwaju Farmers Forum, stated this yesterday in Abuja.

The group said their resolve to tap from the abundant opportunities in staples such as cassava and maize followed Tinubu’s assurance to invest massively in the entire agriculture value chain if elected president next year.

Leader of the group and National Coordinator, Nigerian Farmers Group and Cooperative Society (NFGCS), Mr. Retson Tedheke, said there must be a different approach to tackle the economic challenge for Nigeria to work.

He noted that the focus must be on productivity, processing, warehousing, rural stability and vocation manpower development that is focused on maize, cassava, yam, soy beans, palm trees, sesame, date palm, coconut, cattle, goats, sheep, fish, pigs among others.
He said: “Our population is mostly not employable except in the art of farming. When a population is as uneducated as we are, we look for the low hanging fruits to get us rolling and working in large numbers even with machines. Our people, particularly in rural Nigeria, need to be engaged in large numbers before they engage us violently with devastating consequences.

“Our imports must be on how to add value to what we can produce locally, it must be on extra jobs; it must be focused on nothing but managing the evolving rural Nigeria quagmire and turning what is currently becoming a curse to blessing.

“The problem of Nigeria is Nigerians. Our failure as a country is our fault as a people. The USD is not coming down soon. Our hunger is not going away.

We cannot import everything and expect our people to be free from the challenging economic mess we face.

“There are no immediate solutions outside agbado (maize) and cassava. No place will be safe if we continue to play with a hungry and angry uneducated population. Lagos is working even if slowly and steadily. Nigeria will work.

“Holland makes about $5billion annually from exporting flowers and $100billion annually from agriculture and agribusiness. Those who ridicule agriculture as the only foundation for national development are naive and ignorant about real national economic growth.”
