Car Talk › Join Me To Thank Da Lord Oo: by youngchopper(op): 12:40pm On Jan 15, 2013
Jsut 8months ago i went to ibadan to buy 2001 nissan pathfinder from a nairalander twentycent! Bougth the ride. Due to my bad experience on overheatin from ma puj 607. My mindset told me that the temperature guage that was just midwayhalf was overheatin! Cuz water was always boiling in ma water rev! Boom! I tool it to a road side mech! Vooom he put in some small iron n ma fan was permanent! Since that day it look as if ma gear box was bad, car wount climb hill; other cars overtake me n laff @ ma VQ 3.5 engine. Went 4 series of scan no way! Just 2day a nairalander said i should check if ma thermostart was in place cuz i complaind of water shortage in ma radiator. I did n it was still intact. I took the the fan out n opened it. Revomed that iron inside it. Put it back started the engine! Hmm to ma suprice the car was noiseless, the gear dragin disappeard, ma car gaind so much speed dat i now laff @ those dat do such to me b4! I thank all the gurus in the house 4 their knowledgeable support n their auto advices . Once a gain am happy!

Jucol: @youngchopper:

I can bet that your Pathfinder has high fuel consumption. The thermostat has been removed and the coolant temp sensor(not your engine temperature) is not working. Bros your engine is cold and gradually getting COLD( ITS DYING). It is clearly written on the radiator cover: "Do not open when hot" do you think Nissan is stupidhuh
the engine gets hot quickly! But for fuel consumption hmm na die! Would sharply check 4 the termostat if its still in place! The water in the reservior always boil. I guess it might be ma fan datz moves imediatly ma engine starts. Though the fan is directly from the engine!

zhukafa: There's surely going to be a tiny leak somewhere . You can check it, first , tell your mechanic to loose down the radiator, secondly , take it to where they flush radiators and flush it, then after flushing it, if the have a good water hose with good pressure, then put the water hose at either one of the ends in the radiator, make sure to cover all other outlets and you would surely see a leak.

Thanks
thanks man

bhurlarh: The SES light did come up a few days back and I took it to my electrician who used the OBD-II to scan and he "claimed" to have corrected it..It worked fine all along(for like the past 3 days) and it came up with that now. I was told that the SES light doesn't really mean anything serious. Maybe just some fluids or related issue but not complex..same doesn't seem to be the case with me..please I need more info and probably the extent of likely damage before I take a mechanic there.
man i advice u run a scan on ur car! Uf its expensive in ur area would advice u buy urs n do it ur self.get the codes n let dem gurus up in here help u out.

bro funny enough my pathyfinder doesnt vomit wen i open the cap no matter how hot the engine. Doesnt overheat at all. But always short water every 2days. No leak! Wat do u think?

Ikenna351: What a terrible mistake you made! I tried so had to avoid this post, but you just spoilt the whole thing.

You said my trip stories were all rubbish because i encountered one problem or the other with my Lions, meaning, none of them is reliable enough to be travelled with. Do we really have to allow our emotions make us sound foolish just to prove a point? You should have kept me out of it, because am going to embarrass you. Na you find my trouble!

The first trip story thread, journey with my 605 V6 to East. I stated that the car radiator electric fans were originally a used before i bought the car as Nigerian used. The fans original connections were bypassed and connected to be spinning constantly as soon as ignition is switched. So, as soon as i got the car, i reconnected the fans to run as factory. But i had to buy and use new flexible wire to run the connections, since the original wires of the fans connections to the trigger were cut off and removed. Now due to the terrible traffic jam i encoutered on the journey between Gwagwalada and Lokoja, the fans were running often and considering the fans need high volts from their relays to spin faster, the new wires i installed couldnt bear the high volts, so they gradually got burnt and break, which happened 3 days later, while i was on Enugu-Onitsha highway. When i pulled out the wires, it was only the new wires i installed that got burnt. But the small remaining wires the car came with that i connected the new ones to make up the cut off wires, didnt even show any sign of burn, even till today. Now, is it the car's fault? Did the car came with the fake wire that got burnt? What is your point then?

The 2nd trip story with my 505 V6, just last month. The car viscous fan bearing failed in 2011. Instead of replacing the bearing or the entire viscous coupling, i decided to convert it to electric fan, which i gathered releases the sapped hp of the mechanical from the engine and gives better fuel economy. So i went to APO, tried France line, but didnt get one that marched the radiator. I went to Japanese line and got one. I installed it myself and used the radiator sensor as the trigger. But because they have opened or worked on the fan before i bought and installed, i didnt know that they forgot to lock the fans blade firmly with a washer. Now one the journey, i stated how i encountered a terrible traffic at 9th mile. The long spining of the fan in traffic made the bolt that was driving the blades pulled off and fell inside the fan's motor, since it was not tight enough on the blade housing. I opened it and got it fixed. Again, whose fault it is? The car? Did the car came with the fan? Did the failure of the fan madesthe car unreliable, even though it was caused by stupid auto technician that worked on the fan before it was sold to me, which i didnt even know it was not tokunbo?

Next time pick someone else, when seeking attention. Because i know Peugoet, especially my car, damn well. Stick to your japs, say the little you know and keep quite.

Did you try to find out how many trips i have done with those Lions since i own them? So you thought those two trips were the only trips i have done with them? What a joke!

Ikenna.

Nightshift: Each to his taste, but nobody should use Nigeria as a yardstick for passing judgment on which of the two countries(Germany , Japan ) makes the best vehicles. Nigerian drivers are as dull as a harmattan pussy in judging who makes the best automobile. My BMW gives me everything i want in a car - a passion to drive.
bro u ar going off topic. No body is sayin ur beamer aint gud, the topics states yy 9jarians preffer japan in quote to german or french cars? Wat i did is to tell u reason yy a developin nation like ours cant afford such cars. Not dat dey ar not gud nor their perfomance aint gud? Just dat the maintenance is @ the high side. How much is ur bmw dat u ar makin noise dat nigerian drivers av dull brains like harmatern? Its all about taste. The reason why nigerian preffer japan to german is cuz jap autos ar pocket friendly.

And u want nigerians to petronise such rubish brand? Everytin in life is luck. U might use car A or B and it wount giv u anyproblem dats ur luck period!

yungboss: It is the nigerian mentality, the Japanese cars have Mechanics on every nook and cranny, the European cars are too detailed for the Nigerian mechanic...imagine my BMW 320i, when you consider its age (19years) and Mechanics inability to fix a simple vacuum issue that i had for over 4 months, you know that's apalling and shameful...something that took me less than 15 minutes to fix up, with only a simple screwdriver was taken to five Mechanic shops, and none could identify the simple cause of dark fumes emission and stalling. sometimes i do not worry about this subject issue...
Secondly, our mechanics are not willing to learn new things, they work by trials. This was made clearer to me from my last experience, A (BMW) mechanic does not devote his time to source out details elsewhere...the internet is the best places to learn alot, but which mechanic uses information from the internet to enhance their job?
d same happend to ma pejout 607. Na so dem destroy the car 4 me oo. Since den av joined the japan trend. Wetin man go do na. @ lease ma vQ 3.5 engine can compete wit any german machine: if u cant beat dem join dem!

automaticcars: Why do Nigerians think Japanese vehicles are better than Europeans, Koreans, Americans and German vehicles? The world is changing everyday and technology is swiftly changing the way vehicles opereate. There are parts available for most vehicles in Nigeria. I have been watching and asking myself why Nigerians don't patronize other vehicle brands except Japanese brands. In the last seven years, there have been recalls after recalls of all Japanese brands on monthly bases. Has anyone ever heard where German, Korean, or any other european vehicles being recalled for major flaw like the toyotas, hondas, nissan, and co? What is the problem with Nigerians when making car choices? Imagine someone who has never bought or used a car before in his life telling me how bad European vehicles are. I asked him how did he know European vehicles are bad? He told me he heard it from people before.

Ladies and gentlemen, why do Nigerians mostly buy Japanese vehicles and not other brands?
bro will u buy a car dat no mechanic and parts ar scarce due to few people. This are tins to consider when buying a car. Abi u wan dey ship the car to europe 4 maintancehuh??

Nice things u guys ar doing. Pls got code p0110 my IAT sensor is missing. And my 2001 pathy lacks power or strugle with the gear climbing hills. Can it be the absence of IAT sensor? And wat might be the inplication of driving this car. It's usually located somewhere in the intake air ductwork, but can be located in the intake manifold on some applications. It is usually a two wire sensor supplied with a 5 volt reference wire (which also acts as a signal wire) from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and a ground wire.

As air passes over the sensor the resistance changes. This change in resistance affects the 5 Volts supplied to the sensor accordingly. Colder air causes higher resistance and higher signal voltage & warmer air lower resistance and lower signal voltage. The PCM monitors this change in the 5 Volts and calculates air temperature. If the PCM detects a voltage that is out of normal operating range for the sensor, P0110 will set.

SymptomsThere may be no noticeable symptoms other than MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination. However, it could be possible that you may experience poor drivability complaints.

CausesPotential causes of the P0110 DTC include:

IAT sensor shifted out of airflow
Bad IAT sensor
Shorted to ground or open on signal circuit to IAT
Open in ground circuit to IAT
Poor connection at IAT (backed out terminals, broken connector locks, etc.)
Bad PCM
Possible SolutionsFirst visually check that the IAT is in place and hasn't been dislodged. As a quick check of the IAT, use a scan tool & check for IAT reading with KOEO (Key on engine off). If the engine is cold, the IAT reading should be the same as the CTS (Coolant temperature sensor) reading. If it shows more than a few degrees variance (for example, if it indicates a temperature extreme like negative 40 deg. or 300 deg. then obviously there's a problem) unplug the IAT and do a resistance test across the two terminals.

Each sensor will have different resistances so you'll have to get that info from a repair manual. If the resistance of the IAT sensor isn't within specs, replace the sensor. There should be some resistance, so if it measures infinite resistance, replace the sensor.

Having said that, here is a little more diagnostic info if that doesn't take care of it:

1. If your KOEO IAT reading is at the high extreme, like 300 deg. (which obviously is inaccurate), disconnect the IAT sensor. If the reading now shows the lowest extreme (-50 or so), then replace the IAT sensor. However, if when unplugging the IAT, the reading doesn't change then turn off the ignition and disconnect the PCM connector. Use a voltmeter to check for continuity between a good ground and the signal wire to the IAT. If there is continuity, then repair short to ground on the signal wire. If there is not continuity, then the PCM may have a problem

2. If your KOEO IAT reading is at the low extreme, again disconnect the IAT connector. Check that there is 5 Volts on the signal and the other is grounded.
Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2)

What does that mean?A knock sensor tells the engine computer when one or more of your engine's cylinders are "knocking", that is, exploding the air/fuel mixture in a way that delivers less power and can be damaging to the engine if prolonged. The computer uses this information to tune the engine so that it doesn't knock. If your knock sensor wasn't operating properly, so that it was always indicating a knock, the engine computer's response may have been to change the ignition timing on your engine. Knock sensors generally bolt into or thread into the engine block. This P0330 code may show up intermittently or the Service Engine light may be lit constantly. Other knock sensor related DTC codes include P0325.

SymptomsYou may notice drivability problems including a lack of power and perhaps some hesitation. There may also be other symptoms.

CausesA code P0330 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

The "B" knock sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
There is a wiring short/fault in the knock sensor circuit
Possible SolutionsCheck the resistance of the knock sensor on bank 2 (compare it to factory specs)
Check for broken/frayed wires leading to the sensor
Replace the knock sensor on bank 2

a. If you have 5 volts present and a good ground, jumper the two terminals together. Now the reading on the scanner should be at the high extreme. If it is, replace the IAT sensor. But if it stays low even after you jumper the two wires together, then there may be an open in the wiring harness or a problem with the PCM.

b. If you don't have 5 Volts present, then check for reference voltage back at the PCM connector. If it's present there but not at the IAT sensor, repair the open in the signal wire.

Other IAT sensor and circuit related DTCs: P0095, P0096, P0097, P0098, P0099, P0109, P0111, P0112, P0113, P0114
