PhonesSamsung Announces BBM For Android – Blackberry Still Quiet by Youngzedd(op): 5:05pm On Aug 06, 2013
BlackBerry still hasn’t announced official launch details for BBM for Android or BBM for iOS, but that didn’t stop Samsung from making an official announcement this week. According to a press release picked up by N4BB, Samsung’s African arm has announced that BBM for Android will be available in Google Play and the Samsung app store “soon,” and that it will be free for all Galaxy smartphones. No specific details or launch timing were provided. Last week, BGR shared the first picture of BBM for Android running on a handset and the app has reportedly been made available to early beta testers ahead of its public release. The full press release from Samsung follows below.

Samsung to offer BBM in Samsung App store for all GALAXY Smartphone devices

5th August, 2013 – Today, Samsung has announced that the upcoming BBM™ app will be available in the Google Play and the Samsung App store soon and available to all Samsung GALAXY smartphone consumers across Africa.

Says George Ferreira, VP and COO of Samsung Electronics Africa: “At Samsung we are all about collaboration, innovation and driving consumer experience based on choice, value and customisation to suit every lifestyle. As such, bringing a top tier messaging service such as BBM is another way that we are expanding the catalogue of our messaging services and offering customers an amazing way to stay instantly connected with colleagues, friends and family.”

BBM will form part of Samsung Messaging Hub as a complementary addition to the current slate of propriety and third party messaging services that Samsung customers enjoy – all aimed at empowering consumers to connect with each other in better ways using text messaging. Offering BBM on GALAXY smartphones in Africa will give Samsung customers access to the BBM social network, including BBM chats, multi-person chats and and BBM Groups, which allows BBM customers to create groups of up to 30 people, as well as the ability to share photos and voice notes.

“It is important to strike a balance between developing high-tech smartphones that carry brands in to the future and creating a sustainable ecosystem that primarily supports the needs of consumers that use these devices. Value added services are considered a prerequisite in the fast-paced, challenging environment that exists today and as a result, we will continue to drive innovation through our smart hub functionalities to ensure our consumers have the choice which they desire,” concludes Ferreira.

“BBM provides one of the best and most robust mobile messaging experiences today. BBM has always set the standard for mobile instant messaging and we are thrilled to bring this experience to Samsung customers across Africa,” said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President BBM at BlackBerry. “BBM is loved by people who rely on fast, trusted messaging, along with the immediacy that our delivered and read statuses bring. Samsung customers will soon join the BBM nation in its love of the “D” and “R” notifications.”

The companies have also agreed to joint marketing efforts to showcase BBM for Android to customers and to mobile users across Africa.

At launch, the app will be available for download from the Samsung and Google Play Stores, at no cost.

PoliticsBoko Haram Attacks Military, Police Bases In Borno Again by Youngzedd(op): 2:13am On Aug 06, 2013
Thirty-five people, including two soldiers and a policeman, have been killed in two separate gunfights between security forces and members of the militant Islamist sect, Boko Haram, in Borno State.

The killings took place on Sunday when the sect members launched attacks on a riot police base in Bama, a town close to the Cameroun border, and the Multi-National Joint Task Force base in Malam Fatori.

A third incident in Gwoza, another Borno State community, was said to have resulted in the death of unspecified number of Boko Haram commanders.

They all took place just as the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said that after a preliminary investigation, she was convinced that acts attributed to Boko Haram amounted to crimes against humanity.

Members of the violent sect had launched a similar attack in Bama on May 7 this year, killing 55 persons, including 22 policemen and 14 prison officials.

In the Sunday attacks, a policeman and 17 members of the sect, were killed and two soldiers injured. Two other soldiers and 15 insurgents also died in the Malam Fatori onslaught.

The spokesperson for the MNJTF , Lt.Col. Sagir Musa, confirmed the Bama and Malam Fatori attacks, in a statement on Monday.

He said, "During the incident in Bama, Bama Local Government Area, troops recovered four Toyota Hilux vans, 10 AK-47 rifles and magazines, two G3 rifles and 10×4 40mm bombs.

"Other weapons recovered from the terrorists were three RPG tubes, 85 rounds of special ammunition, three motorcycles, among others.''

He said another group of suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched an attack on Malam Fatori.

"Similarly at about 10 am on the same day(Sunday), some Boko Haram terrorists armed with sophisticated weapons attacked a MJTF location at Malam Fatori in Abadam LGA. The attack led to the death of two soldiers and 15 Boko Haram terrorists but the situation in both places has returned to normal," Musa disclosed.

Meanwhile, the special forces are said to have intensified action against Boko Haram members in Gwoza hills.

It was learnt that a majority of the soldiers that returned from the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations were deployed in Borno State last week to intensify the fight in Gwoza.

A highly placed security source said on Monday that the special forces and the Boko Haram members engaged themselves at the Gwoza area of the state for the greater part of Sunday.

The source said that several people, including commanders of the sect whose identities were not disclosed, were among the dead.

He added that while there was still a heavy security presence in the area, it was believed that the area had been swept by the special forces.

The source said, "There was an attack by the special forces on some people who were trying to flee the Gwoza area believed to be harbouring some top commanders of Boko Haram.

"The corpses have yet to be indentified but they are believed to be leaders of the sect." When one of our correspondents contacted the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, he admitted that there was an ongoing military operation at the Gwoza area of the state.

Olukolade said that the Special Forces were carrying out a holistic mopping-up operation in the mountains of Gwoza.

"All I can tell you is that there is a mopping-up operation going on at Gwoza, and the operation is expected to be thorough too," he added.

PoliticsThe War Within: Presidency, APC In War Of Words by Youngzedd(op): 7:18am On Aug 05, 2013
The Presidency on Sunday blasted APC leaders saying that they were not only unprogressive but also describing them as "politically expired" politicians. However, the APC reacted swiftly, saying Nigerians knew very well that most of the PDP leaders were septuagenarians and octogenarians.

APC national leaders – Chief Bisi Akande is 74 years, Maj.-Gen. Muhamadu Buhari,70; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, 61 and Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, 61. The PDP National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, is 76; Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, is 80 and Chairman, Disciplinary Committee, Umaru Dikko, is 77.

But the Presidency, through the Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said with the "politically expired" leaders in the APC, there was no way it would be a threat to the PDP.

It added in a statement in Abuja, that it would be foolhardy for anyone to think that the APC would be an alternative to the PDP.

"This fact is further reinforced by the fact that even its (APC) leadership parades politically expired, analogue and yesterday men, including the likes of Akande, Ikimi, Bello Masari, Buhari, Ogbeh, Bashir Tofa and their likes, who do not promise any hope for today's Nigeria and therefore cannot bring any meaningful change to the polity," the Presidency added.

Insisting that the membership of the APC was not progressive, it claimed that the ideology of the party was not also impressive.

It said the only common thing that bound them was the desire to seize power from the PDP.

The Presidency claimed that President Goodluck Jonathan was being persecuted because he was from a minority tribe.

"The membership and composition of the APC is nothing progressive. They are ideologically ill defined and seem to have come together for only one purpose which is to grab power from the PDP and united on one sentiment which is their peculiar hatred for the person of President Jonathan. Is there an offence in being a President from a minority tribe?," it stated.

The Presidency said that those who joined the APC did so because of their hatred for the President, which it said started since he won the election in 2011.

The Presidency said, "Those who cooperate with them from the North are not true mainstream northern politicians but rather anarchists and irredentists who pursue political power based purely on ethnic sentiments.

"From the first day of the Jonathan Presidency, these people have tried all methods to suffocate his administration and make it impossible for him to govern. Immediately the President was inaugurated, he was made to contend with a major post-election violence unprecedented in the annals of our political history.

"This paved the way for the escalation of the Boko Haram insurgency to the level that was totally and absolutely unimaginable; reducing previous episodes like the Maitatsine riots and similar previous sectarian violence in the North to a child's play.

"It is to the glory of God, tenacity of purpose and ingenious administrative capacity of President Jonathan that in spite of these overwhelming and daunting security crisis, his administration still records a most distinguished performance in terms of delivering dividends of democracy ever recorded in the annals of the history of Nigeria.

"Isn't it surprising too that since their coming together, Nigerians have yet to know what the APC stands for in terms of definite agenda? What do they have that is better than the PDP?

"They have no official manifestoes; rather what we hear from one leader is a sharp contradiction from what we hear from another."

For example, it said Buhari, who is the leading figure of the APC in the North, delivered a lecture in London in which he alleged that he spoke against restructuring of the Nigerian federation, resource control, sovereign national conference and other core demands of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria.

The Presidency added that Tinubu went to a similar event more recently and listed out APC's proposed programmes on power, agriculture, and rail transportation which were not in any way different from the contents of the Transformation Agenda of the PDP.

It said in spite of the long years of existence of the three political parties(ACN, Congress for Progressive Change and All Nigeria Peoples Party) that merged into the APC,they were unable to find credible personalities among their followers for national positions and offices.

"The ACN particularly is reputed to always outsource its presidential candidate to the PDP. It is not surprising therefore that in the new party's national executive, six of its 11 members, which is about 60 per cent are former chieftains of the PDP," it added.

Because of this, the Presidency said Nigerians would want to know whether the APC was different from the PDP or that it should be regarded "as PDP 2."

Faulting the description of the APC as consisting of old and expired leaders, the Interim spokesman for the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, wondered if those leading the PDP could be categorised as young men when all of them were in their 70s and 80s.

He added that Nigerians would determine the fate of APC and the PDP in 2015.

The APC interim spokesman added, "What Okupe is saying is that the National Chairman of the PDP is a young man.

"He is saying that the chairman of its Board of Trustees is also a young man. This is a party whose national youth leader is about 70 years. Nigerians are not fools. At the appropriate time, they would decide what they want."

Meanwhile, political leaders, including governors in the North-West, are divided over whether to join the APC or not.

Our correspondent gathered that the leaders and their followers were not happy with Jonathan and were therefore determined to ensure his ouster in 2015.

For example, some northern governors, especially those in the North-West, have been meeting political leaders and former rulers, complaining about Jonathan's style of leadership and the running of the PDP.

The governors are Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko(Sokoto), Babangida Aliyu (Niger) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa).

They also complained about the crisis in Rivers State, which they were said to have alleged was caused by the Presidency.

It was gathered that while Nyako had been fraternising with the defunct ANPP before it became a part of the APC, Lamido, on the other hand, had been lambasting the promoters of the new party.

A source close to two other governors said; "for now, the best thing to do is to engage in wider consultations rather than just jumping into a new party; there are many ways to kill a rat; if the PDP believes that without some governors it could go it alone, then, when election comes, we shall see.

"That has been the position of the rest governors but it is only the Adamawa State governor, who is insisting that his colleagues of like-minds should dump the PDP before 2015."

But the Chief Press Secretary to Nyako, Ahmed Sajoh, said his boss was not leaving the PDP.

He said, "The governor has made it clear that he is not leaving PDP, but the matter in Adamawa is beyond comprehension whereby the national chairman of the PDP decides what goes on in the party in the state without an iota of concession to the governor."
