A female member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, was yesterday, crushed by a train in the Ikeja axis of Lagos State.

Efforts by some eyewitnesses to call her attention to the oncoming train proved abortive as she was seemingly neck-deep in her phone.

She was reportedly rushed to a hospital but unfortunately, she gave up the ghost.

An eyewitness who spoke under the condition of anonymity said: “The train was not moving at a high speed. People tried to call her attention to the oncoming train but she didn’t yield to the call as she continued pressing her mobile phone. 

“I was looking at her from where I stood and saw her with an earpiece plugged into her ears which made her unable to hear the sound of the oncoming train.

"Many passers-by tried to pull her out of the rail line but she ran towards the moving train which crushed parts of her body.”

This is not the first time such incident will be recorded. Some time ago, a girl got crushed to death while she was posing at the railway with her boyfriend who luckily survived the crash and was hospitalized.

Meanwhile, experts have warned that taking selfies could cause one epileptic fits.

A dog is currently cooling off in custody after it mauled an 8-day-old baby girl to death.

The Lee County Animal Control has detained a family dog after it committed the act in its Virginia home.

No charges have been filed so far against the killer-dog and the child’s name has not been released.

Sheriff Gary Parsons of Lee County said that the dog which appeared to be a mixed breed would likely be killed at some point but that it is currently in their custody.

“More than likely the animal will be destroyed at some point but right now the animal is just in custody,” Parsons said.

The baby had extensive injuries to the upper part of her body and died at a Knoxville medical centre.

She was initially taken to Lonesome Pine Hospital, then Holston Valley Medical Center and then to UT Medical Center in Knoxville where she eventually died.

- Have you had to deal with wearing an extra hair especially under the scorching sun and still manage to feel cool so the world will be at peace with you? If you ever decide to have a haircut as a woman, be sure to get the side talks and then outright questions on whether you are bereaved or perhaps struck with the much-dreaded cancer which demands a total chop off of the hair for chemotherapy.

- How about the struggle to keep the face woke with make-up? Nobody understands that except the women who wear the shoes, like they say, only them know where it pinches.

The way women apply mascara with an open mouth and smear it all over their eyes at the slightest attempt to shut it up deserves a place in the history of arts.

Senator Shehu Sani, who represents Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, has revealed how much lawmakers receive every month.

The lawmaker disclosed that Nigerian lawmakers including him receive N13.5 million monthly as “running cost” in addition to a N700,000 monthly consolidated salary and allowances.

This was contained in a recent interview published on Wednesday.

“I think what we can say is that the running cost of a senator is N13.5 million every month,” the senator said.

According to him, although there is no specification on what the funds was meant for, each lawmaker is mandated to provide receipts to back up their expenses.

He explained: “But what I am saying is that that money (N13.5 million per month) must be receipted for what you do with it. But what you are given to go and spend without any accountability is N750,000.”

The lawmaker also spoke on the controversial constituency projects for federal lawmakers.

“The constituency project itself is given on a zonal basis and almost every senator will go with a constituency fund of about N200 million, but it is not the cash that is given to you.

“You will be told that you have N200 million with an agency of government for which you will now submit projects equivalent to that amount. And it is that agency of government that will go and do those projects for you.”

A 43-year-old married man, Yusuf Adamu, has been arrested for sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy after giving him N100.

Adamu who hails from Zango, Birninkudu, the headquarters of Birninkudu Local Government of Jigawa state, is an official of Birninkudu Magistrates’ Court.

While parading the suspect yesterday, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commandant of Dutse command, Muhammed Durmin Iya, warned parents and guardians to keep an eye on their wards.

He said the suspect who is a father of nine, was arrested on the premises of Birninkudu Magistrates’ Court

A Nigerian man identified as Tony Iwobi, has been elected the first black senator in the history of Italy.

The emergence of the Nigerian, who belongs to the Anti-Immigration League, was announced on Tuesday.

Iwobi, of Spirano in Lombardy, announced “with great emotion” on his Facebook page that he had been elected to the Senate in Italy’s general elections.

He wrote: “After more than 25 years of fighting as part of the League’s big family, I’m about to start another great adventure. I’m ready, friends."

Iwobi who was born in Nigeria went to Italy on a student visa some 40 years ago and finally settled in the country where he also established an IT firm.

Before running for the Senate, he represented the League as a municipal councillor in Spirano back in the 1990s, and more recently headed Salvini’s national committee on immigration.

A 50-year-old commercial driver, Jude Ugwu, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly inserting an unidentified substance inside the private part of his neighbour’s daughter.

According to the prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, the accused called the five-year -old girl into his room when she was preparing for school in the morning and inserted the yellow substance inside her vagina.

Ogu said: “The accused, thereafter, inserted a yellow substance that looks like a charm into the private part of the girl and told her not to remove it.

“The girl could not walk properly as a result of the substance and needed to tell her mother.”

Ogu also said before the accused was arrested, he had earlier denied the act when confronted by the complainant, Mrs. Akume Airuviere.

The offences, he said, violated Sections 187 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Granting bail of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum to the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Taiwo Akinni adjourned the case until April 16th for mention.

In a male dominated field, it is often difficult to see women compete in the space and happily do that, but Stella Adele is an exception to that rule.

Adele is a 2:1 graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, who drives commercial tricycle known as keke marwa in the local parlance in a bid to make ends meet.

According to her, she used to have a job but it didn't really give her enough time to take care of her family, so she opted for a job that will give her a flexible time.



Adele delved into the tricycle business upon the advice of a police friend who told her how lucrative the business is.

With the support of her brother and a loan from the bank, she was able to start her own 'keke' business and she does it proudly with every bit of happiness.

She said she makes an average of N8,000 to N12, 000 everyday and nothing less than N7, 000 on days she resumes late due to some other engagements.

Adele plans to buy a bus in the nearest future with proceeds from her business.

Some of Adele's colleagues commended her, stating that she is very hardworking and willing to succeed despite the nature of the business.

A 23-year-old woman who was born with three vaginas has spoken up on why people should accept her for who she is.

Briana Fletcher, was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which causes the reproductive system to be underdeveloped.

This means she’s missing significant portions of her vagina – Briana has no uterus and is missing the upper two thirds of her vaginal canal.

There were no external clues of what was going on inside Briana’s vagina, so she didn’t learn of her condition until puberty, when her period didn’t arrive.

She said: "That was the first clue. "The doctor attributed it to my low weight.



"I didn’t really feel any different. It was a bit off when someone would ask me for a tampon or pad at school but I just said I didn’t have any on me. It didn’t really bother me."

Rape is one of the major challenges of the society which shouldn’t be treated with the kid’s gloves any longer because it seems to be getting out of hand.

Hardly will you flip through the pages of the National Dailies without coming across one disturbing case of rape or the other.

Rape is a form of sexual assault where a man or woman gains carnal knowledge of another without his/her consent.

Between seven to 10 cases of rape are reported on a weekly basis in Nigeria and it doesn’t sound pleasant.

Sex is supposed to be an intimate activity between two consenting adults, anything short of that is a clear case of rape no matter how it is twisted.

Just recently, an 11-month-old baby was raped by a man old enough to be her father and she bled profusely while undergoing excruciating pains.

What has really gotten over people in recent times? Are we now in the animal kingdom?

Some people blame women for dressing in seductive manner which must have lured a man into gaining a carnal knowledge of them.

For the love of God, we live in a free society and everyone is entitled to wear whatever they feel comfortable in, but that doesn’t overrule the fact that decency should be a watchword.

Anyone who does not have control over his emotions is not qualified to be called a human being. This is because, the ability to know when to act and when not to, distinguishes humans from animals.

It is only in the animal kingdom that they lose grip of their self-control and act instinctively, but they were obviously wired that way.

You may not understand the nature of trauma rape victims go through until you get closer to them.

There have been quite a number of cases where victims bled to death, yet some others left with serious injuries.

Female rape victims sometimes, end up with unwanted pregnancy and some lose their lives in the process of trying to get rid of the foetus.

Never should there be any justification for rape, and anyone who commits the offence deserves to be put through serious punishment.

In the few cases convicted rapists are fined or sentenced to prison for a few months after which they walk away free.

This perhaps is one of the reasons why the menace has continued to gain ground in the country.

Some youths who are worried by the spate of rape in recent times have taken to various social media platforms to suggest a capital punishment for rapists.

How about that? Will it not make sense?

The federal government should consider imposing the death penalty on convicted rapists.

Death penalty exists in Nigeria for crimes such as murder, but it is rarely implemented, but if it is taken seriously with a few actions, it will serve as a serious deterrent and the rate of rape will definitely decrease.
