People Magazine reports that researchers say that a baby girl, who was born at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong in 2010, was pregnant with twin fetuses.

It was originally believed that the baby had two tumors in her abdomen, but it turned out they were fetuses instead.

The Hong Kong Medical Journal report stated that “the fetuses were developed enough that they each had a spine, intestines, bones with bone marrow, “primitive” brain matter, an anus, a rib cage and an umbilical cord.”

Fewer than 200 cases of this rare condition called Fetus-in-fetu have been documented to date. I’m even surprised at the number. It’s way too many.

Dr. Yu Kai-man, a medical professional said “since it is impossible for the little girl to have conceived the pregnancy on her own, the fertilization of the twin fetuses, of course, belongs to her parents, which has gone to the wrong place.”

At just three weeks old, the baby eventually underwent surgery to remove the fetuses, and researchers revealed that they had gestated up to 10 weeks.
