Professors, professionals and practitioners of communication in Nigeria presented new communication curricula to National Universities Commission (NUC). Proponents of the new curricula worked on it for over two years and have been advocating for its acceptance and adoption. They include professors and senior lecturers from the departments of mass communication/communication studies of numerous universities spread across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.

Others that were part of the advocacy for acceptance of the new curricula are regulatory agencies such as the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Nigerian Press Council (NPC); professional bodies such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and Radio, Television and Theartre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU); practitioners such as the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), print media journalists and the Director of Public Relations of the Nigerian Navy; and international development agencies such as UNESCO, UNICEF and the MacArthur Foundation.

If you are interested in studying mass communication in Nigeria or you are a graduate of this discipline, seven new courses would be replacing this degree. Here are the seven independent degree-awarding departments which the new curricula seek to establish in place of mass communication:

6. Development Communication Studies

The mother of Nigeria international Samuel Kalu has been released after being kidnapped by gunmen six days ago, according to Nigerian police.

Ozuruonye Juliet Kalu was abducted on 27 February as she travelled home in the south-eastern state of Abia.

It is unclear whether a reported ransom was paid, but authorities confirmed her release around 2300 GMT on Monday.

"It is true that she was released to her family," Godfrey Ogbonna, of Abia State police, told BBC Sport.

"I can also confirm that investigations are ongoing to arrest those responsible.
"We will make a public statement as soon as more details emerge but for now, she is safe and reunited with her family at home."

Despite the kidnapping, Kalu has been included in Bordeaux's squad for their rescheduled French Ligue 1 fixture against Montpellier on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old, who was named in Nigeria's squad on Monday for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Seychelles and a friendly versus Egypt, has scored once in five appearances for the Super Eagles since his debut last year.

Kidnappings - more often of oil workers, the rich and famous - had been on the increase in Nigeria, but footballers and their families are increasingly being targeted.

Current Nigeria captain John Mikel Obi's father was kidnapped for the second time in seven years in June 2018, before being released after a ransom of 10 million naira (about $27,500) was paid.

In 2008, the brother of former Everton defender
Joseph Yobo was kidnapped before being released two weeks later.

Kalu joined Bordeaux from Belgian club KAA Gent in August 2018.

There was a mild drama on Thursday in Unilag, as a Diploma student flipped her lecture the bird during a heated argument.

According to the students who witnessed the drama, the girl had gone to the lecturer to accuse her of aiding exam malpractices.

The lecturer was said to have replied by saying it’s the girl’s mother that does such. However, while the student was walking away, she gave the lecturer a “fc*k you” sign.

Ali Nuhu, the popular Northern actor has revealed that he met his wife on set as he talked about his big break into the English movie industry from Kannywood. 

In an interview with Daily Trust, Ali Nuhu disclosed that he met his wife, Maimuna, on the set of the now-classic Hausa movie, ‘Wasila’. He said; 

“I was working on set, in the year 2000 when I saw her walk into the house we were shooting in, and I jokingly said to my colleagues Ishaq Sidi Ishaq and Hajara Usman, that I have seen my wife-to-be. One thing led to another, and we got talking. We had an understanding, and two days later I asked the producer of the movie, Yakubu Lere, who is her relative, that I would like to meet her again. He arranged a meeting, and we clicked immediately.”

He further disclosed that his wife has been his major support system in the movie industry.

Benaiah Monday has died on his way to Dubai, where he was expected to undergo a major heart surgery.

His story caught national interest after a video of his distraught dad soliciting for help for him in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, went viral.

About 48 hours after the video hit the internet, Nigerians rallied around to donate over N70m towards his surgery.

However, it was gathered that brave Benaiah lost the battle, this morning in Lagos, while going for the surgery. He was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
