We need to occupy the Internet, social media and demand concrete accountability from the government of the day. Lives are being wasted with impunity and this does not call for any secret approach. Who knows this group and who/what they represent? The government of the day needs to holistically re-think its politico-security strategy. As we speak, production of several companies via the Forcados line has been shut since February, resulting in colossal loss to the nation and companies, States and even communities involved by way of its impact on oil revenue including 13% derivation. It's laudable and commendable to deal with criminals but use of force as a stand alone to resolve the Niger Delta issue is an unviable proposition. Yes, criminals should be isolated and dealt with, but the wider issues and grievances that throw up restiveness and instability in the region, needs to be better appreciated and handled with uncommon statecraft. It doesn't appear that critical stakeholders understand what we are dealing with, at least, and perhaps, not yet. |

The Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti Division, on Wednesday fined the State Security Services, SSS, N5million for illegally arresting and detaining a member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Afolabi Akanni, who represents Efon Constituency 1. Mr. Akanni was whisked away on March 4 by SSS operatives who invaded the House of Assembly complex for alleged breach of security regulations. He was eventually released on March 22. Mr. Akanni was not in court on Wednesday. His counsel, Obafemi Adewale, told the judge, Taiwo Taiwo, his client could not be physically present because he was still receiving “post-traumatic” treatment in a hospital outside the state. Delivering his judgment, the judge, noted that the Respondent, SSS, had all along failed to either deny or defend the position, facts and allegations of the applicant. He said in the eyes of the law, “there is no basis for the court to believe that all that the applicant had alleged against the DSS were not true.” According to him, Mr. Akanni’s fundamental rights as a citizen of Nigeria, as specified by the principles of the Rule of Law and the African Charter on the Rights of individuals, had been violated by the SSS in illegally arresting and continually detaining him for 18 days. The court also granted three out of the four reliefs sought by the applicant’s counsel, which are, “whether the applicant’s unlawful arrest and detention is justified , whether the said intimidation, torture and continued detention is not a violation of his fundamental human rights and a violation of the Rule of Law, and whether the applicant’s is not entitled to damages”. Mr. Adewale, after the court session, described the judgment as a courageous demonstration of the willingness and readiness of the judiciary to protect the sanctity of the constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights of the citizens of this country. “This is not about Afolabi Akanni, it is not about the Ekiti State House of Assembly, and it is not about Governor Fayose. It is about the ordinary man on the streets who has this right but who is now facing an apparent trend all over the federation of a gradual return to the days of impunity when security agencies trudge relentlessly on the rights of the citizens of this country under various guises,” he said. “The people working in security have their limits as specified by the laws that created them but most of them operate as if they are above the law. “What the court has done today is to again re-emphasize that we have a constitution in Nigeria which is supreme to every other organs of government and which guides every of our conduct including the President of the country. “It is not even about the N5 million awarded for damages and the court has stated that when you do what the DSS has done to Akanni, the fine must be paid. Within the parameters of the law, we will ensure that the money is paid by the Respondent.” Also, the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Kola Oluwawole, said the judgment has vindicated the House’s position that the SSS’ invasion, arrest and detention of its members were illegal and against the democratic principles of the country. ” The judgment is a vindication of our position that the DSS’ invasion of the state House on March 4 was an aberration,” Mr. Oluwawole said. “We cried to the world over this. The chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Information, Strategy and Security has told President Muhammadu Buhari to put measures in place to check criminal activities of Fulani herdsmen. The lawmaker, Tunde Braimoh, made the call on Wednesday in Lagos in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Mr. Braimoh (APC-Kosofe II) said taking such a step would boost the integrity of the president and re-affirm the people’s confidence in his administration. “The president needs to be courageous; we know him as a man of integrity, he will not be swayed away by myopic, parochial, religious and inglorious tendencies. “We want him to protect his integrity. Fulani herdsmen have done a lot of havoc in Nigeria. “Fulani herdsmen are aggressive and excessive, they wreak havoc on innocent citizens in various parts of Nigeria. “The president needs to deal with the issue of Fulani herdsmen decisively. They have constituted nuisance across the country,” Mr. Braimoh said. According to him, the Federal Government’s investment on the herdsmen through nomadic education has not yielded the desired results. The lawmaker advised the government to change the system of education for the herdsmen and build ranches for them. He said the government should be able to educate the herdsmen to know their right from wrong. Mr. Braimoh recalled that some herdsmen had once brought their cattle to graze on the highway in some parts of Lagos. He urged the Department of State Security to be diligent and proactive in handling security issues affecting herdsmen. I don't know why the government has not seen that this madness by marauding murderers is perhaps the greatest threat currently to our corporate existence. While acknowledging that these attacks pre-dated this administration, honesty compels me to admit that the attacks have escalated in scope and intensity since last year. These heartless criminals operate with a level of impunity and audacity that beggars explanation. The promoters like has now suggested, should have advised people on what to do. Some who use it unknowingly, will think the peeling and wound is peculiar to them or due to overdose as in too much application whereas the problem is with the oil itself. hentech911, When you mix with glycerin, does it provide full respite/relief from this side effect? And is there an alternative to Glycerin? What if u apply very mildly and dilute in water for example? |

Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Muslim cleric, has described the preaching bill that has been generating controversy in Kaduna state as unconstitutional. Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, had said the bill was an updated version of an existing law required to curtail inflammatory sermons by faith leaders. But in an interview in the April edition of The Interview, Gumi said the bill had gone too far. “If you are trying to fight terrorism and extremism, you don’t clamp on the freedom of speech, freedom of thought and freedom of propagation of thoughts. These liberties are enshrined in the constitution,” he said. However, he said that the bill could drive extremism underground. The cleric also described Boko Haram as “100% a Muslim problem”, accusing some people in the north of “cooperating with and working to protect them.” “Boko Haram as it now is cannot prosper in Ibadan, because the locals will expose them. The same in Enugu. The people agitating for Biafra cannot prosper in the north because they will be exposed. “We have to understand that these people are from amongst us and that the society is not doing enough to bring these elements out. The House of Representatives has settled for Peugeot 508 as official vehicles for the 360 members at a total cost of N3.6 billion, Daily Trust gathered yesterday. Each vehicle costs N10 million and delivery will be made in two to three months. Daily Trust had on Sunday exclusively reported that the Senate had started taking delivery of 108 Toyota Land Cruiser Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) it ordered for members at the cost of N3.8 billion. Thirty six of the vehicles, which cost N35.1 million each, were delivered last Tuesday and distributed to senators the following day. However, checks by our reporter indicated that a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV V6 2016 model is sold at N17 million. Daily Trust gathered last night that the House had already given Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) a letter of intent to supply the cars. The committee on House services, which is saddled with the responsibility of processing the purchase of the vehicles, met yesterday and took the final decision on the vehicles, it was learnt. The cars are ostensibly intended for committee work. There are 96 standing committees in the House, but the cars would be shared in such a manner that each member would get one. Initially the House had wanted to buy Camry 2016 model, but the members changed their minds to avoid clash of interest because the sole major distributors of Camry in Nigeria, Vatswani Brothers, were under an investigation by the House. The source said the National Assembly tenders’ board would meet this week on the matter and the cars might be supplied within the next few months. The spokesman of the House Rep Abdulrazak Namdas (APC, Adamawa) confirmed to Daily Trust that it was true that the House had settled on Peugeot 508 at the cost of N10 million each. He said they decided to settle for a Nigerian company in order to boost the company’s revenue base, adding that the vehicles would be supplied between the next two and three months. Namdas insisted that the vehicles would be for committee activities and not for the personal use of the lawmakers. WITH the lingering petrol scarcity and its attendant effects on Nigerians, the Federal Government should, as a matter of urgency, find ways of cushioning the untold hardship brought upon Nigerians. The government of the day has introduced several policies that can encourage local production of consumables, such as ban on importation of essential commodities, but this happens to be one of the policies that have been rubbished by scarcity of fuel in the last couple of months. Visits to major markets in Lagos and Ibadan, revealed low patronage, meaning that the purchasing power of many Nigerians had dropped, especially in the face of backlog of unpaid salaries. It is no longer news that many states in the federation have been unable to meet their monthly obligation of paying workers’ salaries as at when due. The situation in Agege market, in Lagos, was the same as that of Bodija, in Ibadan, when the Nigerian Tribune visited the markets at the weekend. In fact, major warehouses which were usually dotted by long queues were devoid of such, as they had exhausted all their stocks of imported brands of commodities, ranging from rice, vegetable oil, tinned foods, among others. As of December 2015, a bag of real long grain rice in the name of Royal Umbrella, Special Caprice, Mama Gold, Mama Africa, Elephant, PJS, Tomato among others, was N10,200, with various short and medium grains going for between N8,000 and N9,000. But as of last weekend, in both cities, the long grain stuff was not available and where available, a bag sold for N15,000. The usual flooding of the markets with both short and medium grains seem to have abated, as a bag now costs N13,000. A jute bag of brown beans (Oloyin) sells for between N24,500 and N25,800, as against N19,800, while drum now goes for N19,200 as against N15,600. Yam flour price that was previously determined by climatic conditions has remained on the high side, as a jute bag goes for N60,000, while the medium bag sells for N45,000. Gari, which always come to the rescue of the cash-strapped, is no longer for the poor as a tin/bowl has risen from N1,500 to N2,500, a 10-kilogramme bag of semovita now sells for N2,700, as against N2,200, wheat price per 10-kilogramme bag has equally gone up with N200, from N2,200 to N2,400. The various brands of imported vegetable oils that were sold for N6,500 last December, now sell for N10,000 for a 25-litre keg. Though they come in different brands, like Kings, Emperor, Moi, Hayart, it will take a discerning consumer to get the sealed keg and not the refill from neighbouring Cotonou for almost the same price. A 10-kilogramme pack of frozen turkey or chicken obtainable for just N6,500/N7,000 four months ago is sold between N8,000 and N9,000. Commodities like tinned tomato puree, sweet corn, Farrows green beans, hot dog, mayonnaise, hot dog, red kidney bean among others are almost double their original prices. Giant size of the various brands of tomato puree (St Rita, Gino, De Rica, De Gold, Pomo etc), which sells for N900 before, now costs between N1,200 and N1,500, depending on the city of purchase. Sweet Corn, whether Green Giant or Napa, which sold for N150, now costs between N180 and N220; Red Kidney bean now sells for N250, as against N160; Hot Dog (sausage) was originally N200, but now N275, while big bottle Bama Mayonnaise salad cream has gone as high as N1,300, against N900. The saying that butter is not for the monkey is applicable to what is currently going on, as the confectionary industry is not comfortable with the prices of its raw materials, as the common margarine is getting out of hand. A 50- kilogramme bag of wheat flour irrespective of its maker sells for N9,300, as against N6,500, 50-kilogramme bag of sugar was 7,000 before now. It now costs N9,400. A-10 kilogramme bucket of Topper margarine, which sold for N5,800, now sells for N7,500, while the least in this family sells for N4,500. Common yeast that sold for N350 for a pack is now N600, with flavouring a roll (12 bottles) selling for N1,500, as against N1,000. Family special staple, noodles for both young and old sells for N1,500 against N1,250. If the sky-hitting prices were occasioned by the policy on importation of consumables, how do we explain a big basket of tomato which shelf life is only a few days now selling for as much as N20,000? A medium bag of Tatashe (long pepper) that usually sells for N5,000 is now N12,000 with a three-litre bucket of Rodo going for between N700 and N1,300, which was before now sold for N500. He asked By CHIOMA IGBOKWE THE Police in Lagos have begun investigation into an alleged case of rape against the Medical Director of a fertility clinic, Sayemi Naturescience Centre. The suspect (names withheld) was alleged to have had carnal knowledge of one of his patients on Saturday April 9, 2016 at one of his centers in Ikeja area of Lagos State. His accuser, one Mrs Funke (other names withheld) made the allegation in her statement at the police station few days after the encounter, hoping that she would get justice. She alleged that the Doctor used a medical instrument called transducer which is usually inserted inside thevagina and moved around slightly while ultrasound images are shown on screen. According to her, she was convinced that the method would allow the doctor have a good view of her womb to ascertain if anything was wrong. The instrument which has the shape of the penis, she alleged , was inserted into her vagina but she never knew when the doctor withdrew the instrument and inserted his own penis inside her untill he was about to ejaculate. Although this might sound like a fairy tale, the victim insisted she never consented to the act. Battling to control her tears, Mrs. Funke said that it was her quest to conceive that landed her in trouble. In her words, “I have a 24 year old son and ever since, all efforts to get pregnant had failed. I have visited different hospitals and prayed endlessly for God to remember me. Luckily, I have an understanding husband who stood by me all these years. “I knew that I had to do anything possible to ensure that there are children in the house. This was how I picked interest in any programme that talks about fertility. Early in the month, I watched a health programme organized by the Doctor who is the founder of Sayemi Naturalscience Centre, Ikeja. “During the programme, he explained that he had a natural way through which he could heal infertility. I was impressed and I decided to visit his clinic when he explained that my problem could be solved through dieting. “Last Saturday, with the consent of my husband, I decided to pay him a visit. I bought their clinic card for N2000 and waited for my turn. When I finally saw the doctor, I narrated my medical history and all the efforts that I had made to conceive. He assured me that his clinic would be my last bus stop but he would need to access my body through vaginal scan. “I knew what vaginal scan meant. Immediately, I stretched my body on the table for examination. Normally, you were expected to lie down and spread your legs widely apart. I trusted the doctor, so I never queried his method. “He applied cream on my vagina and inserted the instrument used by doctors for normal vaginal scan. The only odd thing he did was to touch my clitoris and I tried to resist and he told me to calm down that this was a perfect process of inducing my hormones so that he could access my body well. “At that point, I relaxed very well, closed my eyes and spread my legs because my focus was to get solution. “At a point, he removed the equipment and inserted it again but this time, it was much bigger. I believed that it was as a result of him handling with my clitoris that made me to get carried away to the point that I could not tell that the stuff that was bigger inside me was actually his penis. “It was the noise he made when he was about to ejaculate that drew my attention and I opened my eyes and lo and behold, he was actually having sex with me instead of the scan.” Shocked, Mrs. Funke claimed that she quickly wore her pants and asked the doctor why he took advantage of her. “I was shocked as well as embarrassed. I was terrified because I could not understand if this was the process. He quickly removed the condom and threw into the waste basket and started begging me to forgive him and allow him to proceed with the treatment. I left his office and complained to the nurse who was on duty and she said that it is not a new thing that the man is used to sleeping with most of his patients. She asked me to forgive him that she would find a way to get the hospital compensate me so that the matter would be closed”. When asked why she did not scream or attack the doctor when she discovered what happened, Mrs. Funke said that her main concern was to get out of the place safe. “When I discovered what he did, I was terrified because I could not understand why he did that to me. I have heard of how people mysteriously die and my main concern was to leave his office alive, that was why I complained bitterly to the nurse. When I got home, I told my husband what I went through and he asked me to formally report to the police. Heaven knows that I did not consent to the act. I only had faith in the doctor that he knew what he was doing”, she claimed. She begged the police to assist her to get justice. “I am legally married and I am blessed with a great husband. That was why I confided in him. The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), worldwide has demanded the immediate release of Mrs. Gesila Khan, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Cross River State who was invited and then arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, 13 April, 2016 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. According to IYC, in a statement signed by Eric Omare, the group’s spokesman “Mrs. Khan, had gone to the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to honour an invitation and having met with the EFCC team, they demanded for a first class traditional ruler or holder of the national honour of Commander of the Niger (CON) to stand surety to bail her. However, when the surety was made available on Thursday, the 14th of April, 2016, the EFCC at Port Harcourt claimed that they no longer know her whereabout.” The IYC condemned what it called “this illegal conduct and flagrant abuse of power by the EFCC in the guise of fighting corruption. While all well-meaning Nigerians and organizations, including the IYC have over the years supported efforts at stamping out corruption from Nigeria, we insist that such a fight must be done within the ambit of the law and not to witch hunt perceived enemies of the government in power. If the EFCC and other security agencies have any case against Mrs. Khan, she should be taken to a competent court of law and not subject to continuous harassment and intimidation as they have been doing to her since July 14, 2015. “The arrest, continuous harassment, detention and taking of Mrs. Khan to an unknown destination by Buhari’s security agents is a deliberate effort to punish her because the ruling party lost the 2015 general elections in Rivers State. Mrs. Khan served as Resident Electoral Commissioner for Rivers State during the 2015 general elections. According to IYC,”Nigerians would recall the illegal arrest and molestation of Mrs. Khan by the Directorate of State Security (DSS) under Mr. Daura in order to discredit the general elections in 2015 Rivers State at the tribunal in August 2015. “This effort by the EFCC is a continuation of the humiliation and psychological torture of Mrs. Khan. The IYC finds the vindictive nature of the Buhari administration totally unacceptable. This attitude poses serious danger to our democracy and the rule of law. A taxi driver in his 50s reportedly slumped and died during sex with a middle aged-woman at Lanjorin section of Muritala area, Ilorin on Tuesday night. The deceased reportedly died, few hours after he had told his wife he was attending a three-day prayer vigil. The incident, it was gathered occurred around 11pm. The deceased was said to have been rushed by the woman’s neighbours to a private clinic in the area after he slumped and the woman began to scream for help but he was rejected at the clinic. Some bystanders had earlier attempted to burn the clinic on allegations that the Director refused to treat someone brought in on emergency but later gave up their threat when they realised the dark-complexioned man was already dead. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the just concluded Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area councils election as a shame, saying that the federal government, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives manipulated the elections in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship candidate, Bitrus Tanko Kura who spoke after the candidate of the APC was declared winner of the election early Thursday morning, said it was sad that the government that wanted to fight corruption could conduct such a shameful election. He said such an election had never occurred in the history of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Tanko said APC chieftains shared money and used security agents to snatch ballot boxes at some polling units. He also said that the Secretary General of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, had no business monitoring the elections. “I keep wondering why the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) could abandon his job and come and monitor election at a local level like ours when he has so many problems on his table to attend to. He alleged that money was shared to voters at various polling units in the open in the presence of security men and nobody was arrested “because they have been given their own share. It is a shame,” he added. He said the voters were intimidated by federal might. “These are people that made the law, they are the same people breaking it,” he said. Muhammed who was also the party agent for the chairmanship election, said the party would meet in due course to determine the next course of action and know if the party would challenge the result. Reacting, the FCT chapter of the APC said no election in the country was without issues. The FCT APC publicity secretary, Usman Adagi, told City News that there could not have been a better organised election than the one held on Saturday and Wednesday. He said INEC performed well while the security agencies were given a free hand to carry out their responsibilities. “If the federal might, INEC, security were to be used, of course there won’t have been a supplementary election. Irrespective of where you stand, please note that people are passing through a very harrowing experience at the moment. It is easy to stay in the diaspora or on the internet and make online comments while people are queuing up for hours and days to get fuel. The nights and even days are hot yet power supply has virtually collapsed. Inflation rate is galloping and fares/fees are going up. There is hunger and misery. That is the stark reality and it is not about blaming anybody or calling names but being pragmatic to admit that we are in a virtual emergency and doing something about it. This is not the time for denials, excuses or election sloganeering. It is time for radical delivery, out of the box thinking and visible governance. 2 Likes |

I hope some people who should be solving problems do not create needless and avoidable problem in this country? The mindless killings by rampaging murderers and criminals across the country deserves urgent focus. Agents of death and the devil have been killing innocent and hapless citizens with impunity and audacity, without appropriate response from relevant authorities. Elections are over and it is time for governance, delivery of campaign promises and accountability.
