It's simple. The need for communication and the ability to communicate is biologically innate. From the dance of the bee to indicate the direction of food, to the croaking of toad to attract a potential mate, to the hissing of a snake on sensing a potential prey, to the singing of the birds to imitate the natural environment and blend in it or attract a potential mate, to the gibberish of apes to indicate various emotional wants and desires as well as express such. None is however as complex and diverse as the human language system. Perhaps it is our psychological dominance over fellow species or an increase in complexity of needs that prevailed on the earliest of our species to develop from basic grunt to more complex grunts to more distinct sounds to earliest forms of known language. It is pertinent to note that there is as there is no such thing as a first man, there is no such thing as first as a first language. There are first men and first languages. However, environmental, geographical and biological factors affect the tone and accent as well as vocalisation of these languages. As man spread, new languages were formed. Some languages died and have stayed that way. Some have mixed with other languages to form new hybrid languages. The evolution of language is one aspect of science that is not entirely certain yet. However, this is the most plausible model yet (I stand to be corrected). Any questions? |

Religion / Cafeteria Christianity: Why Do You Cherrypick The Bible? by Zikdik(m): 12:26pm On Nov 21, 2014 |
Seems to me that Christians conveniently ignore that parts of the Bible they don't like. They say things like "oh, that's not to be taken literally" or "what that REALLY means is". They always water-down or ignore or interpret away the parts of the Bible they wish didn't exist. Every Christian reading this, imagine you are living in pre-Jesus times. That means all the laws in Leviticus are in full effect and no one has died for your sins yet. You must, according to the Old Testament: -stone a woman to death for having premarital sex (Leviticus 20:9) -stone a man to death for having gay sex (Leviticus 20:13) Translation: "You had sex in a manner that I don't approve of. Therefore you must die. And by the way, you will be killed in a painful, brutal, sadistic manner. You will suffer greatly for the crime of giving yourself and someone else pleasure." Really? Is that absolutely necessary? Most modern translations of the Bible replace "stoned to death" with "put to death" but the original text says "stoned to death". Have any of you seen a person get killed that way? It's absolutely horrible. If the person is lucky, they'll catch a large stone to the head shortly after the stoning begins and they'll be knocked out. Sadly, this doesn't happen most of the time and death is slow and brutal. They cover the woman in a white sheet and bury her up to her waist. As the stoning progresses, large red spots begin to appear all over the white sheet where the impacts from the stones have made cuts or wounds, until eventually the person collapses due to shock or blood loss. How insane and cruel is that? And why would God, who supposedly loves us, do something so sadistic and barbaric and cruel to us merely for giving each other pleasure? Seriously, what is the big deal? Why is premarital sexual pleasure SO WRONG and SO EVIL and SO IMMORAL that it warrants a horribly painful death sentence? Don't you think that's a bit extreme and over-the-top? We usually associate that type of punishment with radical, militant, crazy religious nut-cases like the suicide bombers. Is it because of STDs? Or pregnancy? If so, why did God create viruses and STD bacteria in the first place? What good are they? And as for pregnancy, why didn't God just design the human female in such a way that she would get pregnant only if she has sex and also *wants* to get pregnant. God could have made women capable of opening or closing their fallopian tubes at will. No unintended pregnancies...ever! And it would really cut down on over-population and mass starvation. But no... God gives both genders a healthy sex drive and then tells us we're gonna get butchered if we act on it. That's like dangling a glass of lemonade in front of a very thirsty person and saying "Here.. take it and look at it. But if you drink it, I'll stab you to death." I mean... what's the point of doing that? It's insane and just down-right sadistic. So to the Christians in the audience... would you really stone these "sinful" people to death? Hey, God ordered it! You better obey... right? And Jesus hasn't shown up yet to wash away our sins. In pre-Jesus times, the Old Testament was God's law and you had better obey it. So would you really kill two consenting adults for the "crime" of having unapproved sex? |

First of all, I hope you know stealing is a "sin". Do well to credit the author of any intellectual property. 1) I'm tired of telling this to nitwit theists but I'd do it one more time. Atheists are not evolutionists. I, personally, know very little about evolution neither do I care to know more than I already do. Also, stop lying for Jesus. Darwin never recanted the theory. He only apologized for causing Christians excessive butthurt. Have you no respect for the memory of the dead? You also need to go back to high school. Humans didn't evolve directly from monkeys. I hope you do not embarrass yourself about this any further. 2) Science is quite young. The Big Bang is correct about the evolution of the universe certainty about the origins are unclear at this time. However, I'd rather stick with the opinions of the lab coat guys who painstakingly research to acquire, verify and utilize accurate information than a book written by Jewish Cavemen and containing all sorts of absurdities with no substantiation other than a threat of eternal damnation for the use of common sense. 3) This one is truly annoying. I've got a Batman cape. It's proof of the existence of the dark knight. Of course, that shouldn't even be in contention because the existence of Batman is well documented. Silly. 4) In the human female, a fertilized egg can implant into the fallopian tube , cervix or ovary rather than the uterus causing an ectopic pregnancy. The existence of a cavity between the ovary and the fallopian tube could indicate a flawed design in the female reproductive system. Prior to modern surgery, ectopic pregnancy invariably caused the deaths of both mother and baby. Even in modern times, in almost all cases, the pregnancy must be aborted to save the life of the mother. In the human female, the birth canal passes through the pelvis. The prenatal skull will deform to a surprising extent. However, if the baby ’s head is significantly larger than the pelvic opening, the baby cannot be born naturally. Prior to the development of modern surgery ( caesarean section ), such a complication would lead to the death of the mother, the baby or both. Other birthing complications such as breech birth are worsened by this position of the birth canal. In the human male, testes develop initially within the abdomen. Later during gestation, they migrate through the abdominal wall into the scrotum. This causes two weak points in the abdominal wall where hernias can later form. Prior to modern surgical techniques, complications from hernias, including intestinal blockage, gangrene , etc., usually resulted in death. [7] The existence of the pharynx, a passage used for both ingestion and respiration , with the consequent drastic increase in the risk of choking . The breathing reflex is stimulated not directly by the absence of oxygen but rather indirectly by the presence of carbon dioxide. A result is that, at high altitudes, oxygen deprivation can occur in unadapted individuals who do not consciously increase their breathing rate. Oxygenless asphyxiation in a pure-nitrogen atmosphere has been proposed as a humane method of execution that exploits this "oversight". The human appendix is a vestigial organ with no known purpose. [ citation needed ] However, appendicitis, an infection of this useless organ, is a certain death without medical intervention. Absolutely perfect (Credit- Wikipedia). 5) Another lie for Jesus. There is no reliable scientific study affirming the efficacy of any form of prayers. Feel free to prove me wrong. Meanwhile, the One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge is still open. Prove that you actually possess any extraterrestrial power and strike gold. Your pastor is welcome to try as well. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Religion / What Does Atheism Have To Offer? - A Discourse by Zikdik(m): 5:25pm On Nov 03, 2014 |
Often religious people talk about how much their faith enriches their lives. Sometimes, a religious person will even ask atheists what we can offer that will enrich lives. In the market place of ideas this seems like a fair question. What does atheism have to offer? It should be noted that while this seems like a fair question, it is a little misleading. Atheism isn’t an idea in the market place of ideas in and of itself. Atheism is the lack of belief in the ideas presented by religion in the market place. However, many atheists have formed communities around ideas of skepticism, humanism, science, reason, and logic. These ideas can compete with religious ideas in the market place of ideas. None of the communities of atheism offer certainty. We can’t know with absolute certainty that the sun will rise tomorrow but based on the evidence, it would be a pretty solid bet. While religion does often offer the stability of certainty as a selling point atheism can only offer uncertainty. However, the uncertainty that science and reason offer is almost certainly more certain than the certainty that religion offers. We know what we know and we know what we don’t know. Religion claims to know what they do not actually know. They are often certain of proven wrong answers. Religions often make claims about a life after death and traditionally, these claims feature some form of paradise. Whether such a paradise merely is the promise of a blissful eternity or includes details such as 72 virgins is not really important. The important part is the contrast that atheism cannot offer such a paradise. The evidence suggests that when we die, we are dead . As depressing as that might sound to someone expecting an eternity of bliss, I don’t see it that way. Many atheists like me see our lives as part of a greater tapestry of human history and as long as that tapestry exists, part of each of us lives on. We are part of something larger than ourselves. Another popular and attractive claim of religions is that we as a species have been created for some sort of special purpose and God has a special plan for each of us as individuals. In other words, we are special because we were created special. Most atheists reject this claim on the lack of evidence. However, there is an alternative view that we can offer. That is the view that we were not created special, but that we are becoming special through our ability to reason and learn about the world around us. Being special isn’t some cheap gift from a divine creator, but rather it is something that we are in the process of earning through struggle and because we are smart and clever. Atheism offers the one thing that religion cannot offer, reality. Critical thinking offers the tools needed to protect ourselves from delusions. Atheism offers the potential that can only come through uncertainty. Atheism offers the individual empowerment to add to the tapestry of humanity. By enriching our lives and the lives of those around us, we are enriching the future of humanity. Atheists don’t need to dogmatically follow some ancient book when we have the ability to shape the future of our species. We can learn from the past and apply what we learn to the future, but we don’t live and long for the past when we can offer the future.
