As men of the Edo State Police Command continue to intensify effort to rid the state of cultists and armed robbers who have laid siege on the state capital, a prime suspect and his accomplices yesterday gave a chilling account of how they killed one Abu Iboje in Benin. The suspect, Lazarus Anthony, told newsmen that he was the one who shot the deceased after he and others went on a reprisal attack on a rival member of a secret cult group whose activities sparked public outcry following the killing of over 25 persons in parts of Benin and its environs. Other members of the five-man gang who were alleged to have carried out the attack on April 27, 2015, are Greatman Ita, Sylvester Ikhifa, Obiaosa Noble and Okeh Godstime. They were arrested on Thursday after months of manhunt by the police who also recovered cult-related items including black caps belonging to the Neo Black Movement, five live cartridges, ritzla and other incriminating exhibits during a raid on them in the state. The suspects were said to have swooped on the deceased, a welder, at his workshop at Eke Street in Benin City. Narrating his involvement in cult activities, the 21-year-old prime suspect, an indigene of Emu in Esan town of Edo State, said, “I am a cultist and the name of my group is . The incident happened when Abu and his squad killed Kelvin at Mikky Yaga house at Upper Sakponba. “The next day, we went to kill Abu and we shot him in the afternoon. We used a short gun to kill him. Edoba who stays at Ikki brought the idea that we should go and kill him. It was me who fired the shot. It was only that one that I have ever participated in. I was confused after the killing; I didn’t know what came over me.” The suspect who said he joined the group last year begged the federal government to forgive him as he was ready to renounce the membership of secret cult. “The federal government should forgive me and I want to renounce from the cult. I joined the cult last year, 2014, and I am a fashion designer. I am still learning,” he said. He added further that one of the suspects, Greatman Ita, an indigene of Akwa Ibom drove them on the fateful day the victim was murdered, an allegation the suspect quickly denied. The suspect added that “we are many. I have not mentioned others; Edoba, Unity and Charity. Greatman Ita was the driver who drove there(scene of the attack). But when asked Greatman Ita said he was never a member of any cultgroup nor the said gang, pointing out that he was in front of his shopwhere he sells DVD items when policemen came and arrested him. The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Stephen Onwochei, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) who paraded thesuspects before newsmen at the command headquarters, said they would be arraigned in court to face charges. Onwochei who disclosed that the operatives of the command had been on the trail of the suspects vowed that the outfit would not rest in its promise to rid the state of criminal elements, especially, cult related kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminal elements and their sponsors. He noted that between April and May this year there was a rise in theactivities of cultists, murder, kidnappers, and armed robbery in parts of Edo state which led to the arrest and arraignment of 227 cult members, adding that the command did sound a note of warning that it would not relent until these crimes are nipped in the bud. It is always celebration time at the headquarters of the World Evangelism Bible Ministries at Ogudu in Lagos where Prophet Samson Ayorinde and his wife, Mercy call the shot. Week in, week out, the church which holds three services every Sunday attended by tens of thousands of worshippers who are often in a mood of merriment, recounting how providence has made positive intervention in their affairs. Time and again, the pastorate is satisfied to coordinate how the persons who come forward to testify to the goodness of God and then pray that their testimony shall remain permanent. But it was a different scenario last Sunday as every other testimony paled in colour, drama and significance to the proof-God-at-work provided by no less a person than Mercy Bantale Ayorinde, wife of the founder of the church. Shouts of ‘Halleluyah’! and ‘Praise the Lord’ rent the air. Mercy could hardly be allowed to share evidence of God’s goodness in her life. Intermittently, she was interrupted by members of the congregation who raised a cheerful chorus that everyone joined in. The drumming and dance would last a couple of minutes before Prophet Ayorinde would shout, ‘Praise the Lord’, ‘Praise the Lord’ to force an end to that particular chorus, allowing his wife to continue telling her tale again. The story is that Mercy ‘died’ while having her meal. Pandemonium was let loose in the Ayorinde household. A doctor was called and he pronounced the woman dead. The Prophet who is known to win back very bad cases when he intercedes in prayers, prayed for over two hours until his voice went hoarse and he could hardly be heard. Some of his lieutenants led by his famous interpreter, Baba Ezekiel Amusan lost hope and advised that the body be prepared for the mortuary, but Ayorinde would have none of that, he politely asked the doctor and his assistants to keep watch from a distance. From late morning till early hours of the night, he continued to pray, yet there was no sign of life from the woman who lay stiff on the bed. From the most unexpected came a word of wisdom that brought a glimmer of hope that was fanned a flame of life. Ayorinde’s mother who had been crying and lamenting, told his son-the Prophet-to shout his wife’s Yoruba name into her ear. The name, Bantale (Yoruba for ‘Stay –with me- till the end) is a prophetic reminder of the eternal bond between Ayorinde and his wife. This appeared to work the magic, as he shouted the name ‘Bantale o’!!. Like it is often seen in the movies and which validates the saying that truth is stranger than fiction, the woman who had been certified by a doctor for over 14 hours sneezed and came back to life! www.thisdaylive.com/articles/how-prophet-ayorinde-s-wife-mercy-died-came-back-to-life/211897/ |
The use of camouflage uniforms by various security agencies other than the Armed Forces namely the Army, Navy and the Air Force has been banned. The Nigerian Police will however use the uniform when in Joint Operation with the military or on special operation such as specific anti-riot missions, a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, said Friday. Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said the te new rule followed the directive of the National Security Council approving the recommendations of a committee on measures to streamline the use of camouflage uniforms. This, he said, was in view of the security implications and concerns raised on the clamour, duplicity and proliferation of camouflage uniforms in the country. “The use of camouflage/fatigue is therefore restricted to the military and for occasional use by the police henceforth,” the statement said. Mr. Olukolade added, “The directive also stipulates that the military is to adopt only two types of camouflage for the three arms of the Armed Forces. “All para-military agencies using various camouflage/fatigues uniforms have up to January 2016 to withdraw such materials currently in their inventory. “With this development, the Ministry of Justice along with law enforcement agencies have been tasked to ensure that extant laws guiding the use of uniforms in Nigeria are strictly enforced. “In the same vein, the Office of the National Security Adviser has been vested with the authority to vet and clear any production and supply of camouflage uniforms in Nigeria. “The proliferation and imitation by criminals and impostors using uniforms especially the camouflage have been generating some concern in national security circles. “The development has been communicated to all the agencies by the Office of the National Security Adviser.” www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/184908-breaking-nigerian-govt-bans-police-other-para-military-agencies-from-use-of-camouflage-uniforms.html |
