WhatsApp Launches New 'Status' Feature for Sharing Videos and Photos That Expire After 24 Hours


The company has re-invented the status tool – which until now has only offered the option to put a piece of text next to your name, like “at the gym” – so that it takes one of Snapchat’s most central and celebrated features. And it is just the latest Facebook company to do so – with everything from Instagram to Facebook’s own app taking its competitors innovations.

People will now be able to share photos and videos as “statuses”, in a similar way to how stories work on Snapchat and now Instagram. Rather than simply posting text, they will be able to add pictures that will show for all their friends – until they are automatically deleted.

Jam Koum, WhatsApp’s founder and boss, said that it had been working to improve the status feature ever since it was first introduced in 2009. The app was actually created as a way of posting these statuses – so that you could let all your friends and contacts know what you’re up to – and has had them ever since, despite company looking to improve them.

“We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature,” Mr Koum wrote. “Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.

“Just like eight years ago when we first started WhatsApp, this new and improved status feature will let you keep your friends who use WhatsApp easily updated in a fun and simple way. From all of us at WhatsApp, we hope you enjoy it!”

In use, the feature looks almost identical to the Instagram feature. But unlike the same tool for Instagram, only friends and contacts will be able to see whatever is posted using it.

In order to prevent Nigerian culture from been eroded, Lagos State Government yesterday directed schools in Education District 1 to conduct their Thursday Assembly sessions in Yoruba language, a mother language for the state, just as it launched a teacher’s guide for the exercise.

Meantime, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, and Lagos State Government also asked teachers and parents to desist from discouraging students who speak their local languages within school premises.

UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, and Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Dr. Oluyinka Ayandele, made the appeal at this year’s International Mother Language Day, IMLD, themed “Towards Sustainable Future through Multilingual Education,” held at Government Senior College, Agege Local Government.

Ayandele, after unveiling the handbook, explained that the Thursday model was tailored after the similar development at the State House of Assembly, where the lawmakers deliberate in Yoruba language on Thursdays. She noted that through the book and the usage of Yoruba on the assembly ground weekly, the culture would be preserved, saying “Our culture is so rich and we all must embrace it.”

The TG/PS stressed that it was a thing of joy for the state to have a rich culture and her tenure would not relent in promoting and ensuring that students embrace it.

“We will no longer ban or scold any students who speak their mother tongue in school premises which will encourage and boost their learning. Research has shown that children can learn over seven languages.

So why are we short-changing the children by stopping them since it is not bad for them to speak their mother language,” she added.

People who want to live longer should avoid having sex, according to Sheffield University experts, explaining why nuns tend to live to old age.

Scientists at the University of Sheffield say refraining from having sex will help you live longer than all of your peers.

And experts believe it could explain why nuns – who stay away from the act completely – tend to live longer.

Researchers discovered that mealworm beetles live for longer if they avoid mating, while those who tried to produce offspring each day passed away at a much younger age.

Mating was found to release a hormone in the insects needed to produce sperm in a male or eggs in a female.

But this was also found to have a negative effect on their immune system, the researchers found.

This makes them vulnerable to potentially deadly infections as their body’s natural ability to fight rogue bacteria is compromised.

Despite the mechanism not being the same in humans, study author Dr Michael Siva-Jothey believes the principle can be applied.
He said: ‘Nuns tend to have a longer lifespan than women with children and most people know of someone with a maiden aunt who seems to live forever.

‘The question is, why? The beetles which mate die sooner than the beetles which don’t mate.’

Humans also have weaker immune systems during sex, which explains how STIs can be easily spread, he added.

Nuns, priests, vicars and monks are known to live longer than others – but not for their religious protection.

It is believed their low rates of high blood pressure – which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke – are responsible.

This comes after research last week revealed that people who eat hot chilli peppers were 13 per cent less likely to die early.

Vermont University scientists found that capsaicin – responsible for the fiery kick – seemed to ward off heart conditions and stroke.

While in August, experts from Massachussetts General Hospital found going vegan could add years to someone’s life.

Eating less protein from animal sources and instead swapping it for cereals, beans and soya substantially reduced death rates, they discovered.

Mortality from heart disease fell 12 per cent, and deaths from all causes were reduced by 10 per cent.

The stage is set for a showdown between the Igbo across Ondo State and the Deji of Akureland, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, over the ban of the title of Eze Ndigbo and replacing it with the title of “Leader”.

Sir Gregory Iloheika who was unanimously elected by the Igbo across the state in 2011 is presently the holder of the Eze Ndigbo title.

The face-off between the traditional ruler and the leader of the Igbo in the state deepened, last week, after the Deji issued a month notice to Ilohehika to consider accept the title of “Leader”.

He has been given up to February 28 to eat the humble pie.
Iloheika is required to write to the Oba to accept the new title.
The Deji, had, last year, banned the Eze Ndigbo title following a confrontation with the holder and the igbo across Ondo protested by closing their shops for weeks.

After intervention by stakeholders, including the state Council of Chiefs, the matter was resolved but the “fight “ continued underground until last week when the hammer came hard on the Eze Ndigbo.

Aladelusi, in his letter of ultimatum to Ilohehika said: “It should be noted that the Leader is the new approved traditional title for any Igbo leader within Akure and environ.
“In view of the possible rejection of the new title, the Igbo community shall produce another Leader from among them at the expiration of the ultimatum”. Meanwhile, the Igbo in the state are rallying support for their leader.

Over the past few decades, oil and gas revenue has helped the United Arab Emirates develop at a breakneck pace. Its glistening megacity Dubai is now home to the world's tallest building and countless other accolades, while just last year there were new plans announced to build a completely new “city of happiness.”

The UAE’s latest venture may set new heights in terms of ambition, however. On Tuesday, at the sidelines of the World Government Summit in Dubai, the UAE announced that it was planning to build the first city on Mars by 2117. According to CNBC, UAE engineers presented a concept city at the event about the size of Chicago for guests to explore.

In a statement, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and vice president of the UAE, sounded confident about the project. “Human ambitions have no limits, and whoever looks into the scientific breakthroughs in the current century believes that human abilities can realize the most important human dream,” Maktoum said.

And despite the grandiose nature of the idea, the 100-year-plan does emphasize some practical steps. “The Mars 2117 Project is a long-term project,” Maktoum explained in the statement, adding that the first order of business would be making space travel appeal to young Emiratis, with special programs in space sciences being set up at universities in the UAE.

The project will also create an Emirati scientific team, but that would expand to include international scientists. In particular, these teams would be seeking to develop faster transportation to and from the planet, as well as researching what the settlement would look like and how it will be sustainable in terms of food, energy and transportation.

An underwater 'lost continent' two-thirds the size of Australia and being named Zealandia has been discovered.

And the giant land mass submerged in the southwest Pacific is also a step closer to being recognised as a separate continent in its own right if scientists get their way.

New Zealand (the country) sits on top of the 1.9 million-square-mile expanse which may be 94% covered by water but meets all the other criteria applied to each of the seven other continents.

Once part of the Gondwana super-continent which also included Australia, Zealandia is roughly the same size as the Indian subcontinent.


It is believed to have broken away about 100 million years ago, according to geologists, and sank between 60-85 million years ago.

As well as both the North and South Islands of New Zealand, Zealandia also includes New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, the Lord Howe Island group and Elizabeth and Middleton reefs among other territories and islands previously grouped with Australia in Australasia.

A paper published in the Geological Society of America's journal, GSA Today, says: "The scientific value of classifying Zealandia as a continent is much more than just an extra name on a list.

"That a continent can be so submerged yet unfragmented makes it (useful)... in exploring the cohesion and breakup of continental crust."

Mr Mortimer told TVNZ: "If we could pull the plug on the oceans, it would be clear to everybody that we have mountain chains and a big, high standing continent.

"What we hope is that Zealandia will appear on world maps, in schools, everywhere.

"I think the revelation of a new continent is pretty exciting."

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, says he will pray for Gabriel Jesus’ quick recovery after the forward striker was forced off the pitch early during Monday’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth.


Jesus, who had scored three goals in his first four City appearances before the game at the Vitality Stadium, appeared to twist his ankle in the first half before being replaced by Sergio Aguero.

Guardiola says he hopes the injury isn’t serious, with the 19-year-old set to be assessed by City’s medical team on Tuesday.

“Hopefully I will pray it will not be a big issue,” he said.

“I was especially pleased with the performance, that’s why we got the result. We could have scored more goals so we played a good game in one of the toughest games away. I know how tough Bournemouth are. Except 10 minutes in the second half when they pushed a lot, we controlled it and our build up is much, much better.

“Every player is more in the position and I’m so happy for all the players because they played a really good performance. We know how the gap between all the teams is so close, between second and sixth. Today we started the game in fifth position in the Premier League and now we are second so it means everybody is there.

“It’s so up and down and you know if lose you a game you are going to be down so it will be a good battle to qualify for the Champions League next season. We saw in the games against Arsenal and Liverpool how tough and how dangerous Bournemouth are and we made a real performance in all senses except 10 minutes in the second half when they pushed a lot.

“That is normal in this stadium, with these players. I am so pleased with what we have done and especially the last 10, 15 minutes we did the best way to keep the result with a thousand million passes and in the right moment, the attacker runs in behind. We did really well.”

City, who appear to be finding form at just the right time having lost just once in their last eight games in all competitions, moved up to second in the table and cut Chelsea’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points after the win.

The sticker and its memes are being used on Facebook to spam comment sections to detract from their subject matter. The Verge points out that a single New York Times post was Trash Doved 92 times.

That has led to numerous requests to ban the meme altogether and free up the internet as a place for public discourse again.
