Why You Can Never Be Rich In Nigeria - The Bitter Truth! by Knetpro(m): 9:23pm On Aug 03, 2012
Here is why you can never be rich in Nigeria! Unless...

Unless what? Unless through the grace of God. But there is more to becoming rich in Nigeria than through the grace of God alone. Did the Holy Book not say that "...and the Lord will bless the work of your hands"? What if you do not have any work that you are engaged in, what will there be for the Lord to bless? Nothing, of course!

Therefore, you are about to learn some cold, harsh, bitter and even shocking truths about living conditions in Nigeria and the only way to becoming rich in Nigeria, the self-acclaimed giant of Africa. So, I advise you to sit down, relax, make sure that you are very comfortable on your sofa or bed and stay glued to this post from beginning to end!

Are you ready? Okay, let's go there.

There are three strong reasons why you can never be rich in Nigeria. The reasons are as follows:

1. Corrupt leaders who amass all the wealth to themselves, formulate and implement obnoxious economic policies to impoverish the common man further - like the removal of the fuel subsidy saga only to give civil servants a paltry sum of N18,000 as minimum wage after the cost of everything in Nigeria has hit the roof. Wicked souls!

2. Too many graduates chasing after very few lucrative employment opportunities in the country. The unemployment rate is steadily rising with the present graduates not having anything to do, yet, the higher institutions keep turning out fresh graduates in their numbers to join the already over-saturated labour market.

3. Unfavourable business environment, such as epileptic power supply and lack of infrastructural facilities, for small businesses to thrive.

Now, let us examine the above points in greater detail.

1. Corrupt Leaders

A major reason why you can never be rich in Nigeria is that there are too many corrupt leaders in government. The only business of these corrupt leaders in power is to amass all the wealth that they can amass to themselves, formulate and implement obnoxious policies - like the removal of the fuel subsidy saga only to give civil servants a paltry sum of N18,000 as minimum wage after the cost of everything in Nigeria has hit the roof. Wicked souls!

Now, to start with, did you know that at least 60% of Nigerians are scarcely managing to get by, to survive in their own country? And another 30% are living below the poverty line? Just in case you are wondering what that is, the poverty line is living below a dollar a day.

A dollar a day means living below N160 a day, the current exchange rate of a dollar to the Naira. Therefore, it simply means that the majority of Nigerians are living in abject poverty. Now, when l speak of Nigerians living below N160 a day, l am not referring to a single individual. In many cases, a family of at least a husband, wife and 5 children live on less than N200 a day.

You do not have to be a genius to work it all out. Majority of Nigerian workers are civil servants, many of whom are between the grade levels 1 and 4. With the new minimum wage pegged at N18,000, it means that a family of 7 will make do with N600 a day for feeding, transport, rent, healthcare and every other expenses that they will have to incur on a daily basis.

Even if the bread winner of the family is a level 4 government worker, with his salary less than N25,000, his family of 7 persons would have about N800 to share among themselves for their day to day living expenses. But, if they spend everything on living expenses alone, how can they ever hope to build their own house and move to their own apartment, or buy a car to ease their movement every once in a while?

What about the children's education? We all know that education is the most expensive single investment that every parent can bequeath to his or her offspring nowadays. At first glance, did the N800 not look like a huge sum to you? But, after looking at it again, does it look so huge after all? However, at least 30% of Nigerians ARE NOT living below N800 a day, but they are living below N160 a day. What does that suggest to you?

You can see that with so much wealth that is available to this country, the majority of Nigerians are actually suffering in their father land. And for the avoidance of doubt, Nigeria is ranked among the first 6 oil producing countries in the world, yet it is ranked among the 20 poorest nations across the globe. Is that not a huge paradox? Indeed, it is!

But, do you find it extremely difficult to believe that in the midst of all these abject poverty that is prevalent everywhere, there are a few greedy politicians, less than 1% of the total population, who are indeed living in unapologetic affluence and opulence?

If it were the money that they personally acquired on their own outside government before assuming political office, I would have no quarrel with that. But, it is the ill-gotten wealth that they acquire after assuming public office. That is why they will never declare their assets publicly after living office.

Yes, these few individuals travel abroad almost on a daily basis like someone going to his backyard. They possess chains of buildings and fleet of cars purchased with stolen money from the national treasury. Most of the cars are hardly ever driven but parked and covered with tarpaulins in their garages for many months and even years unend. They send their children to study abroad, while neglecting to do anything about the state of our educational system.

While many Nigerians starve to bed daily, eating three course meals at a single sitting is a common thing to these corrupt leaders. They take appetizers just before their meals and dessert after they have had their meals. But, does the common man even know the meaning of "appetizer" or "dessert", much less having three square meals on a daily basis. Well, what do you know, their dogs are even well-fed than some of their own fellow country men and women!

There is no doubt about it whatsoever that many of our politicians are terribly corrupt. They are so corrupt that if there was a much worse word than corrupt to use to describe them, it would fittingly describe them perfectly.
Can you imagine an ordinary local government chairman going home with a security vote of N2.5m monthly, besides their fueling imprest, office imprest (meant to run the office which is never used for the purpose but simply put into their pockets), their normal allowances and salaries? At the end of it all, a mere local government chairman can go home with at least N5m every single month of the year.

What about the governors, commissioners, house of assembly members, ministers, senators and legislators? Let's not even go there. Put together, can all the politicians who are holding one government office position or the other be more than a hundred thousand persons? Certainly not. Yet, the amount that these few people take home monthly, a hundred million Nigerians do not even take them home daily (not including a small number of hardworking Nigerians who are working in various choice companies and government establishments).

Out of greed and a selfish desire to amass so much wealth for their great great great great great great great great great grand children yet unborn, the politicians would never formulate and implement policies that would favour the majority of Nigerians. Their sole objective of being in power is self-centred. Any policy that would favour the common man never sees the light of day.

Even the minimum wage of a lousy N18,000 for government workers took the president and his governors two good years to implement - after fuel subsidy had been removed and everything else had gone up. And even at that it was not implemented across board. Will you believe it if l told you that the salary of the highest paid civil servant, a level 17 officer, is not up to N500,000? Though unbelievable, it is true!

That is the simple reason why you can never be rich in Nigeria! The government of the day does not have a human face. They do not operate an all-inclusive policy. Their policies are tailored towards meeting their own personal selfish interests alone and does not include that of the majority of Nigerians.

In the midst of all these corrupt leaders who do not have the welfare of the common man at heart, it really takes the grace of God to be able to survive, let alone become rich in Nigeria.

2. Too Many Graduates

The second reason why you can never be rich in Nigeria is that there are too many graduates chasing after very few lucrative employment opportunities in the country.

What is your line of profession, if l may ask? Are you...

a medical doctor working in a government hospital or any other government establishment?

a professional nurse working in a government hospital or any other government establishment?

any other health worker working in a government hospital or any other government establishment?

working in an oil company or any other multinational company?

My guess is that you are not. I am also guessing that you are not a dubious politician who has several sources of stealing government money and impoverishing the majority of Nigerians as a whole.

Then, are you a very successful business man like Aliko Dangote?

If not, and you do not belong among any of the other categories of workers mentioned above, it simply means, like myself, you are just managing to get by. Or, much worse, you rely on other people to get by. Quite frankly, it simply means that you are not among the rich folks in Nigeria.

As a matter of fact, there are very few high paying jobs around, while there are too many graduates chasing after those few lucrative jobs. So, if you are a graduate applicant looking for a job, what are the chances that you will be employed in a very juicy and lucrative job? It is next to zero.

So, if you desire to be rich in Nigeria, you cannot look to the government for help. They do not even know that you exist. Neither can you hope to be gainfully employed in a very lucrative job with a take home pay of at least N300,000 to N500,000 monthly. The competition is just too great and stiff.

So, there must be another way.

3. Unfavourable Business Environment

The Nigerian government must share a larger part of the blame for the unfavourable business environment in the country, such as epileptic power supply and lack of infrastructural facilities, or small business to thrive. They budget and spend huge sums of money annually on power and other infrastructural facilities, yet the power situation remains as epileptic as ever and nothing to show for it in terms of infrastructural development across the country.

But, thank God for China! If not for China, many small scale businesses would have long gone under long before now. With Chinese products flooding everywhere in the country, from electronics to computers to household equipments and even generators, China is the saviour of the common man.

With this highly unfavourable business environment, how can anyone interested in setting up a small scale business hope to do so successfully and rely on the business to make a living out of it or even become rich later on in life? It is expecting the almost impossible, indeed.

For instance, can you think of any business that you can start with less than N10,000 or even less than N50,000 in Nigeria and hope to make a steady income from it on a monthly basis?

To tell you the truth, such businesses are not many. Even if we assume that you will not pay store rent and that the money will be used solely for the products or goods that you are going to sell, the money is still too small to make any appreciable impact on either the business or the owner's living standard over a period of time.

I will give you just two examples in this regard - recharge card business and barbing saloon. Though the recharge card business is one that you can start with a small capital, you must invest at least N500,000 to N1m in order to be able to make a reasonable income from the business.

A barbing saloon too is not a business that requires a lot of capital to begin. But, even at that, you will need at least N50,000 for you to be able to start the business well. Let's say you buy a small generator ("I better pass my neighbour"wink for about N12,000, chairs and a table for N15,000 and 2 clippers for N8,000. Finally, the store rent for one year takes N24,000 at the rate of N2,000 per month.

Total amount of investment is already shooting above the N50,000 capital that you have for the business. But, if the store rent is at the rate of N1,500 and you buy one clipper instead of two, you will just manage to start the business somehow, without having any change left to take care of any immediate operational expenses for your new business.

However, the truth about such small businesses is that you can hardly ever be rich from doing them. At the end of the day, you just manage to get by, to live from hand to mouth. So, even the business environment does not favour the common man in Nigeria.

So, there must be another option to be rich in Nigeria. And indeed there is.

How to Become Rich in Nigeria

Now that we have concluded that you can never be rich in Nigeria either through government policies or chasing after the non-existent high paying jobs in the country, just how can somebody become rich in Nigeria?

Additionally, since there are very few business opportunities for the common man with very little start-up capital to engage in, what other option is available for the average Nigerian just managing to get by to take advantage of?

Here it is: home based businesses! Believe me, home based businesses is the perfect business for the common man.

Apart from the fact that you can effectively manage your home front conveniently, you will still be able to attend to your business at the same time. A great advantage is that you do not lose working time that you would otherwise lose to moving from your home to your business premises every day because you work from home.

Additionally, you do not have to pay any office staff to take charge of your front office for you. Similarly, in some cases, you do not spend extra money on generators and fuelling expenses to run your business.

If you are really managing to get by, you can start an "aloko" (used clothes) business. There is money in it, I tell you! With N50,000, you can travel to onitsha or Aba and get your stock of wares without much stress. You will be amazed at the quantity of materials that N50,000 can actually purchase for you.

There is quick turnover in the business and you can make 100% profit on your stock. Additionally, you can even start selling right from your home to neighbours and friends. You could also take them to the market in the evening when majority of people visit the market more and simply lay them down on any available spot on the ground.

On the other hand, is that a business for someone who went to the four walls of a higher institution and calls himself a graduate? I agree that there is dignity in labour, but if you must do this type of business as a graduate, you have to add a touch of class to it.

Additionally, a graduate who has decided to set up a home based business should really set up a business that will challenge his mental faculties and, above all else, stand him in good stead as an authority in his field of endeavour.

What sort of business is that? It is internet based businesses. Indeed, internet based businesses are the best form of business that anyone, especially a graduate in any discipline, can engage in at this present day Nigeria. Why is this so? This is because internet awareness is growing rapidly on a daily basis. Hence, the internet community in Nigeria is increasing at a faster rate than it was a few years back.

What implication does this have for you? It means that if you start a home based business now, you will be entering the business very early when the internet community is still growing and that particular line of business that you may decide to settle for is still relatively a fertile field.

Just imagine people who started internet based businesses 5 to 7 years ago. They are doing very well for themselves right now with making a living on the internet. And, believe me, this is not like forex trade. Internet business can never fail. It will only continue to excel and excel.

But, if you do not believe me, ask Seun. He will tell you that since the past 7 years that he has been engaged in internet based business, the internet has been good to him. He will also tell you that there is no business which even come close to internet business (internet business is not online scam or "419", mind you!).

Therefore, if you want to make lots of money from any kind of business and become rich in Nigeria, internet driven home based businesses is the way to go.

What You Need for Your Home Business

So, what do you need to set up a home based business? You need the following items to set up a home based business:

1. In any business, the big letter M, and 5-letter word, is the major determinant of whether you will start the business at all. Same thing applies to home based businesses.

Hence, the first thing you need to set up your home based business is money. You need the sum of a hundred thousand Naira (N100,000) as your start-up capital. Or, if you cannot afford such a huge amount, you can make do with N50,000 instead.

2. The next thing you need is just 1 highly profitable and promising home based business idea for your home business. To give you an idea of how to determine what that home business idea is, what is it that you love doing the most?

Or, rephrased differently, what is it that you are most passionate about? You are in a better position to know that.

If you are having difficulties arriving at your 1 best home based business idea, please see the following web page for sound home business ideas: Top 10 Best Home Based Business Ideas.

So, once you have determined what your 1 best home based business idea is, you make it the subject of your home based business.

3. Finally, you need a domain name and web hosting from a reliable, efficient and the best web host in Nigeria. Be sure that the web host that you eventually settle for gives you a fair deal.

As a matter of fact, your proposed web host should give you at least 24/7 technical support, a superb customer service, free domain name registration, unlimited web space, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Those are the basic things that you need to start a home based business. With the N100,000 start-up capital, you can buy a brand new laptop for about N80,000. I strongly recommend that you do not buy a fairly used laptop in order for the laptop to last for as long as possible.

On the other hand, if you cannot afford a brand new laptop, then you can settle for a brand new desktop computer so as to reduce the cost of purchasing your computer, which happens to be your principal working tool. With about N35,000, you can get a brand new top-notch Pentium IV computer minus the printer.

Once you have purchased the computer, the next thing is to get your computer connected to the internet. You can buy an internet modem from any of the network providers with N5,000 or less. Personally, I use Glo Netpro. I also alternate it with Etisalat service. I heard too that Airtel is equally pretty good and fast to browse with. But, l don't know about that of MTN or any other service provider.

With your internet-connected computer, laptop or desktop, and your domain name registered and hosted with a very reliable and efficient perfect web host in Nigeria, you are all set to make a success of your home based business and well on your way to becoming a rich man in Nigeria.

Just remember to thank me later for this information when your millions begin to roll in. But, if you scoff and mock in disbelief at all that you have read in this post without taking any action about it, do not complain if 10 years from now you are still where you are, or have made very little progress. Remember too that good things come only to them that believe.

So, start by believing what you have read. And if you have any doubts whatsoever, ask questions from me or from any other person. Investigate the matter further - either on the internet or among those whom you personally know that are already engaged in the business. Whatever you do, the important thing is to take action.

You will never be able to make any meaningful progress about your financial situation unless you take action. And that time is NOW.

Last word: Do not expect a different result if you continue to do things the way that you have always done them.

Me, unpatriotic fool, right? We will see who is unpatriotic fool a few years from now. Are you among the "boys that are smiling to the bank"? I guess not!

I think the bottom line of this problem is the ideal which is deeply ingrained in us that we all must be rich, This is the same problem those politicians you're talking about also have, in as much all people think of becoming rich there is bound to be problem. one will trample on another to get rich at all cost, No wonder there is wisdom in the warning the holy Bible gave, it warns against toiling to be rich. When all of us begin to have that mindset greediness will be nailed

This guy wey write dis post got it wrong so many places. First of all, i want to get the kind of richness you are talking about(ego na esi isi).Let me tell you brother, if you have that mindset of making money more than rockefeller, you wil hit the rocks. Secondly, you article is full of lies, how can you tell nigerians that it is only internet business that will give them money to be comfortable.I know a young cousin of mine that studied building tech in a polytechnic and graduated 4 years ago and he has built his house in the villa and getting married next year, there are so many young boys making cool money, am not saying that they are billionaires but they are making good money with bright future. I know relatives of mine who are into steel construction and are making money, those who are into trading and are making money. You said something about dignity in work, let me tell you as a graduate you can go into any work that will give you money, all you got to do is have a target, you must not do that job for ever use the money you got and invest it.Believe me, am not mocking your article but some of what you said are not good for the minds of our youths. There are young boys who are into areas like freight forwarding and their business are growing, some of my friends in Aba are into professional tailoring and they are taking their business into the next level, some are into interior decoration and events management.Men there are lots of them but i need to stop here
