well you might not have so much choices in Nigeria.

Just take advantage of where you are right now and tailor it to your dreams.

I believe in dreams and not opportunities/luck. There is no doubt that 1 out of every 500 applicants would secure a job in the big 4 (Audit firms) at the end of the recruitment exercise.

My advise is that you plan and work towards it.

Start small with what u have. Expand and u will make it. Starting in a big or small company does not matter much. What matters is your focus. That is your career goals and your efforts.

i work at PwC and i can say authoritatively that entry level 2'1 is minimum o! and its rather difficult to enter as the test is quite hard and theres essay writing. The interview is more or less in 3 parts which is intensive- you really have to be sure of your self and worth to talk, lol, its a great place to start a career and i LOVE it here, evryone is extremely cordial and nice to each other. Like a work environment abroad. If you can get in- then try to, :-) the experience is worth it,

When i was still in college i had the same ideology as most people here have, that to become a great person or be more exposed and knowledgable you should start your career in a consulting firm and then move to oil and gas or wherever, i believed working the bank was redundant kind of work. Infact back in the day my slogan was " Accenture or nothing"

I like to think i am a little wiser now, and i have realised something that has changed my orientation it has helped me in my job search and even during interviews i have attended and to sharpen my career goals.

Work itself is redundant, no matter how challenging a job may be someday the challenge will become a routine, What i am saying in effect that the one thing that will make you you and make you excel in your career is you. It pays to get on the job experience but the truth is you learn what you want to learn and become who you decide to become.

If you want to excel in your career wherever you are be it in a bank or in consulting, you have to make an effort to develop your self personally, alot of people spend their days job hopping without developing themselves.

Books, people underestimate the power of reading and becoming smart, the biggest financial and economic gurus spend most of their time reading and reading and reading, you want to learn strategy then study strategy, practical experience is good and it helps but it will not make you excel, its what you have up there that will lead you. My mentor is a force to reckon with in his industry of specialisation, his background will shock the whole lot of you, where he has worked will shock you even more, yeah its a multinational but its just not the sort of place you think you can learn so much. Yet when he talks, bankers, oil workers, consultants all listen to him, you should see the size of his library.

If you think a company will build you,.then you are in for big disappointment, its not really where but what you do with where you find yourself that matters, be it Shell, Accenture, a bank, if you are good you will stand out from your peers and shine, everybody has their own individual career path to take, find it and don't try to follow other peoples paths.

That is the right perspective, right there.
Just try to find a good place where you can learn and benefit from their system.
Everything else will unfold from there. But you have to put effort into developing yourself, even though I would say at the initial take time out to study the general environment, and don't commit or fix your mind in a particular place just yet. Be a sponge, soak up all the knowledge you can, and keep your eyes peeled for unfolding events.
My early days out of school, there wasn't any high tech industry to speak of per se. Now the GSM industry has dusted even the traditional oil and gas heavyweights in terms of work environment, cutting edge technology, exposure to best of breed practices, if not in pay. Who knows which industry will be the next big thing?
The main thing is that you arm yourself with the knowledge, skills and palis that you need. The rest na 'positioning';
Cheers.

i hear its always better to start a career at kpmg, accenture, pwc and the likes of them, than to go start with oil companies and the much bigger organisations/non finance related companies,(that is for accountant, finance and admin people) considering a longterm goal of larger paycheck and higher position.Could anybody shed light on this please,
The truth.

interesting contributions. But i wonder whether all these applies in Nigeria.
The way i see it , the best place to work in this country is where you get employed. Only very few people get the luxury of more than one offer. Its ok to dream all the dream, when you are in school, but the fact remains that you cannot work where you are not employed. A lot of people in the banking sector am sure are not happy being there, but what have they been able to do? NOTHING.
Re: Best Place To Start A Career? by seunallday: 3:05pm On Mar 10, 2009
this is by far thee most helpful threads on nairaland.

i tink starting from pwc , kpmg and accenture is relative to whhat you wanna do with ur life, if u take ur engineerin cert to pwc, u will come out a chartered accountant, and av noticed a whole lot dont have a clue what they want, all we want is to get work in a good bank, collect 250k per annum, thats why pple keeep askin the most annoyin question in the world "how much do they pay".

true, if u r lloking for a career in financial services, experiences in these firms will do u great, but how many will they take, my file is still in kpmg gathering up mad dust. im not hating on them kpmg, pwc peeps, but im currently serving in a small stockbroking firm and im getting mad valuable experience, not just in the sector but on how to run a business, but i think the best place to start is to where you find yourself, make the most of all your opportunities, if i get my kpmg connect today, im nmost likely getting tax, which may not get me as far in my career as fin advisory would go, but kpmg is not the only place to gt that experienc, ther still a lot a guys workin in these firms that dont know shit or at least as much as my friend in Kajola investment would know because of the responsibilties she has handled.

then read, robbie lex is so right.

My friends,in career choise one need to be careful,i quite agree with those saying one should engaged in where your heart is
and the oil and gas is a place to start from,

Seeing the expression of members on this section of the forum gives one concern but with hope of better days. One wonder why career minded members and job opportunities seekers in the oil and gas sectors are often ignorance of the workings of the sector. Jobs in the oil sector is life –long. It remains-even at the face of current recession-the best place to earn comfortable living(HIGH INCOME)It is the most highly paid industry.
