Nigeria No Longer Imports Cement!! by billante(m): 9:31pm On Aug 24, 2012
Nigeria has not imported cement since the
beginning of the year as a result of increased
output in the locally manufactured product
which as at date, outstripped the needs of
the local market, Engr Joseph Makoju,
Chairman, Cement Manufacturers Association
of Nigeria CMAN, has revealed.
Besides, cement manufacturers have also set
an output growth of 56.25 per cent to 20
million tonnes, up from about 12.8 million in
2011, he added.
Making the revelation when he led a
delegation of cement manufacturers on an
official visit to the Ministry of Works, Makoju
explained that the feat achieved this year was
made possible through improved investments
in plants and other operational inputs.
Consequently, he said the country which has
a total installed capacity of about 28 million
tonnes yearly can now look for the export
markets for exploration in cement sales.
“The projected output is about 25 million
tonnes more than the current local demand
of about 17.5 million. In 2002, total local
cement production was only two million
tonnes and in that year, we were talking
about a local demand of eight million.
Importation was at its peak.
“As we are speaking here today, I am happy
to report that last year, total local production
has gone to 12.8 million tonnes in 2011 from
two million in 2002 and as we are meeting
here today, we are projecting that total local
production this year will be 19-20 million
tonnes,” he said.
“The total local demand is projected at 17
million tonnes. So, the local production is in
excess of local demand. I am so happy to say
that for the first time in our history, from
January till date, there has been no
importation of cement into the country.
“We are now in a situation of where we don’t
need to depend on imports but on local
production. The total installed capacity,
when you put all the total local production
together today; we have 28 million tonnes of
installed capacity.
“So, Nigeria has arrived to be recognised as a
cement producing country. Now, that is why
we believe that this success story can be
leveraged on to impact on another problem
area of the country, which is bad road
network.

Good one, some of the positive pointers of the GEJ administration, gradually, cement price will be forced down and housing will be more affordable.

It has nothing to do with gej and more to do with dangote.

If the factors favourable for investment was not put in place,Dangote,Ibeto and co would've preferred importation,so,keep quiet.
Re: Nigeria No Longer Imports Cement!! by hercules07: 10:05pm On Aug 24, 2012
They would rather import as it is cheaper, but, dangote is too invested in local production and he has got the government on his side. I doubt the story sha as I believe ibetostill imports. We should not praise government for doing their job, they should be praised for extra-ordinary feat.

I recall when Obasanjo STARTED this Import Substitution Policy for Cement some years ago, very many people almost ate him raw(shouting about price of the cement etc) just like they are presently doing with the moves to do same for Rice, Cassava, Fertilizers etc. For eg, most of the people foolishly criticizing the recent Cassava move of the govt do not consider the fact that Nigeria spends more than #600billion each year(our single largest import bill apart from Petroleum) to import Wheat mostly rom the USA and concomitant "export" of jobs. Same ignorant attitude is also shown in the Rice Import substitution move.

Some decisions just have to be taken , and am glad that this govt is pushing on with its sound import substitution policies.

uncle, if u have any idea of economics, you will agree with me that monopoly is not consumer friendly. nigerian govt/economy is confused. what type of economy are we practising? are we in a closed economy where a country depends solely on locally manufactured goods or otherwise?
if importing cement will make cement cheap, what is wrong with that? do u want us to depend on locally manufactured cement that will cost us more and benefit the producers/manufacturers more.
all these moves lack ambition and vision. how long will a country of over 200 million ppl depend on dangote for everything?
allow importation and encourage local manufacturers so that consumers will have option as only the competition between suppliers will put consumers on the table of alternatives.
you come here to celebrate a monopolised economy where one man is the supplier.

What Government? Anyone who tries to give this to Government is not only wicked but a deceiver. If anything, Nigeria has mainly Dangote to thank for this.

That said, I will rather import cheap than purchase local expensive cement though. grin grin grin grin

Does it mean that Ibeto is not importing cement anymore? Where did he built his own local manucfacturing plant? PH? Calabar? ...well,my concern is dat the price of cement should reduce to below 1000.

el Mor0nicus, let me guess, the simple truth is that Goodluck Jonathan built companies in Nigeria to increase local extraction to satisfy local demand? Care to tell us where he got the money? Where these companies are, and how much Nigerian people are making, if at all from these local quarries built by Jonathan Goodluck?
Re: Nigeria No Longer Imports Cement!! by Johndoe100(m): 6:50pm On Aug 25, 2012
Mumu, governments don't build companies grin grin

No one does actually. The governments policies encouraged the private sector to go into these.

In as much as this is a good development, in the sense that it will reduce the strain on our forex market. It will only make sense to the consumers, if the prices are brought down, because as it stands now, Nigerian cement remains one of the most expensive in the world. If the prices are not reduced, a new market for imported cement will automatically spring up. And even if the government decides to ban importation, smuggling will definitely provide an alternative market.

I think Nigerian Cement manufacturers have a rare opportunity to capture the West African market now or else, foreign manufacturers with come in with very competitive prices and edge them out of the regional market.
