If it is a serious crime, accused persons are not allowed to speak to anyone except their lawyers. And the police are also not allowed to give official statement(s), until the accused person(s) has/have been charged. That's how it works in the UK. Questioning is different from confession, and from the article; the accused person has confessed, or he's still confessing. So for now, no one is allowed to speak to a third party.
