justwise:

That figure was not stated in UKBA website neither was it stated in bbc or skynews website that reported the news first.

That may be but I asked because it should not even be a surprise.

There are more international students from nigeria than any other African countries.

I still don't understand what this is all about.I read it on yahoo news yesterday and couldn't make a head or tail of the news.I still can't.
For one thing, when did universities start issuing visas?..that's the duty of embassies. On a second note, what has sponsorship got to do with all of this?

I just need someone to clarify these things. Thanks in advance.

Universities 'sponsor' a student that has applied to their institution, saying he/she is genuine and is coming to study. The student applies and is given a visa on the basis of that 'sponsorship' and it is the responsibility of the university to ensure that students it vouched for to receive visas are indeed studying. If/when the university discovers students it vouched for are not studying, such students should be reported to the authorities for deportation.

Apparently, LondonMet has failed to keep track of students' visa status, whether they were genuinely studying, had the right qualifications or not and so on.

This is the answer here...

universities and other colleges in the uk are licensed by uk border agency as being able to provide quality education to international students. The license is called sponsor license. Losing a sponsor license means that the university is trusted no more. It could be that the university is admitting students who have no legal right to remain in the uk or something like that. If a license of a sponsor is withdrawn then a university can no longer admit foreign students and all current international students could either find another uni to continue or be deported.

No matter how such shame is big, it is only limited 2 this world. D greatest shame 4 any man is to miss heaven, d kingdom of God through Christ Jesus. May God count us worthy in Jesus name.

Not strictly true.

Realpolitik, my dear. You see, the British system is overrun by Asians. The British often give the impression of targeting blacks when in realty they are targeting Asians. The black presence is too weak so our hurt is often disregarded and we're regardlessly used as front to cover underlying issues of concern in regards to race, ethnicity in relation to resources.

The National Union of Students (NUS) today (Friday) welcomed UKBA’s decision to allow London Met Students to complete their course or continue to study up until the end of the academic year (2012/13), whichever is sooner.

UKBA had previously announced it would serve notices to all international students at London Met on Monday 1 October 2012, giving notice of 60 days leave to remain in the UK.

At the suggestion of the judge, UKBA had agreed to guarantee the position of international students - who have the proper immigration status and who are currently studying or due to starting study at London Met this term, as well as those seeking transfer to other institutions - until the end of their course or up until the end of the academic year (2012/13), whichever is sooner.

Represented by leading law firm Bindmans, NUS was granted permission by the High Court this morning to intervene as a third party representing the needs and interests of students in the UK, and provided evidence to the court.

The announcement came following the High Court’s decision today to grant permission to London Met to apply for a full Judicial Review against the UK Border Agency’s (UKBA’s) decision to revoke its status as Highly Trusted Sponsor (HTS) of international students.

Liam Burns, NUS President said:

“We are delighted that as a result of our third party intervention, interim relief has been granted by the High Court to current international students who have been unfairly affected by UKBA’s decision.”

“It is welcome that UKBA are now complying with the Court’s ruling and guaranteeing protection of the position of international students at London Met for the duration of their courses and the coming academic year, whichever is sooner.”

“Our third party intervention was crucial in ensuring the interests of students were recognised by the High Court.”

“These students came to London in good faith and had already spent tens of thousands of pounds on their education, before having the rug pulled from under their feet.”

Commenting on future challenges, Liam Burns said:

“The future for international students at London Met after July 2013 is still uncertain and we need clarity as soon as possible.”

“This whole ugly episode has also thrown up wider questions about the treatment of international students in this country. Unless these questions are urgently addressed, the UK’s global reputation for higher education remains tarnished.”

This is good news for genuine students who got caught up in the mess.
