Good day everyone.
I'm a professional webmaster with over 4 years in active experience coding several websites and also a programming assistance to several people and firms.
The sad thing is that i work as a freelancer to several BIg companies but i'm still very broke. Most times people think i'm a millionaire in dollars because of the type of work i do but within myself i know i am not close to that.
My agents keep promising to pay while i handle big jobs but i cant see the pay coming. I'm thinking whether to pic up an entirely different career so i can afford to live a comfortable life. Pls kindly advice

If you are good and you have a resume/portfolio to back you up, you should search job sites for companies and development teams that have vacancies of a remote web developer.

You should request to have all your money paid before handing over a project or uploading to its permanent location.

why start a project when your client is yet to pay at least 50%?
and make it clear to them that you expect your balance 2 weeks after site goes live.

so if after 2 weeks, they still don't pay, you can take actions
you cant be soaking gari while they are smiling to the bank.

and dont go about developing demos except they are UAC or Dangote or FG
hello! they dont ask TFC for demo chicken before ordering.
most of those guys asking for demo are never always ready to even start the project, they mostly want to sweeten their tommy
by looking at what they can achieve when money comes, all at your expense, you will even take a cab with your money to meet with them so they can see the demo.

I realized in my 8years that all client i ever developed a demo for (in my naive years), never ordered.
those who actually ordered, never asked for a demo

one thing you need to do is have your own project that will fetch you money later on
so if you cant get a serious client, focus your project.
it's cheap working on your own project. we have guys here working on their projects, Voguepay, Hosting etc.

goodluck

^^^ In addition to the above:
1) I hear that in Nigeria, you better charge 75% up front. After all, even tailor expects 100% up front. Why not you?
2) Even with an advance payment, how much are you charging over all? If for example you charge 100K, paying in 2 installments of 50K each, wetin b 50K and how long will that last you, spending-wise, until you get the final payment?

Good luck!

I don't know which web design freelancer can be a millonaire in dollars in Nigeria. You can only achieve that feat if you're a business man. What freelancers get is pocket money.

Maybe you are not doing things right, that is the way i see it. Even if you dont charge 75% upfront, i have all sort of stunts in my sleeves - like a site vanishing offline mysteriously if client fails to pay - even if them like, they host the site themselves and change the control panel details.

You must first learn how to protect your work, a lot of agents out there are greedy human beings. Then you also need to be creative and smart and decide on which jobs you take and which ones you dont.

And yes, listen to the advice of my OGAs above, and it will be nice if lekke ojikutu, abidemi and others speaks up as well. . .

Don't despise the days of your little beginning, cos nothing good comes easy. Be consistence and be more committed to your cause. In no time it will speak and the real you will show forth. smiley

It's not just about how many jobs you've done because like i said, the money you get from freelancing is pocket money. You only start making a kill when you start thinking like a business man.

How does having a mobile version translate to being professional.

The point i'm trying to make is that it's better to run your web business like a proper business.

Here is my advise, think towards building a website (web presence, business or so) for yourself, that will be making you money. Come up with an idea (the cost of developing the site, will be eliminated - since you will design it).

Once you have a successful site that is generating you income, it will provide you a residual income - other people's website can come later and you will earning additional income.

This is Nigeria, if you see any other related business that will generate you income, you can still do (it may not necessarily mean you quit your current profession).

NB: Its wise you collect not less than 70% of the total cost of a web project, before you lift a finger (the only thing you may rush is to register the domain once agreement have been reached). Its better they take the work elsewhere, than to work and no pay. Also clearly state the days/weeks it will take to get your balance once its completed (don't over hand over logins before getting your balance). I believe there is room for everyone online.

Cheers!

That is where i was driving at earlier on, some webmasters are business-minded - that is what brings success, not just your ability to write super-codes.

Here is my take:
as long as we Web Masters, Web Developers, Software Developers, Programmers and the likes continue to do our things at frelance level, we shall remain cashless, we wld not be able to drive Range Sport or even Beetle. *sad*
As long as we show clients that we are hungry, they will continue to take us for a ride and pay N20,000 ($128) for web design, hosting for 1yr, with support and service; this is the begining of poverty.
In a nut shell bro, have a plan, dont fall for anything, its better to stay hungry sometimes when u stand ur ground with a client.
Learn the "bizness" aspect of this career.
Lastly, if you have the passion, this career is a noble and worthwhile one.

I wish u Patience and Goodluck.
