Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, insists the Federal Government alone cannot successfully address the security challenges facing the country.

Speaking during a Citizens Forum in Ilorin on Thursday to mark the end of the National Good Governance Tour in Kwara State, the minister said to address the security challenges, there was the need for collaborative efforts.

He urged traditional rulers to ensure the safety of lives and property in their areas.

Maku said, “No development can take place in atmosphere of insecurity. That is why I’m worried about the North because we are far behind.

“We need to work harder for the security of lives and property in the country. If we do not to this, we will not be able to achieve the objectives of accelerated development.

“We therefore solicit the cooperation of traditional rulers working with local government chairmen and the communities under the leadership of the governor to secure every state.

“The challenges we face in the North are challenges that can only be solved in a cooperative approach and this is the what the Federal Government is doing with the governors.”

The minister lamented that corruption had permeated all segments of the Nigerian system, calling for a national reorientation.

He regretted that many public officials were under intense pressure from their communities to splash cash, saying this had contributed to corrupt practices in the country.

Maku said, “In the country we have a major issue with proper management of resources. That issue cuts a across all sectors, even the private sector. Corruption is something that the country must defeat because so long as resources are not properly utilised, we cannot realise the objectives of government’s investments.”

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed said insecurity was not peculiar to Nigeria.

However, he said the country must surmount its security challenges. Ahmed identified poverty and corruption as the major challenges confronting the country.

The governor said, “We should know that we have a common enemy and they are poverty and corruption. We must put our hands together and fight them.

“When we talk of corruption, people keep looking at those in government, governors, commissioners, ministers.”

True talk, but people will never want to accept that fact, what am quite sure the minister means is that the citizenry is needed to give information to the security forces for them to be Able to deliver optimally.

maku is a useless man. he was asked during fuel subsidy how he lead a protest against removal of fuel subsidy in 1986 as a students'only to come back to champion it as a minister and he said, he was bought then. such a useless brain lacks the moral standard to speak for us.
he is just there to make more money because tomorrow, he will say jonathan also bought him.

The Minister of information has not said anything new to all of us. It's common knowledge globally that policing is a collective effort. Our problem in this country is that we are so disoriented and disenchanted with the system that we fail to acknowledge the citizens role in Governance.
An average Nigerian will like to see asphalted roads across his territory but wouldn't bother paying any form of tax or toll.
An average Nigerian will like to have 24 hrs power supply and pay little or nothing in return.
An average Nigerian will like to have proper and qualitative health care without paying the right bills. Ironically, they will cough out x10 for that elsewhere.
An average Nigerian will like security but will be the last person to report anything suspicious to the police

You are the one who is useless, m.oronic, imbecilic and dumb. After all the fine arguments in support of subsidy removal, you still wallow in the bliss that ignorance offers you.
From all that is happening in the system, you should have by now come to terms with the need for subsidy to go.

BTW, I followed the subsidy saga very well. At no time did Maku say he was bought. In response to his alleged opposition to subsidy as a students Union leader, Maku clearly said that there were facts not available to him as a student that are now available to him as an adult and Minister. He also added that the circumstances surrounding his decisions then differ to a large extent from the prevailing circumstance now. It is only a foolish person that will stick to a particular decision and resist change after over 20 years.

What is poor about the speech? The minister went to Ilorin and solicited the assistance of Northern leaders help fight security.
He urged community leaders to expose criminals in their midst. Instead of you to commend the Minister for telling his fellow Northerners the truth, you resort to abuse and silly comments.

definately FG alone can not solve this problem. community leaders and state government should help in this fight to eradicate this problem. we can all live in peace in this country and no one is a slave to another. Both the southerners and westerners are also born to rule

Am telling you a very commendable step,at least some northern leaders like Maku are soliciting the support of their fellow northern leaders to encourage their people and indigenes to be giving useful information to the security agencies to enable them combat these crimes against humanity in the north optimally.

Insecurity vs security begins with all of us at the grassroot level. If we all can promptly report any suspicious movement, faces or happenings around us to the security agencies, I believe it would be a bold step towards effective solution to the problems. In Nigeria, You would always see people standing by, watching as onlookers while someone is being attacked by armed robbers. You see people gathering to feed their eyes after a bomb blast, without making calls towards the rescue of affected victims.

Secondly, greed and lack of contentment also breed insecurity. By the time someone is envying his rich neighbor and is desirous of making quick money, he wouldn't mind doing all sorts of evil to achieve his desires, including armed robbery, kidnapping, "boko-haraming", etc.

We really have to re-orientate ourselves.

Joeadamu86: what has ur statement have to do with the topic at hand?do you have a problem with Maku?we are talking abt how everybody will contribute in making our dear country secured not character assassination.

everybody is no one's name. take a trip to the history of countries where citizens work hand in globe with govt in solving problems and u will agree with me that JUSTICE is a pre-requisite.
what is the role of govt and who are the govt? in a country where a few people share the treasures. a family spends N1B of tax payers'money eating alone while over 75% go to bed hungry and u want them to work with govt? it is obvious nigeria has gone beyond that. all we should be praying for is anything that will crack the undemocratic democracy we have so that we can start afresh. do not forget, you maku and his likes have nothing to loose in all these killings. our first lady is in far away germany and all their children are in secured places schooling and doing their normal business. the problems we have in nigeria even the bombs are political hence there is a need for the politicians to agree on how to sort these things out. bombs and ammunitions come in through our borders yet fairly used cloths can't come in. we can bring in rice. how long are u going to be deceived. if you have access to bombs, try and kill one gov or any of their children and the next day, bombing will become history in nigeria. the names u will call me here do not change a thing but the attitude of govt towards bombing says it all. jonathan told us that chief Raymond Dokpesi who was not supporting him then was behind the 1st oct bombing but when Dokpesi finally joined his camp, the matter closed. did jonathan not tell us that he was not a general that nigerians must learn to live with bombing for the mean time and that we shld be praying? have u not been praying or is ur prayer not valid any more?
why are u not asking in all these killings, non of them has his children involved? senator Ndume who was arrested with proves of links to boko haram, did he not travel for hajj? was abu qaqa not arrested in a gov's lodge?
u can believe what you want to or even go and fight boko haram urself like maku suggested and we will see. the real enemies are those u are calling rulers.

the bold part will be returned to the two things that brought u into life.
in a democratic setting, i have the right to say my views in the same ways maku did. if u think because u have access to internet, u can come here and insult ur parents, and stop me from saying my mind or even force me to accept ur compromised position, u have failed and the next time u will insult me here, it will not be as easy as u will think. i always say my mind so say urs and NEVER u insult me again.
