People displaced by flood in Kogi State in their hundreds yesterday protested alleged government poor handling of relief materials and fund donated to them.
The protesters who are from Adakolo St. Luke Primary School relief camp took to the streets of Lokoja at about 8.00 am with placards singing “we victims are human beings.”
The victims spokesman, Aaron Haruna alleged that the Camp leader, Bashiru Dan Musa is conniving with some camp officials to divert relief materials donated by organisations as well as individuals for their upkeep.
Haruna also alleged that they have not been given food in the past one week, while bedding materials have not also been distributed to them. He urged the state government to give them themoney donated for their upkeep since they are no longer been catered for.
He said food items, cooking utensils, stoves, mattresses and drugs were part of the items being diverted by the camp officials.
The protest later terminated in front of the Government House where the camp leader, Bashir Dan Musa, and one Aaron Haruna were invited to a closed-door meeting with the Deputy Governor, Mr Yomi Awoniyi.
Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, Musa said the protestwas sparked off by a rumour making the rounds that Gov. Idris Wada had, at in a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, claimed that victims of the flood had been given money and materials to start life all over again.
The camp leader denied allegations of poor feeding at the camp but admitted that some of the donated relief materials were being sold in the open markets by people he accused of sabotaging the efforts of the government. Funny enough, most people appointed as leaders for these people are not affected in anyway by the flood. How do you expect them to have the same feelings as the victims themselves?
Acidiosis should be here to talk on this instead of bashing fashola on lagos.

Do you know how much the man paid to get to the position of Camp Leader? The flooding is not expected to continue indefinitely and he has to recover his money back and incur some profits too. If graduates are asked to pay large sums of Naira to secure entry-level positions in government parastatals, how much more do you think the man would have had to pay to be the CAMP LEADER? Please, blame him not! Let all castigation be directed to the ones who put a dubious individual in a delicate position!

Corruption has eaten deep into the nerves of our some people. Corruption is and will still remain the bane of Nigeria underdevelopment until drastic measures are taken. Imagine diverting funds and materials meant for Flood victims? It is nothing but a pisma disma.

What a shame; This was bound to happen, the temptation not to take something not belonging to one but is in ones possession takes real integrity.
The authorities should take steps to stop this rubbish.

Musa who is the camp leader accepted that materials meant for the victims are being sold in open market and still has the guts to blame sabotage. From the report, and his statement, the accusation is correct. And this guy is just one of them, probably from thesame community. Not NEMA or any special govt official. This is pure wickedness!!!
Who then can be trusted with this kind of assignment? FG released money to State government, state government released it faithfully to one Dan Musa and he embezzled it. The problem with Nigeria is Nigerians, not even government. Tomorrow, Dan Musa will open an account on Nairaland to blame govt.
