It is not very democratic in my opinion but it is important because in a nutshell. The people of the its vote for representatives for each of the states in the country. These representatives are free to cast their own vote based on opinion, but usually favour one particular party. The citizen vote is what`s called the “popular vote”. Example : 130-119 of the popular votes. Example: 27-28 of the electoral votes. Since the party with the 28 electoral votes was 1 higher even though they lost in the citizen (popularity) vote. They won the election based on the electoral college
