With the number of graduates ending up in unskilled jobs, should people just learn a trade instead of
wasting time and money getting degrees they might never use?

Hand work is better in Nigeria, you are guaranteed a job.
Nevertheless university education is necessary.

globally university degrees doesnt make one rich but it does provide a platform for one to achiev whatever he desires in life. my opinion is that one need both university degree and vocational training (handwork) to survive the hash socioeconomic environment in the country.

Nothing stops one from combining both . . . In Nigeria the schools are on strike like all the time, so the student could use those idle time to learn some kinda trade or some handiwork . . . They will surely come handy in the future

Handi work is better, but some of us prefer going to school rather, cos we are scared of taking the risk, forgetting that most successful people are risk takers...

Depending on the field of activity in question. And the so-called vocational trades are not really generally well-remunerated, are they? My tailor (or fashion designer, if you will) makes money, but do tailors generally do so? My mechanic (or automobile technician) is good, and has been in the business for amlost 20 years, and I believe he earns a decent income, but how many of them do you see affording the cars they repair? my barber (or hair grooming specialist) rips me off at 400 bucks a cut, but I don't think that all barbers do that well. My plumber (or piping specialist) is very, very good, but despises plumbing and went to part-time university to get a degree (in agricultural engineering). I think that the vocational trades are not as well remunerated in Naija as they are abroad.

I think at this point, I'll say none of the above.

It's depends on where you live..

In the UK, University Degree is pretty useless now except you're a professional...

I don't know about Nigeria - however, judging from the way Nigerians brag about paper qualifications and the fake bigman mentality, University degree should be better in Nigeria...

Both are better, if you have the resources get the Uni degree, if you have the time, learn some handiwork, both are equally useful. Uni degree would give you an edge over other contemporaries who fall under the same field or line of business as regarding your chosen handiwork.

Education helps to enhance skill or training,it also add swagg somehow to your personality.

It all depends on the individual. Many of them are comfortable with the income they make. Some ain't and they tend to do better. Your barber can actually own 4 barbing salons if he chooses to. Its all about the entrepreneur spirit in the individual

I hate this kind of dumb comparison. None is better than the other. It's like a laptop, take away the keyboard and you definitely can not work alone with just the monitor or take away the monitor same thing happens you can't work alone with the keyboard. It is more of a symbiotic relationship.

Not everyone is supposed to learn a handiwork and leave the University degree aside, who will be the doctors, the engineers, the lawyers, the IT specialist e.t.c and not everyone is supposed to earn a degree compulsorily who will be the carpenter, the tailor, the roadside vulcanizer, the barber, the hairdresser e.t.c People have to provide for the needs of each other in order to sustain a continued existence in our world. Can a barber do the work of a doctor? Or an engineer do the job of a tailor?
While some can actually do both if they have the opportunity.

So please stop this unnecessary comparison, please.
