VICTIMS of the 2015 governorship race in Akwa Ibom State have started emerging as the intrigues for the top political seat thicken. First major victim is Bishop Samuel Akpan, a hitherto close ally of Governor Godswill Akpabio.

Akpan was the leader of the major team that prosecuted the Akpabio’s governorship campaign in 2007. But in a most shocking move, he was removed as the Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. And in a recent election into state and ward offices of the party, all his loyalists “failed” to make it for a second term. Nobody knows Akpan’s sin for sure.

The interpretation is that he may be planning to fly high in 2015 and this harsh punishment is aimed at clipping his wings far ahead the contest.

Next big victim is the immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Nsima Ekere, who suddenly resigned from office last Tuesday in a country where political office holders are not known for such self-censorship. Here, every public officer sticks to his or her seat even against the strong tide of public opinion. The Guardian gathered that Ekere was forced to resign because the frosty relation between him and his boss had deteriorated irretrievably. In fact the state House of Assembly had perfected plans to commence impeachment proceedings against Ekere and his resignation was only to pre-empt the implementation of that diabolic plot that was hatched and delivered to the legislature by the Executive.
