I see what pple put up on the web,i browse websites like iMeem and Youtube and all i can think about is how (or when) im going to learn how to code in Vbasic,Perl,Apache ete.So how do i start? im doing Computer Science at the moment and guys,is any thing duller than this rite now? thanks . Gabriel

You first need to decide what programming/scripting language you want to program in. is it ASP.NEt, PHP, C++, VBScript, Actionscript, JAVA, etc. After that, stick to it, and as the prvious poster said READ READ and PRACTISE x10.

You would be glad to read that the internet is the best invention after bread and butter, hence access to learning tutorials both in video and text form is available at your disposal.

Not forcing ASP.NEt on you, but Microsoft has been generous enough to provide Visual studio for free and the ASP.Net website also has many video tutorials on how to build website from beginners to advance users.

I am not forgetting that access to the internet is a big issue in Nigeria, but strive hard and not loose hope.

Infact, instead of attending school to learn how to become a great web developer, you are better off using that money to buy books and a computer to learn with. You may not even need to get internet at first but with the right software on your machine, read and practise. perfect what you learn and then after about a year of just meditating on web development, you will notice that you are even better than many who went to school for it.

dont just use the design mode learn to hand code also it will build ur confidence.,
so get dreaweaver and the necessary tutorial and first start with simple website before thiniking of adding data to it.

As the rest of the posters have said. READ READ and PRACTICE. I am a software engineer, and I never took a class in Web programming, I just picked up a book and studied.  Learn Basic HTML and javascript, then once you are comfotable move on to ASP, ASP.net, PHP, C++, Java. etc,  Pick one of these languages and master it. 1. No computer school can make u a good programmer

2. It has to be ur own very keen interest which u have for programming and u sound like you have that Interest

3. I suggest you go for PhP, its very easy to learn and can handle all the functionailties that that Java and Co can do.

Very good advice from other posters. It is going to take a lot of practice and time to get proficient at it. There are so many tutorials out there, just determine what you would like to develop in and go with it. This is one field where you do NOT have to have a degree in ti to be proficient at it. However, you do have to love development and be ready to invest a lot of time in it. It will pay off in the end. Even wehn you start doing it professionally, you will have to keep learning. Because things are changing quickly. As someone that has been developing webapps for over 8 years, I am am still reading articles, books, etc. So that I can stay on top of the technology. You can go as far as you want to.

With any programming language, the first thing that you have to learn is the syntax. The syntax would be equivalent to learning the rules of grammar before writing an essay. Syntax is actually the easy part but having a good foundation in it can save you a lot of debugging time down the road. The next thing to learn will be design and this is what set programmers apart because you're only limited to your imagination. There are books and tutorials out there that teach you the basics but you will eventually have to be able to string the basics together to come up with your own unique solution.

I agree with what some people said already about school not making you a better programmer. All school does is to teach you the basics/fundamentals and it's up to you to become proficient at it.

I went the school route but still have to resort to books or the internet whenever I come across something that puzzles me. If you plan on working in a technology related field, learning will always be ongoing. Goodluck!!

First things first you do need a computer at home because you definitely have to practice then you need to find out which programming language suits your fantasy because trust me if you are not into it you would get tired somewhere along the line when those errors become too much to compile when that code seems to long to compile when that class file wont load and things just start going wrong so you do have to have passion for the programming and another thing dont try to learn too many programs trust me its not a good way to learn try and specialise in one or tow and make sure you are really good at it you might need to buy and borrow books though and it will also be good to have a friend that can teach you a thing or two
