Igbo Language, Going Goin....soon Gone! by Nobody: 10:51am On Nov 25, 2012
Today the FIDES are reporting that according to the UN the IGBO language will exist atleast 13 years to come, "there is no doubt that by the year 2025 the IGBO language will diminish to the highest level". Those words from the UN are experimentally true. Am so freaked out by all these allegations and assumptions about our language. An IGBO girl will tell you with pride "pls I dnt understand Igbo o, we stay at lagos but I can understand yoruba and English", Imagine! Pita Ejiofor, chairman for the 'suba igbo' group said"in the country there's no doubt the IGBO's derive joy in speaking foreign language. Go to UNIZIK and see how our girls destroy our language in the name of English and forming.
People worked so hard for this: ZIK, OJUKWU atleast is enough to show that our language is important, its our identity. ZIK once said "shine d light and d people will find their way". Let's not fall im hand. Let's arise ndi IGBO for our rights and identity.
N:B if u have IGBO identity, u must post with an IGBO accent atleast.

i seriously disagree with you guys on the fate of igbo language. I have stayed at different cities and have studied with those from other tribes, so i can tell you that igbo language is not going out anytime soon ! I don't quite get this paranoia on igbo language, you can imagine one dude who was aspiring to become the governor of my state ( Anambra), when asked what he's going to do about the educational sector , lamented about people not speaking the language and said he's going to make igbo language mandatory in all the tertiary institutions in anambra! To me, that's the height of the paranoia. The guy didn't talk about improving the educational sector but on how he's going to make people speak igbo the more. I studied in onitsha till WASSCE level, so i know that most persons(especially guys) who schooled there struggle when it comes to fluently speaking english language because they are so used to speaking only igbo language. Most times when someone tries to communicate in english, he'll be called an 'okachamara' and asked 'obu na-igaghi asu ala nna gi?'. i am presently in uniben but whenever i travel back to the east, i have to forget all my grammar, cos when i travel back, na igbo things. Even at school, i have noticed that igbos are the ones that love speaking their language the most.

a very good example is this nairaland. Just try to compare the stuffs written in igbo language and those written in yoruba,e.t.c. Compare our igbo kwenu thread with those of yoruba, hausa, bini, etc and you'll get the picture. But let's snap out of this paranoia

Who speaks anything but Igbo in the villages. If anything Igbo will die out of Igboland but never in. Will people start greeting their elders with hello? No, neither will people speak phone in village meetings. This is just an issue of Igbo kids out of Igboland assimilating into their environment.

I think the threat is bigger abroad than it is at home. Though I have met Igbos born and bread in the East and don't speak a word of it.

For us diaspora not born in Nigeria, the problem is that our parents raised us speaking English or other thinking it would be better, which is a shame because my Greek, Chinese, Bangladeshi, and Indian friends speak their languages perfectly. I've also noticed that a lot of Yorubas born here in the UK have a better understanding of their language and the Hausas speak theirs. There are groups of us taking the initiative to change this. There are Igbo cultural networks in the UK and mini language schools. I got some materials to help me at least understand it. I was raised with Igbo culture in the UK but it feels weird to know the culture and not fully understand the language.

I will make a very pointed note that the initiatives mentioned above have been taken by the youths (teens and 20s). Unfortunately, the older generation have decided that it is much more fun to use the lack of language understanding as good sport for their jokes rather than teaching us. I find it really disappointing and annoying. They should sort themselves out.

You also get mocked by other so called elders who also, like your parents, did not only neglect Igbo, but banned it and paraded their kids around as 'bẹkẹ'. The excuse is that they do not want the Igbo to interfere with their English comprehension, but these people would be the first to not only push, but header their children into a French, German, Mandarin, Cantonese, and even Hindi class if it was available.

ROFL. Tell me about it and I even know some families where the parents do the most ignorant stuff in terms of Igbo language. One of my friend told me his fathers gets angry at him anytime he speaks Igbo to him and the son is unable to reply back. Funny enough, he grew up with his parents speaking just English to him yet they expect him to magically speak the language like his superbrain or something. Move on to my sister's bestfriend, her husband bought books for his children to use to learn Igbo. Mind you him and his wife are both Igbo, they both from Abia state so there isn't any dialect clashes and they do not speak Igbo to their children. They rather spend money on irrelevant books to teach the language than actually opening their mouth and speak the language to their children. SMH.

My mum bought me a book as well! I told her to just speak to me in the language but she doesn't really have the patience. If the children you are talking about are young it would be so easy to just speak to them in Igbo! My bf's brother and his wife are Norwegian and French respectively and they both speak to their children in their own language. The children are 10, 8, and 5 and speak and understand fluent English, Norwegian and French.

I think a lot of parents naively believe that the children will just pick up the language without ever being addressed in it! Such a shame.

u cnt be so good in Igbo if u dnt learn it orally. So, ur kind is almost everywia bt very rampant with Igbo parents. Tell them to speak Igbo language orally to u cos thats d only to b perfect.
Re: Igbo Language, Going Goin....soon Gone! by EzePromoe: 8:53pm On Feb 04, 2013
Who saying that kind of thing? Before that will happen, there will be nothing like Ijaw, Efik/Ibibio, Edo, Urhobo, all those minority languages in the North will be non-existant, and Yoruba will be maybe close to extinction if it's not in extinction.

What I see here is unnecessary generalisation. I was born in Lagos and my parents spoke to us in Igbo and we responded in English. It took us only 2 months holiday in the village to learn the Igbo we speak till date. I got more idea of the language from my peeps in P.H who speak it.
In P.H, Igbo is almost the second language there after the English/pidgin English spoken as a means of interaction inter-tribals.

So stop saying that kind of thing. Igbo language is not dying in the next 10,000 years. DAALU!
