Am more sadden by these irrelevant noise about sovereignty, nationality, state identity, flag flying and anthem singing ulabalu.
Of what relevance have these to the hungry, unemployed, illiterate and frustrated individuals on the street.
I feel this is a misplacement of priority.

How come it's only northerners (and the Olanlere guy) that are kicking against a federating unit expressing its individuality and ethnic-pride?

If you feel threatened by innocent expressions and symbols that define a people, then i think it says more about your true feelings (and fears maybe? undecided) about your 'strong' and 'united' one Nigeria; shouldn't you then be trying to find out why you feel so insecure about your 'one Nigeria' and look for ways to make your country a truly inclusive, united, and more importantly- safe country for all?

naptu2: Each state of the United States of America has its own flag, yet the US hasn't broken up.

The federating units of Nigeria have had their individual flags since 1960, yet Nigeria hasn't broken up. What are these people talking about? Do they know what federalism is about?
It shouldn't be whether or not it's done in the US. The point is, does the constitution have any provision for state flags and anthems? Mind you the US that you're citing, every state runs like a country. They control their resources unlike here in Nigeria.

In fact, there's a law in Nigeria that currently permits state flags and specifies how they should be flown. That's what some reps are currently trying to amend. I just gave the US example to show that it's not strange in a federal system.

Law coming up.

Thank you. There is no need to amend the law at this time.

johnie: The laws of the federation recognises that states could have their own flags:

Flags And Coat Of Arms Act, Chapter 148, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990

Section 4

(1) Subject to the provisions of this section, if in any public place in Nigeria the National Flag is to be exhibited or flown for any purpose, it shall not be exhibited with or be flown on the same staff or cross bar with the flag of any State, or the flag of any Commonwealth or foreign country; and the National Flag or any other flag when exhibited or flown shall not appear in a defaced or tattered condition; but the National Flag shall not be deemed to be defaced by reason only of the fact that it is embodied in or forms part of a State flag.

(2) Where the flag of any State is flown in the State to which it relates or elsewhere than in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, it shall not be necessary for the National Flag to be flown at the same time; but if the flag of a State and the National Flag are to be flown at the same time in a public place in that State or elsewhere in Nigeria, the National Flag of at least the same size as the State flag shall fly above that of any State flag.

Chronic incompetent goons parading themselves as reps,a true federalism gives freedom to states to have their coat of arms, anthems and flags if they wish for any and that's how federalism is practice the world over.
Those idi:ots runs our nation like a communist community yet refers to nation as a federal republic, they should be send back to secondary schools to study the basic elementary of govt.
Regions had their flags and coat of arms in the 60s and states since mid 90s,it has absolutely nothing to do with national unity or national disintegration.
They wasted hours arguing about flags and anthems while there more pressing issues threatening our existence begging for attention, besotted goons.

The reaction to this matter conclusively confirms the fact that the National Assembly is full of certificated and functional illiterates.

naptu2: This is not even a recent development. Before 1960 each region had its regional flag. The regions also had their regional flags between 1960-1966. Each state had its state flag between 1967-1970 and many states have had their flags, coat of arms and anthem since then. It's a sign of federalism (Nigeria is a federal republic).

The practice is found in other federations across the world and those federations have not broken up. What's all the hullabaloo about?
we are not yet into federalism...as long as we remain in this 'false federalism' no state should form such divisive identities.

They are all political comedians,coat- of -arms,flags. is this the main Nigeria problem? When we have the highest rate of youth unemployment plauging the nation,Universities producing graduates without any plan or hope of finding a jobs.
I am convinced they have lost touch with their electorate or constituencies no plans or recommendation on best way to solving this problem.Right now the people we all gave our mandate are feltching an ant infested wood, what will they get------------SOON !
