The bombings and killings in northern Nigeria has a lot of similarity with the bombings and killings in some part of Pakistan.
1) both are perpetrated by Islamist(muslim terrorists)
2) both have political under-tone. The Talibans are fighting for control of certain parts of Pakistan, while boko haram is fighting for control of some parts of northern Nigeria.
3) both enjoy support of locals, mostly out of religuous solidarity
4) the perpetrators on both sides look forward to a heavenly reward of 72 virgins after death
5) both deploy suicide bombing tactics with ease
6) both operate in areas dominated by certain denomination of muslims(fulani-muslim dominated area in Nigeria).
Therefore, in the face of these obvious similarities, I dare to say that the bombing and killings in some parts of northern Nigeria will stop when that in Pakistan stops.
Sorry for people living in those areas, NO END IN SIGHT

When will Jonathan do the right thing and put an end to this mess.

It took Yaradua less than 18 months to end the militant issue.

When will Jonathan do the right thing?

Don't be demonizing the Fulanis. I grew up being takeb care of by a Fulani maid. I know all about their culture and people.

You will be surprised how many Fulanis are idol worshipers and not Muslims or Christians. Don't demonize people.

Ask GEJ when he is going to be serious about fighting corruption and ending the religious crisis in the North.

Ask him when he will stop the kidnapping of people for money in the east!!! Ask your pay master!

This is a case of national security no longer politics!

Some people will never appreciate this in their devotion to individuals above Nation. Look, half of the Nigeria population could die because of the ineptitude of GEJ. Yet you will still see many saying Jonathan is doing a "fantastic job". That is how mentally sick, bigoted and biased many Nigerians are currently.

...Nigeria has had a long history of ethnic and religious riots. These riots which are always targeted at people of opposite faith and ethnic lines have lead to loss of valuable lives and properties, many have been rendered homeless and places of worship have been burnt. Religious riots inthe northern city of Kano in December 1980 lead to the death of some 4000 persons, in 1982, another religious riot was recorded in Kano where Moslem students set fire to several churches in protest of sitting of a Christian church close to a mosque. Another riot broke out in 1992, in which about 200 lives were lost in…In May 2000; carnage broke out in Kaduna again which led to the death of about 100 people. The religious riot of October 2001 came a day after Muslim fundamentalists clashed with police during a street protest against the US led airstrikes on Afghanistan; hundreds of lives were lost in this riot. Another bloody riot was recorded in Kaduna in November 2002 were more than 30000 people were displaced during four days of a bloody genocide. In 2004 in Kano, about 30 people were killed in two days of religious violence, sparked off by a Muslim protest demonstration against a massacre committed by Christians. On February 23, 2006 At least 20 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in the south-eastern Nigerian city of Onitsha by Christians taking revenge for the killing of Christians in northern Nigeria. One of the bloodiest violence was recorded in Jos city in January 2010. Jos before then was regarded as one of the most peaceful places in Nigeria and a haven for foreign tourists, Muslim youths set a church filled with worshipers ablaze starting a riot that killed many and wounded more than 300 others, about 5000 people lost their homes in the very bloody riot. Another blood bath was recorded in December of that same year in Joswhich led to loss of valuable lives and property. The latest in the spate of this senseless killings is the recent electoral violence in some states in the north, many have lost their lives, student alike. Dude admit it, GEJ's incompetence is the reason Boko Haram grew in to a monster!!

Under OBJ, they were silenced. So silenced that they started pushing for sharia state democratically. But GEJ came and just allowed the problem to grow.

No article can tell me about what people experienced in Nigeria. You can try to pull all the shiit you want but the truth is, Boko Haram grew into a monster under GEJ!

When Buhari, religious crisis ensued in the North and he put an end to it in a operation!

PDP, the party of your pay master is behind this evil deed!

...In a similar vein series of religious crises were brewed in various cities during the 1980s and 1990s, especially in the northern states. Such sectarian crises were experience in Kano (1980, 1982, and 1991), Katsina (1991), Kaduna (1987, 1988 and 1992), Maiduguri (1982), Yola (1984), Bauchi (1991), Zaria (1992), Zango Kataf (1992), Funtua (1993), and Potiskum (1994). These crises, although religious in their connotation, had a tinge of ethnic confrontation in them...
The lives lost to such sectarian clashes between 1980 and 1994 were well over 10,000, and the wanton destruction of property was massive...

The December 1980 Kano Riot, because of its bloody nature and level of destruction, has come to be referred to as the first religious and bloody riot in contemporary Nigeria. However, according to the report of the Tribunal of Enquiry set up after the 1980 riot, prior to the outbreak in Kano, there had been over thirty violent incidents of religious riots in the northern states. But these were nothing compared to the December 1980 event...
The burning of Christian Churches in October 1982 is an example of an inter-religious crisis in Nigeria. This was the first open and violent religious conflict between Christians and Muslims. The action of the Muslims was probably fuelled by the laying of the foundation for a Christian Church near a mosque in Kano. As noted by Matthew Kukah, “although there was no evidence of hostility visibly shown by the visit of the Archibsihop to Kano, it was not accidental that the site where he laid the foundation stone for the building of the new Church became the scene of the violence that erupted in Kano six months after the visit. The violence was targeted at Christ Church in Fagge,Kano Metropolis”...

Obasanjo Regime 1999-2004....In January 2000, the Governor of Zamfara State Ahmed Yerima introduced the Sharia legal systemin his state. Since then, several Northern States have followed suit. In anycase, the seed of Bokoa Haram was sown and allowed to fester when Obj stood aside and what a section of the country promote Islamic Law (Sharia) over and above the secular constitution. Thousands died in the several rioting consequently. Below is a BBC News report in the Obj's era. Our memories might be short, but these riots were well documented. Obj's era withnessed far more religious related riots and killings than we have today. And he exacerbated the Niger Delta militancy by his abrasive method and his ceaselessness:

Police fire on Nigeria rioters

Fresh fighting has broken out in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna, after Monday's march by Christians protesting against the proposed introduction of Islamic law erupted into violence.

Dozens of bodies lay on the streets as police struggled to quell riots between Christians and Muslims, Reuters news agency reported.

The fighting is still spreading and we have called for reinforcement from neighbouring states
Police commander
"In the working class Sabo district, I saw police open fire indiscriminately on Muslim and Christian gangs but neither side appeared to retreat and corpses littered the streets," Reuters correspondent Felix Onuah said.

With police admitting the situation is desperate, latest reports say the Nigerian army has now deployed troops in Kaduna to assist them in controlling the violence.

Police said troops from the One Mechanised Division based in Kaduna had been sent to help restore calm as the state government ordered businesses and schools to shut.

Police say they picked up 25 bodies from the streets overnight.

Curfew

Last night the authorities imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew and warned that anybody found on the streets after dark would be "decisively dealt with".

But the curfew was ignored in parts of the city where Christian and Muslim gangs set up roadblocks.

Sharia is possible in some places in the north but Kaduna is a different ball game. It is too mixed
Human Rights Monitor spokesman Festus Okoye
Several buildings - including churches and at least one mosque - were seen burning in the town on Tuesday.

"I am appealing to the Christian and Muslim leaders to caution their followers and desist from the ongoing riots," Mr Shekari said in a broadcast on local television.

The violence came after thousands of Christians took to the streets protesting against the proposed introduction of Islamic law in the state of Kaduna.

Eyewitnesses said counter-chants by Muslims who support Sharia quickly degenerated into fighting.

Market ablaze

The main Kaduna market was set on fire and several cars bearing Islamic slogans were attacked.

Speaking from his office in Kaduna, Human Rights Monitor spokesman Festus Okoye said there had been massive destruction.

Despite the fears of Christians, the state governor has made no firm commitments to establish Sharia law in Kaduna, but has set up a committee to study how it might be implemented.

The Sharia issue has become increasingly divisive in Nigeria since the announcement last October by another state in the north, Zamfara, that it would introduce the code.

Sharia courts began operating in Zamfara last month.

Sensitive area

Although several rural states in northern Nigeria which are overwhelmingly Muslim have already announced their intention to introduce Sharia, Kaduna is a far more sensitive and politically important state.

Recent Sharia sentences in Zamfara
100 lashes for extra-marital sex
Motorbike taxi operators jailed for carrying women
Drinker lashed 80 times in public

The city of Kaduna is one of the largest in northern Nigeria, and the state has a substantial indigenous Christian population.

Muslims have repeatedly stressed that Sharia will not affect Christians. They say that the Nigerian press, mainly controlled by Christians from the south of Nigeria, has exaggerated the issue.

Religion: Nigeria's latest flashpoint

By News Online's Justin Pearce

Fighting between Christians and Muslims in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna is the latest challenge faced by the still-young democratic government in holding together one of Africa's most diverse countries.

Over the past year, fighting has set Yoruba against Hausa, Christian against Muslim, and communities against their neighbours throughout Africa's most populous country.

Usually, the conflict has been sparked by local rivalries, but fuelled by wider regional resentments - between the commercial hub of the south-west and the politically dominant north, or the plundered oil fields of the south-east.

Troubled transition
May 1999
Inter-communal fighting in Warri, Delta region
June 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Ibadan
July 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Sagamu
July 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Kano
Oct-Nov 1999
Hausa-Yoruba fighting in Lagos
Nov 1999
Police killed in Odi, Delta region
Even at local level, fighting takes on an ethnic or religious character, since Christianity and the Yoruba and Ibo people are associated with the south, and Islam and the Hausa people with the north.

Nigeria's existence as a country is purely the result of borders drawn by colonial pens.

Federal flaws

At independence, a federal constitution was adopted with a view to giving a greater degree of self-determination to Nigeria's regions.

But since democracy returned to Nigeria last year, and President Obasanjo adopted a less authoritarian style of government than his military predecessors, the shortcomings of the federal system have been all too obvious.

However one might redraw the internal boundaries, there will always be states in Nigeria that reflect something of the country's ethnic and religious diversity.

The most serious ethnic clashes in recent months have occurred in cities such as Lagos and Kano which have a large ethnically mixed population.

Religious mix

And so it is with religion. As part of the greater freedoms offered under the Obasanjo government, several Muslim-dominated states in the north have expressed interest in introducing Sharia, or Islamic law.

Muslim men at prayer Sharia arrived peacefully in the overwhelmingly Muslim Zamfara
The first state to implement Sharia was the overwhelmingly Muslim Zamfara, and there the transition passed off largely peacefully.

But in Kaduna - which has a substantial Christian minority - the mere mention of Sharia has sparked bloodshed and destruction.

Perhaps wisely, the Kaduna state authorities said they would start investigating ways in which Sharia could be introduced, rather than imposing it unilaterally.

Moreover, Nigerian Muslim leaders have said all along that Sharia will not affect the lives of the Christian minority in Sharia states.

But such assurances did little to ease the fears of Christians in Kaduna, who turned out in their thousands in an initially peaceful demonstration against the proposed introduction of Sharia.

Scuffles between demonstrators and Muslim bystanders soon grew into far more serious fighting and arson.

President's dilemma

The question now is how to contain the violence.

President Olesegun Obasanjo President Obasanjo: Sending in troops could prove disastrous
Police in Kaduna have appealed for reinforcements. Another more risky option would be the deployment of soldiers.

Calling out the army to quell civil unrest is bound to be politically dangerous in a country where soldiers have in the past needed little provocation in staging coups d'etat - and where the present government is trying to prove itself as the guarantor of democracy.

President Obasanjo, a born-again Christian, also has to tread carefully lest he be accused of anti-Muslim bias.

The last time the president called out the troops was in November, when soldiers went into the Niger Delta following the killing of a dozen policemen by local militant youths.

The result was yet more bloodshed, with soldiers blamed for hundreds of deaths, and President Obasanjo being forced to apologise.

Memories of that incident are certain to haunt the president as he ponders how to deal with this latest symptom of his country's difficult transition.

I posted the comments below sometime ago to bring to the consciousness of Nigerians the possible plans of the hausa-fulanis.

All these BLOOD SHED is another calculated attempt by the hausa-fulanis to bomb their way into Aso Rock. The hausa-fulanis cannot survive for one second outside of free govt money. The boko haram onslaught is calculated to create a fertile ground for a military COUP. We have passed this road before. The pogrom over what they called "Igbo coup", the civil war and other series of events that ended up giving power to the hausa-fulanis on a platter. Today, the police, army, customs and other armed forces are dominated by hausa-fulanis courtesy of the long period of military rule. Their domination of the armed forces resulted in INCOMPETENT armed forces. Can you imagine ordinary rats that call themselves boko haram having the audacity to attack a facilities in a military barracks? This is a big SHAME. Every Nigerian solder should bow his or her head in shame. Even an ordinary person without military training but who is security conscious would have done better.
But I have a message for the hausa-fulanis. You succeeded in KILLING all the way to the seat of power in years past but you can NEVER succeed this time. Any attempt to forcefully seize power at the centre will result in CATASTROPHIC civil war that will bring Nigeria to an end. No ethnic group has monopoly of violence. The scenerio that played out in Mali recently cannot work here. Nobody can bomb us to submission. Other ethnic groups cannot be slaves to hausa-fulanis.
The FOOLS on NL who still joke about the current onslaught by the hausa-fulanis should better wake-up and see the HAND WRITTING ON THE WALL. This is not about Jonathan's incompetence. This is about a tribe that believes it must be in power at ALL COST. This is about a tribe that believes it has MONOPOLY of violence. We all saw what played out in Mali. The democratically elected govt was overthrown in a coup by officers who believed the president wasn't doing much to stop islamic militants in the north of Mali (the SAME WAY SOME BELIEVE JONATHAN HASN'T DONE ENOUGH TO STOP BOKO HARAM). What happened after the coup? The same coup plotters who removed the sitting president could not stop the Islamic militants either. In fact under their watch, the militants effectively over-run and took COMPLETE control of Northern Mali. This is why I said, this onslaught by Boko haram is not about incompetence of GEJ. What really can GEJ do? GEJ can only work with the tools he has on ground, which is the INCOMPETENT armed forces, populated by hausa-fulanis, many of whom are sympathetic to boko haram political agenda.

Re: When Will The Bombings And Killings In Some Parts Of Northern Nigeria Stop? by Nobody: 6:08pm On Dec 24, 2012
The hausa-fulanis hope that killing and bombing to death of innocent people on a daily basis will continue to lead to public outcry like we see on the streets today and on the social media. Then they will capitalise on such outcry to strike a COUP. Most likely, they'll carry out the coup in the background and present us with a STOOGE as head of state and replace the 36 state governors with loyalists. The STOOGE may be another person from the Niger delta or someone from the middle belt to DOUSE TENSION. After some time and once PUBLIC ANGER DIES DOWN, the face of REAL coup plotters(the hausa-fulani solder) will now emerge, seize power and replace the 36 state governors with another set of loyalists but this time mostly one-sided in favour of hausa-fulanis. I'm saying this because we have passed this road before. Some persons may think I'm paranoid but this recently happened in Mali. All the hausa-fulani intends to do is to cut and paste what happened in Mali with little modifications to DOUSE public tension, like I stated above. Part of the grouse of hausa-fulanis with GEJ is that apart from not being a hausa-fulani, they had no hand is his ascent to the number one seat. Since after the civil war, the hausa-fulanis have had to decide for the whole nation who should be the president or head of state at any time, irrespective of whether the person is hausa-fulani or not. Look back in history and CONFIRM this trend. But for the first time in decades the BORN-TO-RULE people have no hand in how a president emerged. The last time this happened in 1966, the country ended up in a civil war, which the hausa-fulanis didn't mind provided it gets them back to power directly or indirectly. The events of 1966 is playing out again, unfolding before our very eyes. The events that happened recently in Mali is playing out in Nigeria. But ONE IMPORTANT message I learnt from the Mali experience and which the rest of Nigeria should take NOTE is that before the Mali coup, some Malians taught the islamic onslaught in the north of their country was because of the 'incompetence or weakness' of the president at that time, LIKEWISE some Nigerians think that the current boko haram/hausa-fulani onslaught is because of 'incompetence or weakness' of GEJ. But after the coup in Mali, the islamic militants effectively COMPLETED their onslaught and took FULL CONTROL of northern Mali, thereby CONFIRMING that the inability to crush the ISLAMIC militants was no fault of the former president but simply due to lack of capacity by the Malian military to deal with the situation.
