Sen was pushed to death by a woman
who "hated Muslims", as anti-Muslim
bigotry in the US sinks to violent new
depths.

On the evening of December 27, an
Indian immigrant to America named
Sunando Sen was pushed by a stranger
onto the subway tracks in New York City
and struck and killed by an oncoming
train. Sen had called New York home for
years, and after years of hard work and
struggle had recently managed to
achieve his lifelong goal of opening a
small business of his own, a copy shop in Upper Manhattan.
His roommate, MD Khan expressed
shock at the death of his friend, a soft
spoken man who liked to stay up late
watching comedy shows and listening to
music: "He was so nice, gentle and
quiet… It's broken my heart."
The following day, the NYPD announced
the arrest of Erika Menendez, a 31-year-
old woman who had been spotted on
security footage fleeing the scene after
Sen had been pushed. Upon being
detained and taken to a 112th Precinct
police station for questioning, Menendez confessed to Sen's murder and revealed as her motivation a desire to commit violence against Muslims. As she told detectives: "I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims… Ever since 2001 when they put down the Twin Towers, I've been beating them up."
Sunando Sen was not a Muslim, but as a
brown-skinned foreigner living in the
United States, he was targeted and
killed in an act of hate which is the by-
product of an ongoing campaign of
bigotry and demonisation against
Muslims living in America. Muslim-Americans, as well as Hindus, Sikhs and others who purportedly "look Muslim" have been humiliated, assaulted and in many cases murdered by individuals often galvanised to violence by politicians and media figures who have enthusiastically engaged in public hatemongering against the Muslim
community in the country. Anti-Muslim violence increases
The 9/11 attacks precipitated a surge in
hate crimes, but even as the events
themselves recede further into history,
the level of hatred and violence directed at Muslim communities is paradoxically increasing. Within the past month, in New York alone, police have suspected racial hatred as being the motive behind several crimes. This includes a string of murders specifically targeting Middle Eastern storekeepers in Brooklyn, the last of whom, a 78-year old Iranian immigrant named Rahmatollah Vahidipour, was shot
to death while closing his boutique and
whose lifeless body was then dragged to a backroom and covered over with
merchandise from his store. Within the same week as Vahidipour's murder another Muslim man was viciously beaten by two men who preceded their attack by asking him whether he was "a Hindu or a Muslim",while another man was stabbed several times outside of a mosque in a random attack by an assailant who screamed " I'm going to kill you Muslim", while repeatedly plunging a knife into his victims' body. Far from being aberrations, these
incidents are in line with national
statistics which show anti-Muslim violence in America nearing record
highs, a trend which comes in tandem
with highly public campaigns against
mosque construction as well as fear-
mongering by politicians and media
figures regarding alleged plots by
Muslim-Americans to override the
constitution and impose Islamic law on
the country. The US election cycle also saw Muslims used as convenient targets for politicians seeking office, with one example being incumbent Illinois House of Representatives Republican Joe Walsh
who told a cheering crowd at a campaign rally that "Muslims are here trying to kill Americans everyday", before making a baseless and highly incendiary claim that radical Islam had "infiltrated" the Chicago suburbs and that Muslims there were planning an attack that would "make 9/11 look like child's play". While working the crowd into hysterics was a convenient campaign strategy for Walsh, just days later the Muslim community experienced the consequences of his rhetoric. A man opened fire on an Illinois mosque while it was packed with hundreds of congregants for Ramadan. The next day, another mosque was hit with an acid bomb thrown at a window while worshippers had gathered for night services. Despite these attacks against Illinois Muslims in the wake of his statements, Walsh steadfastly refused to apologise for his rhetoric demonising the Muslim- Americans and instead doubled-down on his blanket accusations against them, a reflection of the mainstream acceptability of anti-Muslim rhetoric by political figures in the US today. Indeed the use of Muslims as a punching bag by opportunistic politicians seeking a minority group to scapegoat has become a regular feature of American political life which shows no signs of abating, despite the "trickle-down" effect by which this bigotry is now manifesting itself in real violence against innocent Muslim-Americans on a regular basis.

Behind this hatemongering lies a deep
cynicism, as leading anti-Muslim
politicians such as Newt Gingrich who
have warned of "stealth jihad" and other nefarious plots by Muslims in America were within recent years helping facilitate Sharia-compliant finance programmes in the country and who maintained notably cordial relations with prominent Muslim leaders. Political hatemongeringWith Muslim-bashing becoming politically fashionable in recent years, politicians such as Gingrich have markedly changed their tune and it has been to the detriment of Muslim-Americans, as well as to the general level of social cohesion and tolerance in the country. In addition to political hatemongering, the past several years have seen a highly organised and well-funded group of anti-Muslim activists who have been
sponsoring campaigns targeting Muslims across the country.
Leading figures in this movement such
as Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer
have led a crusade to vilify Muslims
throughout the country and to exclude
them from public life through campaigns of smears and hate-mongering which have cast Muslim-Americans as an insidious fifth column within the country. Their views have gotten considerable popular attention, and thanks to a documented network of funders and media associates they have managed to bring their message to people across the United States.
In the past few months, a major controversy erupted when Geller's anti-
Muslim organisation sponsored the placement of Islamophobic advertisements at major subway stations in New York as well as in other cities across the country. Some advertisements depicted pictures
of the 9/11 attacks with verses from the
Quran superimposed, while others calledMuslims "savages" and implored people to "fight Jihad". While the campaign has been challenged by many liberal commentators, including one infamous incident in which Egyptian-American activist Mona Eltahawy was arrested for attempting to cover a sign with pink spray paint, they continue to run across the country and to spread a message of indiscriminate, vitriolic hatred towards Muslim-Americans in a manner unlikely to be tolerated were it to pertain to any other minority group.
While correlation does not necessarily
imply causation, the question must be
asked - what effect do advertisements
such as these have on the psyches' of
people such as Erika Menendez? Was
Sunando Sen, a law-abiding, hardworking Immigrant who had given his life to achieving the American dream and who was pushed to his death by a woman who "hated Muslims" a direct victim of this campaign of bigotry? That he lost his life on the same subway system which for months has played host to hateful, incendiary advertisements such as Geller's is a tragic irony but is in many ways the natural result of a national culture of anti-Muslim bigotry that has become mainstream in both politics and
popular culture. The sad, inescapable truth is that Sen will likely not be the last victim of the accelerating phenomena of violence against Muslims in the United States - the only question today is how far into the darkness America must travel before
it decides to take a stand against it.

In Nigeria, Boko Haram has given Christians the opportunity to paint virtually all muslims as 5th columnists. It is easy from there to ignore shortcomings of the government because the alternative - a muslim president - will be "dangerous" to Christians. Muslims who are now placed in an awkward defensive position cannot also criticise the government strenuously!

I read an article on the dailies where the boss of immigration, one lady from the east said he refused to make public announcement of the recruitment exercise so as to prevent the recruitment of terrorists, and she made the statement in the presence of a Senate committee! No national outrage or rebuke, rather she is has refused to cancel a recruitment exercise that the minister supervising her agency has demanded she cancel over the lack of transparency etc my point is while in the US the Islamophobes instigate violence against muslim openly, the politicians in Nigeria apply subterfuge in increasingly sowing the seeds of division!

Such loving display from an adherent of the religion of love, no condemnation of the brutal murder of the innocents, nor condemnation for the deliberate exploitation of people's fears by US politician to fuel anti muslim murder which happens to even kill non muslim, no, your fears are that the truth has been told and you simply have to shut it up! Last Saturday, a deranged woman pushed a man in front of a subway train in New York andkilled him, explaining that she did it because of her anger with Muslims ever since 9/11. Immediately, leftist and Islamic-supremacist writers swung into action to blame the murder on what they called an “Islamophobia industry,” despite the killer’s obvious insanity and history of violent attacks on random people. The attacks revealed much about the use of the term “Islamophobia” as a propaganda tool designed to shut down thinking.

One written by Haroon Moghul “a Fellow at the New America Foundation and the Centeron National Security at Fordham Law” as well as “a doctoral candidate at Columbia University,” offered more intelligence than the usual character assassins and victim-mongers who spread the myth of “Islamophobia.” It alsoilluminated a great deal about the central premises of the real “Islamophobia industry” – the one that is dedicated to intimidating Americans into thinking that it’s “bigoted” to resist jihad and Islamic supremacism.
Moghul portrays the deranged killer Erika Menendez as holding Muslims “collectively responsible for the actions of a few,” which he and his ilk frequently complain is what “Islamophobes” supposedly do: blame all Muslims for the actions of a few “extremists.” There may be some nuts somewhere who do that, but actually people like Haroon Moghul (and a host of others in his camp) are the ones who constantly proclaim this, not counter-jihadists. Moghul and co. want you to believe that that is what counter-jihad analysts are doing when they note that jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to justify violence and supremacism. Actually, in doing that they are recognizing that there is a problem within Islamic doctrine, which Muslims could conceivably reform or reject outright, however unlikely it may be that large numbers will do either. They are not blaming all Muslims for 9/11 or any other act of jihad. But if they can convince you that counter-jihadists are indeed vilifying all Muslims, they will thereby discourage people from joining their ranks. Andthat is the goal.

Moghul complains that for “Islamophobes,” “allMuslims are on the hook for what some Muslims do, and must constantly distance themselves from other Muslims—as if the whole must bear responsibility for the acts and faults of individuals. How does that make any sense, except in a racialized and dehumanizing way?”

In reality, no Muslims are “on the hook for what some Muslims do.” But virtually every day, somewhere in the world, some Muslims harm and kill people and justify their actions with reference to Islamic texts and teachings. How are we to deal with this? Do those Muslims who operate mosques and Muslim schools in the West (and elsewhere) not have any responsibility at all to try to ensure that their pupils don’t become jihad terrorists?

Certainly non-Muslim states have felt a great responsibility to prevent jihad terror, and have thus showered money on Pakistan and other Muslim countries in a vain attempt to stop it, while spending yet more money on hearts-and-minds initiatives such as building schools in Afghanistan, etc. Whether or not these programs are wise, is it entirely up to non-Muslims to try to stop jihad terror, with its 20,000+ attacks since 9/11?

There is no program teaching against the “extremist” version of Islam in any mosque anywhere, despite the fact that converts to Islam seem peculiarly susceptible to this understanding of Islam (cf. John Walker Lindh, Adam Gadahn, Richard Reid, and on and on) and the universally held assumption that the vast majority of Muslims reject and abhor this version of Islam. Why isn’t there? And why is Haroon Moghul obfuscating this issue, instead of expatiating on how unjust it is for him to be “on the hook” for what some other Muslims do?
Moghul insists that “Islamophobes” give short shrift to the fact that peaceful Muslims have a different interpretation of the Qur’an from that of the violent ones. That may well be, althoughthe violent interpretations are far more mainstream than he lets on in any case, the existence of the peaceful interpretations doesn’t cancel out the existence of the violent ones, just as Hamas-linked CAIR’s ad campaign that tries to sell the idea that jihad is helping your sixth grader with her homeworkand playing hopscotch with her when she’s done doesn’t do anything to address the inconvenient fact that a significant number of Muslims believe it involves warfare against andsubjugation of infidels. The people who need tobe convinced — the Muslims who believe in violent jihad — aren’t being addressed.

The common claim that the “Islamophobes” endorse the view of Islam of the “extremists” and ignore “moderate” versions ignores the deep traditional roots that offensive jihad for the subjugation of infidels has in Islam. Those who hold to the “extremist” view are actually quite mainstream. Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), a pioneering historian and philosopher, was not an “extremist” by anyone’s account, and yet he wrote that “in the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and (the obligation to) convert everybody to Islam eitherby persuasion or by force.” In Islam, he added, the person in charge of religious affairs is concerned with “power politics,” because Islamis “under obligation to gain power over other nations.”
In modern times, Majid Khadduri, an Iraqi scholar of Islamic law, wrote this in his 1955 book War and Peace in the Law of Islam : “The Islamic state, whose principal function was to put God’s law into practice, sought to establish Islam as the dominant reigning ideology over the entire world….The jihad was therefore employed as an instrument for both the universalization of religion and the establishment of an imperial world state.” Was Khadduri, a scholar of international renown, an “Islamophobe” who was cravenly endorsing the “extremist” view of Islam in order to dehumanize Muslims? Come on.

But Moghul rejects any connection between theQur’an and violence, asking, “Imagine how we’d react to the proposition that reading the Bible explains George W.’s war against Iraq?” Well, if “George W.” had said that the Bible explained his war in Iraq, we would be remiss ifwe not only refused to look in the Bible to try tounderstand what George was up to, but vilified those who did look in it as haters of George. But that is the situation we are in today: Islamicjihadists explain and justify their actions with reference to the Qur’an, but those who look in the Qur’an and Islamic teaching to try to understand them, and who call for reform and reevaluation of the teachings they use to justify their actions, are vilified and demonized as “Islamophobes.”

Then when we look at the “moderate” Muslim establishment in the U.S., we see Muslim Brotherhood ties, open cheer-leading for the murderers of Hamas, and the like. It does not, to say the least, inspire confidence.

Haroon Moghul could have really struck a blow against any actual “Islamophobia,” i.e., the things that really make people dislike Islam: the bombings, the beheadings, the murders by Allahu-akbaring hordes. Instead, he is enabling them, by doing all he can to destroy their opposition.

Wow see adherents of the "religion of love" not even condemning violence that has led to the deaths of innocents rather they are justifying such acts! This is sickening!

What most people fails to see is the fact that religion fanatics can be from any religion.but for some people who decides to blame Islam for the works of some launatic ie Robert spencer who is not a scholar in the first place is irony.Nobody in his or her right sense will jsutify the killings of innocent people.so its not a matter of religion and islam should not be blamed either if some people are misinterpreting it to gain their selfish desire.

Right on the front page of The Punch of today is this story. No Christian seem to have read the paper today.
When a negative story about Islam is published by a community paper somewhere in Micronesia, it will be swiftly reported on NL
The simple formula Christians use seem to be like this = does it present Islam in good light? If yes, ignore it. If brought to your attention, dispute it. Does it portray Islam in bad light even if tangentially? If yes, try and get it on the FP
