I meant that govt should institutionalize it's present policy of providing soft loans to the airlines. The govt shouldn't pick winners and losers, ALL the private airlines should have equal access to the fund.

Certainly, the single-digit interest rate of the govt loan should be maintained. However, I agree that the ticket sales tax and other navigational fees should be slashed by at least 55%. The FG can make up the resulting revenue shortfall by creating an enabling environment for investors to set up commercial ventures within airport premises. The taxes collected from these commercial ventures should be sufficient to make up any revenue loss associated with the reduction of navigational and aircraft parking fees, and ticket sales tax.

This government can not do that, they are in it for their pockets.

I hope FG knows the plane will be delivered in 2016, going by the way aircraft manufacturers like Boeing & Airbus operates. The idea is good but FG should concentrate more on reviving dead industries to create employment. Lets become China through massive export. What is wrong with Goodluck Jonathan & his Governors

Okija_juju: .So the FG still hasnt learnt its lessons from Nigeria Airways and Air Nigeria Saga!!

BRING VIRGIN NIGERIA BACK!!!!!!

The government has no business buying planes... Airplanes are not cheap!! Airline tickets are not for the poor.. Open up the Nigerian market and regulate the activities of airlines.. The more airlines, the higher competition the lower the prices of tickets..

That would mean going groveling on their knees to Sir Richard Brandson

Billyonaire: Nice move. Time to make Nigeria the Aero Hub of Africa.

We are going to need to demolish and rebuild MMA and it has to have another run way!!

A small passenger jet that can carry 100 people will cost USDollars 200 million to acquire. 30 of those will cost USD6 billion = N900 billion Naira. Do tha math. Except maybe FG wants to acquire 1976 Russian made planes! If you have N900 billion you will be able to provide enough guarantee for private sector to revolutionalize rail transport in the country.

Well 777-200ER could carry around 300 people and its cost around $200m

The FG is constructing a new international terminal at MMA, which will be completed by the 1st quarter of 2015. Upon it's completion, the FG will concession the terminal to a private firm.
In addition, LASG is partnering with some private firms to build an International airport in the Lekki-Epe axis. The 1st phase is likely to be completed in 2014.

I think the 30 planes would be short-haul ones (B737s, Embraer jets) for domestic and continental operations.
