Sule, who attended a school in Lagos, was drinking from his plastic water bottle during lunch break when his friend Bassey joined him under their Mango tree hide out. Bassey brought out a bright red thermos flask from his new leather school bag and began to drink iced water. Sule, a complete Aje Paki gasped in astonishment. "Bassey! It is a miracle. The ice block is still blocked o! The heat no melt am down sef" Bassey let out a condescending laugh then said..."Sule, this is a Thermos flask. In fact my mum flew into the country yesterday from England via New York vis a vis Paris. She bought the flask in duty free". "Ah-ah, which country is duty free sef" asked Sule. Bassey spent a few minutes explaining duty free to Sule as a kind of Alaba market in the airport. "So where the aircon in the flask now? How e dey keep the ice block blocked?" asked Sule scrutinizing the flask intensely. "You are a bushman! There is no aircon inside. If you put cool things in they remain cold and if you put hot things in they remain hot " said Bassey. "Wondafoo, Oyinbo try o!" exclaimed Sule. "Since you are so fascinated by flasks, I will ask mum if you can have one of our old ones" promised Bassey. The next day Sule got his flask. On the third day when Bassey got to their spot under the Mango tree, Sule was waiting flask in hand. "You don't waste any time do you?" said Bassey. "Lai lai. I must to use things straight away" said Sule. "So what do you have in there?" asked Bassey. "Ah, the cold thing na iced water but the hot thing na hot eba and hot okro soup plus cow-leg" answered Sule. Bassey went into a coma straight away!! |
