For your info (I guess you didn't finish reading up on his career), the only reason he's "deep lying" these days is simply because of his age; he can no longer run as fast. He has always been an attacking midfielder even through his career at AC Milan. Unlike Xavi who we know for his defensive acumen. Maybe I should explain the term "deep lying" to you. It simply means though he's an attacking midfielder, he starts the attack from "deep". Not "deep" for a defensive reason. Simple.
