EXPERIENCES IN THE CHURCH/MOSQUE
New beliefs and attitudes. Shocked family. Amused friends.

Welcome to Christianity. The fire was burning in my soul. The zeal for the Lord was overflowing. I had an insatiable hunger to study the Word. The Word was my meal, my everything. I didn't become fanatic in the real sense of the word. I was just really happy that the Bible had begun to make some sense to me. I had never known that there was so much to learn from the Bible. I studied the New Testament a lot. The Book of Hebrews and Romans make excellent reading for New Believers (NLT and Amplified versions were my fav). I registered for baptismal classes and got baptized some four months later.

As a worker in church, I begun to get closer to most of the church personnel. There were Christians who lived what they preached and there were those who well... let's skip that part. I could ignore them now though. My salvation wasn't hinged on their lifestyle but Christ the Solid Rock.

But the more you study the Bible and Christ's teachings, the more you become aware of the filth called 'doctrines' that's prevalent in most churches today. I could never understand why people would call a fellow man 'DADDY GO'. This is in direct violation of Scripture, but people would find a way around it. I also didn't feel comfortable with the idea of praying down fire on my enemies. I disagreed with tithing and seed faith offerings. I rather put my money to better use by giving it to those in the church I was aware needed it. It's important to note that I didn't become a douchebag because of my 'increased' knowledge. I didn't go around telling people that paying tithes was wrong. I believed at that time, the 'Holy Spirit' would lead to the truth. I've since come to realize that what Christians call the HOLY SPIRIT is simply your conscience speaking to you. It's just you.

Two years later, I had finished my diploma. I applied to a school in India and got admission to study a degree in Information Technology. My faith was about to go through troubled waters...

Funny, i once went through a similar period such as this. Even though i consider myself a born again christian, i have come to realize that 95% of what you see and hear in the church today are a direct contravention of the gospel of Christ. I also agree that much of what "christians" today call the Holy Ghost is nothing but their conscience after eating a bowl of hot amala. Does the holy Spirit speak to us and direct us still? YES but He will NEVER do so outside the dictates of the bible.

Could not quote Frosbel's post but i wholeheartedly agree... the problem with Nigerian christianity is numerous but i will summarize into the following bullet points:

1. Force - The gospel is NOT by force. Christ did not bully, threaten and curse the disciples into following Him. This is a serious issue with strongly conservative parents.

2. Hypocrisy - It is not he who sings the loudest, prays the longest and carries the most tattered bible...

3. Convenience - Many are "christians" only because they think that is the only hope to a "breakthrough". Once they get their breakthrough they are out the door faster than when they came in.

4. Hate - I have only just begun to awaken to this fact... you will never win over an atheist by mocking and condemning them to hell with one side of your mouth... all that does is confirm to them why Christ cannot be the the same God of love, mercy and grace you preach to them with the other side of the mouth.
