Truth be told, I can't count the sleepless nights I've spent since I got into med school, thru my nysc, and the 2 yrs post-nysc since then. Honestly, I can't complain abt the pay. The least salary I've collected is over a hundred per mnth and that was way bak in 2008 as a house-officer. I've been on call thruout this week, and I'm exhausted but I can't imagine myself being any other thing than a doctor.
Give me 10 lives and I'l want to be a doctor in every single one of them. Noo regrets. I love being a doctor.

Am proud to be a medic & any day i will choose to be one.
though the profession is faced with so many challenges in Nigeria but it is still lucrative.
nothing can be compared to ability to help others get well & give them hope.

Pls wat do you mean by office politics?

Office Politics could mean any situation where you have to think twice before calling a spade a spade in the work place or where you have to toe a certain line because of popular opinion even though you know it is wrong but feel that to do or say the right thing may have adverse effects on your career so you remain mute against your conscience and better judgement as you don't want to be victimised by the majority for being different or saying the truth.

On another level, Office Politics as pertaining to the NHS (National Health Service) in the UK at times comes as a form of Racism as the following article by an Asian Doctor in the UK clearly shows.

Talk on Racism in the NHS by Dr Aneez Esmail to Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority 2000
When asked to speak about racism in the NHS I find it difficult to understand the organisation that I work in. I will explain why by describing two examples that impacted on me as a doctor working in the NHS.

This was confirmed to me in fact when I was doing a hospital job in Yorkshire. I got talking to the consultant one evening, when his guard was down probably, and I said to him Tell me how do you decide who you short-list for a job? and he said Oh its very simple Aneez he said I put all the foreign applications in one pile and all the English applications in another pile and I look at the English applications first and only if I do not find any suitable candidates I look at the list with the foreign names. He explained to me that I was only short-listed because I came to see him otherwise I would have been in the other pile. So it was as simple and as crude as that. This was in 1985.

I have to admit that to my shame I did not do anything about it and I just carried on as normal, sort of grinning and bearing it type approach. In the meantime most of the people that graduated with me had already left the country because they felt that they were not being recognised and thought that they would stand a better chance elsewhere and in fact they almost certainly did.

So the NHS lost. They trained all these doctors and they emigrated to America and Canada where they are all in quite senior positions now. They left because of the racism that operates in our system.

[quote author=Guddy]Have you guys considered other noble allied medical professions like Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmacy, physiotherapy, radiography, and others? I know of guys that took up these profession and are doing very well, when I mean very well, I mean VERY WELL especially in their private practice.
The medical profession is not all about doctors alone. [/quoteWe are duscussing Doctors here and nt other allied health workers(paramedics). You dont need to indirectly mention the age-long rivalry btw these allied wrkers and Doctors here. When we talk abt medical profession, one needs nt to possess the Sagacity of a Daniel or The wisdom of a Solomon to knw the profession we re talking abt.It is known all over the world.

You must have passion for whatever you choose to do. It is that passion that sees you through the challenges. I never wanted to be a doctor and didn't bother trying to become one.

Every field has its ups and downs. So don't listen to anybody coming her to deceive people about medicine. You can be a very rich and comfortable doctor, depending on how you play your cards. Same with engineering and other fields. Most of this people castigating medicine failed their second mbbs and were withdrawn, so they want to make people to end up like them. Some didn't get medicine during admission, so they dedicated their life to painting it black. Do not be deceived.

D_BestDoc: I've always been very passionate about studying medicine.couldnt think of some other career to venture into.Just had the inner conviction that i would be better at medicine than anything else.spent eight years after high school trying to get a place in a medical school.got it finally and have no regret whatsoever.it is not easy though, most times, you put in too much but get too little in return. But i will still go for it if asked to choose all over
D best doc, please you have a PM.

Idyllic: I am still a Medical student, but have been thinking of specializations. My issue is that, I don't want a specialization like Surgery where I will be too OCCUPIED, not having enough time for friends and family, I also don't want a too WEAK specialization like Radiology or Community Medicine where my brain may be slightly dormant. Please elders in the house, what are the Specializations a person who wants to have time for his family and at the same time want a Specialization that will CHALLENGE him i.e where his SUPERB BRAIN will be put to good use. Please experienced elders, comment. Few specializations I know are: Radiology, Anaethesia, Chemical Pathology, Community Health, Otorhinolaryngology, Haematology and Blood transfusion, Medicine (i.e Neurology, Cardiology, Nephrology, e.t.c), Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Surgery (i.e Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, General Surgery, Urology e.t.c). Please advise. Either you think what you have to say his important or not. Thanks in advance.
Go for Pathology or opthalmology. Pathology is not a "weak" specialty (pathology is the closest you can get to being like doctor House in the season movie called "House"wink and it has less stress, more free time and more brain work.

I'm really surprised that someone will ever work hard through medical school to become a Doctor just because he wants to make money. There must be a stronger motivating reason for one to become a Doctor and that for me cannot be money.

kristikat: I Do not know,
how do you feel about people who would rather trust traditional practices than western medical practices?
how do you feel about their naivety or faith in magical practices?
how do you feel about people who would rather die believing in magic than western medicine?
do you think their souls are purer for believing in such practices?
or do you think their ignorance and disbelief in western practices makes their souls less pure or even not evolved?

its a free world as far as i know.
