AT least a church was yesterday burnt down by rampaging youths in Kano who were alleged to have been sponsored by the state government.

But the government in a quick reaction denied knowledge of the arsionists, accusing political opponents of merely trying to drag its name into the mind.

Strong rumour has been going on, alleging that the state government was behind the dastardly act.

Debunking the claim Kano State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Haruna Isa Dederi, accused mischief makers of hiring the hoodlums, who perpetrated the nefarious act.

Addressing newsmen in Kano yesterday, the commissioner said those accusing the government of sponsoring the arsonists were doing so to cause disaffection among followers of different religons in the state.

Dederi clarified that the state govenrment earlier acquired the piece of land, which belonged to the police for the construction of a hospital.

He said the government had paid the necessary compensation to the police for the piece of land that had a church, mosque and other houses.

"There is no iota of truth that we are behind those who committed that action because it was some unlawful people who vow to painted this goverment black that carried out that action and we will not be detracted from improving on peoples lives through the construcytions of roads, hospitals and schools", said the commissioner.

He said the mosque and church came as an anex to the barreck and when it was acquired it was for everything that was there. I think that is why the owners of the mosque where not complaining.
