Ban Of Green Buses Temporarily Suspended By FCT by sammietos(m): 1:00am On Jan 17, 2013
The ban on the use of green mini-buses within Abuja has been suspended for three weeks by the FCT Administration.

The announcement was made by the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed after meeting with the stakeholders in the transport sector within the FCT on Wednesday.

Those at the meeting were officials of the Mini-Buses Union, FCT chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), FCT Police Commissioner and the Director, Department of State Security.

At the end of the meeting, the Minister set up a committee to fine-tune the implementation of the ban on the mini-buses.

The implementation committee is to be chaired by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Engr. Anthony Ozodinobi, while members are to be drawn from the FCT Chapters of the NLC/TUC respectively, the Police, VIO, FRSC, and Civil Society Organizations.

According to the Minister, the ban is for the good of all the residents of the FCT, hence there is no going back on the policy.

Other transportation related bans Senator Muhammed noted still remain so, while also declaring that adequate enforcement will be ensured.

Apart from the mini-buses, the FCT administration had banned Car mart, Car Wash and illegal Motor Parks scattered in and around the Federal Capital City.

What they should have done before is what they now want to do. It seems these pple derive a form of pleasure in seeing nigerians suffer before getting their acts together.

One major problem we have in this country is that many of our government agencies and officials jump to hasty decisions without taking time to simulate several alternatives possible to ensure things are done properly. The FCT government should have ensure that palliatives are put in place before marshaling the order on the ban of green buses within the city centre. When decisions are taken in the manner they just did, it is the masses that suffer it.

Just another example of a Bad and poorly thought out policy. The minister did not take time to analyse how it would affect commuters. He did not deem it fit to carry the unions along. No sensitization of the public. Only to set up a COMMITEE like his ? after he had seen the result of the draconian Ban.

The meaning of the headline, means the Ban of buses have been temporarily suspended which means buses,n cabs etc are allowed to operate @ d moment.

Meanwhile what the post meant was ban on buses, cabs will b permament.

If I may ask What is d purpose of using temporarily in d statement. Very poor journalism

Just another day in the hard life of the regular Nigerian in Abuja. The "modern city for the rich" where 90% of the populace are civil servants earning minimum wage. They can't afford good schools, accommodation and now transportation. At least the achievements of this FCT minister is to stop hot babes on the streets (interesting priorities or do i call it misplaced priorities) Unfortunately, he wasn't elected... He was appointed... What a big disappointment. You pay to park on the streets on a federal road constructed by tax payers money... very disappointing indeed

There is a need for us to be very objective about the policy. This policy was to be implemented in 2006, which was why the Abuja Leasing Company was setup with the procurement of the so-called "El-Rufai" buses. The essence was to reduce the vehicle density on Abuja roads, reduce the chaotic traffic situation in Wuse, Berger and other places CAUSED BY THESE SAME ARABA BUS DRIVERS, and promote a cleaner, saner traffic culture.

Given, the method of implementation was simply not the way to go about it, but this is a policy that has been long overdue. You need to see what these bus drivers do on the road. Cause accidents, cause traffic, and their tout mentality just creates problems.

In developed cities across the world, there is a much saner transportation system. When BRF banned the molues in Lagos, people screamed and abused him. Today is Lagos not the better for it?

Nigerians should learn to change with the times. We cannot allow the bus drivers turn Abuja into another pre-Fashola Lagos. The roads are clearer and cleaner, and when the rail project is completed, commuters will have another safe and fast means of transportation.

It shows that PDP govt is an anti-people govt- a party full of people who act before they think. Look at the subsidy removal in January last year and this again in January of a new year. In fact, PDP should forget Aso Rock in the next election.

I expected the FCT Minister to provide palliatives to reduce the effect of the ban before embarking on it. Palliatives like providing more luxirious buses (popularly known in Abuja as El-Rufai buses) and also, finish the light rail system they claim they are constructing. In fact, i'm not sure if they are sincere with the light rail system project because I haven't seen where such contruction is going on in Abuja. If it is true, I should have seen the tracks being laid from the satallite towns like Kubwa, Mararaba, Gwawalada (where most residents of the city reside), into the city centre. This PDP govt is a pasquinade and a failure!

No doubt Abuja would be a better place without these buses, but for the common man, what alternatives are put in place w.r.t the ban? take note, in Lagos, Fashola provided the BRT buses on the BRT lanes before reducing the input from the regular danfo and molue. As a matter of fact, most ex-molue drivers are now rehabilitated BRT bus drivers. In this instance, nothing was put in place by the FCT administration before such decisions were made. El Rufai attempted it (no doubt), but it fizzled out with his administration. Drive by at rush hour (Between 4 and 6 pm) and watch how people suffer waiting for transportation.
