Here is the deal. I do not like to have to pay off almost half of what I earn each week so the lady across from me can get a free check in the mail each month to pay her rent and bills. LMAO!!!! I don't know about you folks over there in the UK,  but here in America, many of us do not like watching people who can work and are healthy get free handouts at the expense of those who actually go out to work and pay their taxes,  LMAO!!

I actually prefer a state without a welfare safety net than one that offers "Free Money" to people who are undeserving at the expense of those who do not deserve to be ripped off for paying taxes. Welfare is good is well managed. I would go with the Nigerian model anyday than I would the current American welfare model and you can imagine how I cringe at the thought of Universal HealthCare which to me, is pushing the current welfare problems to mega proportions. Who gets to pay more to support it?? Those of us who work for a living. I don't mind working hard in my youth and saving up to take care of situation when I am older.

Not to sound like a M'uslim basher but the people who are most likely to be on welfare are Pakistanis and Somalis.Some of them are collecting-the Govt seems to allow them-for their multiple wives.

I read somewhere that 20% of M'uslim women in the capital are claiming one benefit or the other.

I don't know about you but I have watched the way people in Nigeria deal with saving up for retirement and I have to say that they do know how to better avoid situations such as the one you note up there. One has to save sensibly. You do not put 100% of your savings in one basket and expect it to be there when you are ready. You divvy your money out considering possible risk as you do.

No doubt, Welfare has its problems - some people just don't want to work - but I am sure everyone would rather there was a safety net than not unless you are mega-rich. That is the difference between cicilised and uncivilised society. Plus governments around the world are starting to force lazy people off their backside. I know that in Holland, the government actually gives you a job - and if you don't take it, they cut ya benefits. I think UK has started employing a similar scheme. I also know that Yankee is looking to do something similar in the near future.

For those in the USA any funds that tracks the S&P 500 index is great.
They are unmanaged funds that track the performance of 500 well known,solid companies like coca cola,general electric,walmart etc.
You don't have to deal with fund managers playing juju with buying and selling.
Since the stock market history,almost no single mutual fund has ever outdone the S&P 500 in any 10 year period so for long term investors like myself,that is a good option.
I'm too scared to venture back in stocks after I lost my meagre resources following Sept 11.
