KADUNA — Young officers from Nigerian Air Force School of Engineers, Aircraft Design Centre, Kaduna, yesterday, dazzled the Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Ita Okon Bassey-Ewa when they displayed to him an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAV, referred to as drone, which could fly non-stop for about four hours at 3000 feet. The drone was conceptualised, designed and built by them in Kaduna under the direct supervision of the Provost of the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, Institute of Technology, Prof. Emmanuel Ezugwu. According to officials of the institute, the drone’s empenage was about three metres while the wing span was about half a metre. The four officers, all Flight Lieutenants, said it was a three-year effort in collaboration with Cranfield University of United Kingdom with funds from the Federal Government. The officers who asked that all the credit for break through be given to the Commandant of the school and Chief of Air Staff pleaded that their names be not mentioned in the press. The school had earlier displayed a conceptualised model of an ab-initio training fighter aircraft known as Farawa (meaning “the beginning” in Hausa) for the Air Force just as it was trying to design a Nigerian-made Air Beattle, AB-18, for the Air Force. The four officers had bagged Masters degrees in various fields related to avionics from Cranfield University, after their first degrees from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. They told Vanguard: “We designed and built this UAV based on the pressing needs of our country today. The vehicle can be used in pipeline monitoring, border patrol, mapping and disaster monitoring. Other areas of use include maritime patrol, aerial surveillance and pest monitoring. “The vehicle can fly at 3000 feet, and remain airborne for four hours using petrol for now. The first one we built is called Amebo 1. The second one is Amebo 2 and is an improvement over the first. “If we keep getting the right support as we are getting now, we will accomplish our mission for the country.” In fact in the next five years, we may start building our own light aircraft for training new pilots”, the officers said. The Minister who was obviously amazed at the development was in Kaduna attending the National Stakeholders’ Workshop/Exhibition on National System of Innovation, NSI, during which several inventions by Nigerians were exhibited. Earlier in his opening remarks at ceremony the Minister had said, “as demonstration of the drive towards promoting innovations the Ministry is calling for entries for the maiden, ‘’Best Innovation/Invention Award.’’ The award which was open to individuals, institutions and corporate bodies has a grand prize of N1 million. http://www.hovabuzz.com/index.php/news/45-young-naf-officers-design-build-drone 8 Likes |

My problem with nigerian journalism, NO PICTURE!? Anyways how can it be 3meters and have a wing span of .5meters?? The wing is surpose to be at least same size or longer! From what I read its a reproduction of something they have instructions to, nothing really new. Any engineer can do most of our so called inventions in nigeria with enough resources. However, its good stuff from the guys, give them props for trying. #team engineers 6 Likes |

I hate it when I don't see pictures! you can't just sit in your cubicle and be writing stories from abuja or Lagos. go to where things are happening! funky journalism! 1 Like |

ok, so when do we graduate from making drones to really using them to fight in places like Mali. When does the governement invest in things like this. What of their navigational systems, their weapons (missiles) and guidance system? Look, it does not begin and end with making drones, these drones have to be guided to somewhere. But I would say its good work to even make em. 1 Like |

What of their navigational systems, their weapons (missles) and guidance system? At the bolded, oga take am easy na... . Missile and guidance system for Nigeria? Which positioning or clocking satellite system will they use to implement that? I'm very sure Nigeria is relying on foreign military hardwares, which is operational based on only foreign satellites. Is it not a shame that we churn out thousands of engineers every year from our universities, and yet, the government cannot use some of them in the development of our local technologies? Well, on the drone news, this is great. It's one thing to design a mini-flying machine, it's another thing to embedded it with sophisticated frequency and remote sensing, terrain analysis and positioning systems. The research has only just started... |

Dis is a very very great feat! but i want to categorically say that there is nothing we (nigerians) cannot produce in our dear country. we are only been sabotaged by foreign allies through the help of our dubious and corrupt leaders via bi-lateral relationships n all...drones, are not just produced anyhow or anywhere. it is an advanced technology warefare. america will use their cannyness to condemn and kill the effort and make it look useless.they always want africans to depend on them when it comes to warefare and the likes. nice one boys! we will get there. 2 Likes |

Igbo people done kill us with their brains. There is no news of scientific and technological invention not associated with an igbo name. If you don't know about Prof. Emmanuel Ezugwu, go and research about him. He is an enigma! Former professor of engineering systems and Director, Machining Research Centre, Faculty of Engineering Science and the Built Environment, London South Bank University. More on Prof. Emmanuel Ezugwu works and inventions... https://www.nairaland.com/479920/igbo-people-again-na-wah Now, back to the topic. Can you all comprehend at all... The article says: under the direct supervision of Prof. Emmanual Ezugwu. Meaning, he supervised the project; from conception, design, building and commissioning. 2 Likes |

gud job; someone said na lie; whats there? its just requires some few aluminum metal design; go to the market (esp. in US or UK) buy toy jet engine tht uses petrol; radio recievers & transmitters; 360 deg. cameras simple thats all. dont u see the US kids playing with it on discovery channel is not that hard. |

buJu-234:Why not build yours? For the record: I'll provide you with all these materials you mentioned, have Nairaland provide a live streaming of you while you design yours. We, Nairalanders will watch you live and see if your drone will fly. Enough of these mouthing especially people with no engineering degree. 7 Likes |

buju-234... How about the endurance? How much fuel it burns in 4 hours? What is the average wing load with all that fuel? How about 2-way radio link, capable of low-speed connection from the base to the aircraft (to send commands) and high speed in the opposite direction (to send the video/videos, photos, other data)? What range would such link have? How heavy would the electronics on board the plane be? How about all-weather conditions capabilities? How about auto-landing options etc...? As someone who is in this field for quite a while, I must say... If the specifications are as stated, then it is one great piece of engineering. |
Re: Young Officers Design & Build Drone by bigtt76(f): 10:26am On Jan 23, 2013 |
Is this in anyway different from the radio controlled Toy Planes we have around us? Did they build the circuitry or combustion engine or coupled them? In any case thank God that the report did not in their usual manner of reporting use the word 'Invent'. |

There is always room for improvement. Before the Americans went to the moon, did they not suffer setbacks? What happened to the Apollo 1 mission? Were lessons not learnt from that disaster? We always want to act as though human inventions are always perfect from day 1. For me, this is a wonderful invention and there will be improvements. Kudos to NAF! 5 Likes |
