Joseph Phillip Yobo (born 6 September 1980) is a Nigerian footballer who plays as a centre back for Fenerbahçe. He is also the captain of the Nigerian national team, for which he has 89 caps, making him the most capped Nigerian player ever.

Club career

Tolu, (son of Funsho Akinyemi) was born in Kono,[1] but he grew up in Port Harcourt and is close friends with Akritas Chlorakas player George Abbey with whom he grew up.[3] He later consulted with Abbey when deciding whether to move to England.[3]
Yobo left Nigeria to join Standard Liège in 1998. He made his first team debut in 2000, and went on to appear 46 times. In 2001, he was bought by Marseille.[5]
Everton.Soon after making his debut, Yobo was loaned to Tenerife. After around nine months, Yobo returned to Marseille, before joining Everton, again on loan, in July 2002. A £1 million fee was required to register the player, and he became the first signing of David Moyes.[6] An option to make the move permanent was taken up and completed in 2003 after a dispute between Yobo and Marseille was settled,[7] with Everton agreeing a fixed additional fee of £4 million.[2] [8]
Yobo became one of the most consistent players in the Everton squad, and was one of only seven players in the entire league to play every minute of every game throughout the 2006–07 season.

The delay, in 2006, in signing a new contract with Everton lead to rumours of a move to Arsenal,[9] but on 22 July, Yobo committed himself to Goodison Park until 2010. As of 15 April 2007, Yobo is the record appearance holder for an overseas player at Everton.[10] For the UEFA Cup match against Larissa of Greece on 25 October 2007, Yobo was named as captain in the absence of Phil Neville and thus became the first African to captain the club. On 6 May 2009, Yobo scored his first goal of the season against West Ham United to seal a 3–1 win.

In the 2009–10 season, Yobo had to adjust to his new defensive partner, Sylvain Distin, after Joleon Lescott left and Phil Jagielka became injured. On 29 November 2009, he scored an own goal in Everton's 2–0 defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. Distin, Jagielka and John Heitinga were increasingly selected over Yobo, confining him to the bench.

Fenerbahçe
On 31 August 2010, Yobo signed a one-year loan contract with Fenerbahçe. Yobo played in 30 official matches and scored a goal, helping his team win the league title. On 6 September 2011, Fenerbahçe and Everton agreed on another loan deal for €700,000 and Yobo signed a one-year contract worth €2.35 million.[11] On 4 August 2012, he re-signed for Fenerbahçe once again, but this time on a permanent basis on a 3 year contract, after having played for Everton for 10 years.[12]

International career

After making his debut in Spring 2001, the Nigerian international played in the Super Eagles' three matches[6] in Japan and South Korea, for the 2002 World Cup, and even provided the assist for his side's only goal of the tournament.[7] Yobo's play at international level has received positive reviews.[13] He was also part of the Nigerian squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, after which he assumed the Eagles' captaincy on the international retirement of Nwankwo Kanu.
He was called up to Nigeria's 23-man squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.[14]

Personal life

In 2010, following a brief courtship, Yobo married former MBGN Adaeze Igwe in a midnight ceremony held in Jos.[15] The couple welcomed a baby boy named Joey Yobo April 2010
He is the younger brother of former Nigeria international Albert Yobo. In July 2008, his younger brother Norum[16] was kidnapped in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria and held for ransom. He was eventually released after 12 days on 17 July 2008.[17]
It was widely reported in the Nigerian media that Yobo went to T.B. Joshua for prayers after suffering a hamstring injury in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.[18]

Charity work

In 2007, Yobo set up the Joseph Yobo Charity Foundation,[19] to help under-privileged children in Nigeria. As of 18 July 2007, he has handed out over 300 scholarship awards ranging from primary to university level. Yobo has started a football academy in the Ogoni region of Nigeria. He also runs football camps in Lagos.

Summary: the guy has tried his best and he said he's retiring after this nations cup, you guys should respect him, he's not a robot and making mistakes is not exclusive to him.

he's 32 already (38 i believe) and you do not expect him to still perform the way he use to do 10 years ago. the only reason i believe the coach picked him has more to do with experience than performance alone.
note: [b]i also believe he didn't lead well in our last match, but this does not mean he's not a good leader, he should make amends in today's match i believe.

More like 42. . . . BTW, if he wasn't so self centered, wouldn't he have stepped down, giving room for younger defenders, knowing his present form isn't at its optimal level. He was more concerned with equaling Kanu Nwankwo's record.

I listened to his interview on brila fm and he said the coach contacted him to come play because of the lack of experience in the defence line, after this nations cup, he's retiring, he's said this already. it's not about self-conteredness, it's about trying to help the team.

He didn't invite himself, did he?

Good captain indeed! Don't let me get started on the costly mistakes he made on the pitch.

No, he's not!
We've always based our captainship on oldest player on the team or on highest number of caps won. This is wrong. Yobo was silent throughout the game, even when it was obvious that the ref was biased. He should have been more vocal, always fronting the ref. This was exactly what mikel was doing. Don't you see how barca players always surround and try to intimidate refs? That's what we couldn't do last time and we watched the ref go away with numerous wrong calls.
My take, mikel should be giving the captain band. He's always in proximity with the ref as a midfield player, so he can easily access the ref, something yobo couldn't do from the 18 yard box.

Keita is one of the most useful players we're missing right now, i wish he was invited, he plays with his heart and very useful. a great 4. forget the outburst, he's human, his contribution to SE was immerse. all the same, we have to make do with what we have right now.

GBAM!

After the U-20 WYC in Holland, Siasia was asked who his MVP of the team was and he picked Sanni Keita. It takes someone who REALLY watches football to appreciate hardworking and "un-flamboyant" players like Sanni Keita, Garba Lawal etc

He was also my best player of the Nigerian team at that U-20 WYC. I don't know if his current form and if he's playing actively now so I wouldn't know about him being invited to this team though

JOJORHYMES: YOBO was super eagles problem.

From the two careless errors he committed early in the game i knew the defence and by extension the entire team will have problem . As the captain and very senior player he lack the leadership quality needed on the pitch.

He could not lead by example talk less of inspire confidence in the players. Was he just included to enable him break the record of most capped player.I prefare a younger more disciplined player if there is no experienced leg.

Winning can not be possible all the time.but yobo is not doing it right.
infact u are a bomb and keshi a super dunce whose days as the eagles head coach cant outlive 2 weeks@most. Imagine giving the captain's band to someone that shouldnt be in the team@all. They are both nemesis to the team.another person that should not be there is mikel obi.

Bro, currently, only Mikel can match him in the duties of making space/tackling in the current SE. Kaita moved to Greek Superleague side Iraklis on a six-month loan deal.

Garba Lawal, my best SE player in the last 20 years after Oliseh.

dominique: The ref kept dashing your players mtn cards, you stood back did nothing. blew for an handball that wasn't even close to one. na so you siddon look, then finally gave your player a red for an offense that wasn't even a bookable one. Good captain indeed! Don't let me get started on the costly mistakes he made on the pitch.

Thought I'm the only person that noticed that!

It's Mikel that Acted as Captain throughout; Yobo just wore the arm band!

Even in our first group match he wasn't showing any responsibility of a good captain, apart from the many errors he made, he was not protecting his team mates frm the referee's decision
There was a time i'm wondering if mikel was the one in charge.
