Saudi preacher gets fine and short jail term for raping and killing daughter

Public anger has gripped Saudi Arabia after a prominent preacher who raped and beat to death his 5-year-old daughter was sentence to a few months in jail and a $50,000 fine – known as 'blood money' – to compensate the victim's relatives.

­According to (Wahhabi/Salafist interpretation of) Islamic law, the 'blood money' can be paid in lieu of the death penalty. The preacher's fine was reportedly half the usual amount because the victim was a girl.

Saudi preacher Fayhan Ghamdi, a frequent guest on (Wahhabi/Salafist) Muslim TV networks, confessed to using cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, AFP reported, quoting activists from the group ‘Women to Drive.’

Ghamdi reportedly doubted that his daughter, Lama Ghamdi, was a virgin, and forced her to undergo a medical inspection.

In December 2011, Lama was admitted to hospital with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs and left arm, and extensive bruising and burns, according to the activist group. Hospital worker Randa Kaleeb said that the girl's back was broken, and that she had been raped "everywhere."

­The hospital told the victim's mother that her child's “rectum had been torn open and the abuser had attempted to burn it closed,” AFP reported on Saturday.

In October 2012, the girl died from her injuries. The following November, the father was arrested. The judge ruled that the "blood money and the time the defendant had served in prison since Lama's death suffices as punishment," activists reported.

The incident sparked public anger in Saudi Arabia, prompting an online Twitter campaign calling for more severe punishment for violence against women and children. The 'Women to Drive' campaign, launched by women's rights activist Manal Sharif, has demanded the creation of legislation that would criminalize violence against women and children.

The petition is circulating on Twitter under the hashtag 'Ana Lama' – "I am Lama" in Arabic.

The issue has gained widespread traction in Saudi Arabia, and authorities promised to set up a 24-hour hotline that will take calls regarding child abuse.

the man was convicted based on saudi arabia's "puritanical" wahhabi/salafist interpretation of Islamic law. if it was an indonesian maid that kills her saudi employer,after abusing her (as it did happen months ago), she would be sentenced to death by beheading with a sword. but here you got a rich saudi wahhabi killing his daughter.and based on wahhabi/salafist interpretation of "islamic texts",if the father kills his daughter,he would be imprisoned and fined only.and based on the same way of interpretation had the mother killed the daughter,the mother would be killed.

hope you can see reason as to why we (Shia) are opposed to wahhabism/salafism.at least this is one more reason among the many.

this is indeed another attempt by saudi wahhabis/salafists to give Islam and Muslims a bad image,in addition to their terrorism and extremist ideologies most terrorists around the world work on.

but what is the objective of reporting this story
If this report had been favourable to "wahhabism", would a Shia have reported it
Does this report add to or detract from Islam?

Whenever I see a Christians post negative report about a muslim community (which may not be due to those people being muslim or their action may not be based on Islamic principles), I say to myself "will they be good enough to post favourable report about Islam or muslim communities"?

Now here we have this very convenient report to imply, as usual, that Shias are the good guys, actually the overriding objective of the activities of Shias in this section

The royal family has taken up the case of
child abuse by a Saudi celebrity cleric
who confessed to the beating death of
his 5-year-old daughter. The royal family
intervened in the case after online
activists called for harsher punishments
after reports that the cleric received
only a light sentence.
The Independent newspaper on
Wednesday quoted The Times as saying
that the Saudi Justice Ministry has issued
a statement. The statement said the
"cleric remained in prison and the case
was continuing".
The Times reported sources in the Saudi
capital Riyadh as saying the royal family
had been "stung" by the outrage over
the case, with senior members
intervening to ensure a stricter
punishment is given.
"The royal court is now looking at the
case. He will stay in prison for a long
time," The Times quoted a source as
saying.
The social media campaign gaining
momentum is the latest attempt to use
the Internet to pressure the kingdom's
ultraconservative rulers.
Saudi media reports say Fayhan al-
Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Islamic TV
programs, was arrested in November on
charges of killing the girl. The reports
said he questioned the child's virginity.
Saudi media said he was freed after
serving a short prison term and agreeing
to pay $50,000 in "blood money" to
avoid a possible death sentence. The
money was presumably offered to the
