It’s Rewarding to be racist

When somebody mentions Institutional racism immediately the Metropolitan Police comes at the forefront of the mind and how the service appallingly dealt with murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Institutional racism goes deeper than that; one has to look at all professions not just the police. Below is an example where it is astonishing that someone of the Legal profession found to be racist is allowed to carry on with his career unhindered whilst being protected by the institution, in this case, the local authority to which we all pay our taxes and the Law Society.

Rajwinder Singh, a solicitor, of Sikh ethnic origin, was employed by London Borough of Camden in its Legal Department, first as a locum from October 1996 and then from December 1997 as a Commercial Litigation Solicitor. He had an excellent record of work. However, he resigned on 7th March 2000, claiming constructive dismissal. In July 2000, he put in a claim at the London central Employment Tribunal.

On 18th February 2003, the Tribunal at London central in giving a unanimous decision found that Rajwinder Singh was constructively dismissed and found that his immediate boss, Richard Gruet, discriminated against him on racial grounds because he bullied and harassed him. But Mr Gruet’s boss, Ursula Taylor was cleared of discrimination, although the tribunal found her to be “vindictive and spiteful” towards Mr Singh. The tribunal also found that Alison Lowton (Camden’s borough solicitor with overall responsibility for the legal department) did not take Mr Singh’s complaint seriously or support him, so much for her alleged ‘open door policy’ that she operated for Gruet and Taylor but closed the door on Singh. Camden then launched an internal inquiry which the tribunal described as “flawed and a sham” by concluding that “there was a closing of ranks of his managers in order to show him in a bad light. The investigation was used to discredit him (Mr Singh).” The tribunal decision also stated “We did not find Mr Gruet, Ms Lowton and Ms Taylor to be credible witnesses.” The tribunal awarded Mr Singh £25,000 damages.

Any person who has suffered discrimination will know that the above is a reality for many but it is very difficult to prove to middle aged, middle class white people sitting in judgement on tribunals benches who in the main tend to believe the employer than the employee. As they tend to think, as any normal person would think, that a person in a high position with lots of responsibility would not dare discriminate, the reality is that people do discriminate and they do get away with it.

During this period Mr Singh’s health suffered as he was stressed, could not sleep and lost weight. His litigation against the council had cost him £16,000. Whilst those who discriminated against him were being protected by the institution, further taxpayer’s money was then used to put in an appeal to the Employment Appeal Tribunal.

In a local paper a spokeswoman for Camden council said “Camden Council is deeply committed to its valuing diversity policies. We stand by our assertion there was no discrimination in this case. We will be appealing, so cannot comment further.”

In July 2003, the Employment Appeal Tribunal took five minutes to dismiss the appeal by Camden council after four hours of legal arguments. Not learning the lessons, Brian Langstaff QC on behalf of Camden council immediately asked the tribunal’s permission to mount a further appeal. This was turned down.

In a local newspaper a spokeswoman for Camden council said: “We cannot discuss details concerning individual employees, but the council always considers lessons from any Employment Tribunal case.” At last may be not.

[b]No disciplinary action whatsoever was taken against any of those named in the Employment Tribunal judgement, not even against the main discriminator, Richard Gruet. What happened next is even more sickening.

In 2004 Richard Gruet was made head of Litigation at Camden council where he remained there till 2005 when he was appointed Deputy Borough solicitor at Hounslow council. When Terry Welsh retired in 2011 as the Borough solicitor, Richard Gruet was promoted and now holds the title of Chief Legal Officer with a salary band of £90,130 - £106,036. One of his functions is to:

Promote equality of opportunity and the recognition of diversity in the delivery of services and in employment practices

Hounslow is one of the most culturally diverse areas in the UK, with a 40% ethnic minority population of mostly Sikhs and where 140 different languages are spoken. Any person who makes a decision as to who to appoint as the Deputy Borough Solicitor or even the Chief Legal officer surely must have looked into the background of the candidates in particular Richard Gruet. It is a bit like putting a rapist in charge of rape investigations.

What does this case tell us? It tells us that if you discriminate you will be looked after, it tells us that people who are appointed to look at equality and fairness are not doing their jobs, it tells us that the Law Society will turn a blind eye to its racist members worst of all it tells us that unlimited amounts of taxpayer’s money will be used to protect bigots working for the government.

So much for an equal and fair Britain where those who discriminate get promoted whilst the victims suffer. [/b]

There are many in UK who are small minded bigots, prejudiced , they may have valid points but they misplace them on people who arent causing the problem.. The here girl is paying £13,000 tuition, thats not a poverty claim for charity..

My one visit to the UK from USA as a USA citizen with USA passport happened to fall during the ethnic protest and riots over immigrant communities demanding a peice of the social benefits of UK..
Many of the rioters were from east african immigrant communities, and as such, the news bulletins were filled with warnings to stay away from the people who look like the east african rioters.
That was the straw that broke open the dam for the white bigots prejudice and fear mongers... I was an american new in town on my first day, unaware of what was going on ,and people were refusing to accept me as a customer in their stores to eat or buy something.. I found places eventually but only after a few ignorant bigots treated me like someone i was not, just based on skin color... There was even a black lndoner born and raised and he was shouting to be heard and understood that he was not one of the rioters or trouble makers.. The shop keeper just refused him any way because of general hate for black people good or bad...

I was entering a train station later ,and a white man grabbed his white woman and they hurried off as he pointed at me across the road and said i was one of the hostiles.. I had no clue what he meant, i did not even know about the riots, it was my first day in London.. I went in the station and the station people cleared out around me because that deluded man had run in and told everyone "a hostile was coming".. I still did not understand what was going on.. So i went to a police officer and asked if he knew a good place to eat, he heard me speak and said " oh you are american".. I said "yes its my first day in london".. He pointed a place for me to eat and then told the crowd that i was american and all was ok.. I still did not understand what was going on.. I saw people coming to gather to look at me, so i looked and saw some fine white girls commg to look at me, so i waved and smiled at them.. They giggled and ran off.. I was feelng good about myself either way..

I was in the restaurant afterwards eating when a white londoner man came in looking like a drug addict and desperate, and he started harrassing me -asking me "where is my free share, when am i going to get some?" I told him not now ,and he asked "well then when? Thats when i shook my head in refusal of his prescence..I knew he was not right and desperate for drugs, using the chaos to hustle some drug fix money.. Then the police officer came in and told him " dont be stupid, he is american visiting as a tourist"..

I finally went back to my hotel for the night and saw on the tele news cast, what was going on.. Only then did the whole day's events make sense..The news cast was warning londoners to avoid any one who looked like a rioter, to just ignore them and not add any fuel to their fire..
I was being treated like one of the rioters and i didnt even live in London and it was my first day there coming from america..
The next morning i left london on the train through ParisFrance and enjoyed the rest of my 2 week holiday in Spain.. That was nice and by the time my return trip to london to catch my flght back to USA, the issues had subsided...

I lived in Nigeria for 8 years of my life in the rural state of Ondo. I never feared for Jungle justice there like I did in London that one time.. They were ready to roast me with no question as to my identity or status in the matter at hand... And i wasnt always the good a perfect young man when i was in Ondo state Nigeria, and yet I feared more for jungle justice that day in London at the hands of bigoted and ignorant white people ready to act drastically to a false idea in reaction to skin color.. Dont ever forget, they come from a heritage of witch hunters who falsey accused each other of witchcraft and burnt each other at the stake or drowned in rivers or stoned and so on... They may be more civilized today in general Order, but the ingnorant mentality behind all that is still there under the surface of many people, waiting to jump out and wreak havoc, jungle justice style.
