Lagos State Government has said it will shut Ladipo Market in Mushin Local Government indefinitely because of the degradation of the environment by the traders.

Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, said on Tuesday that arrangement had been concluded for the closure.

He said the government was concerned about the environmental nuisance always created by spare parts dealers in the market.

Bello spoke during an inspection tour of drainage projects across the state in preparation for the 2013 rainy season.

The commissioner, who was accompanied by the Chairman of the state Task Force on Environment and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Bayo Sulaimon, said the government would not continue to fold its arm and watch the environment being degraded by dealers.

Bello said, “In Ladipo Market, the traders have taken over the road, carrying out commercial activities and dumping refuse indiscriminately in the drainage channels.

“You can see what they have turned this market into. You can see the environmental nuisance created by the spare parts dealers. Government is not going to allow this.

“Any moment from now, we are going to seal off the market indefinitely, if they do not comply with the state environmental law.”

He also said structures built on drainage channels would soon be demolished, assuring residents of Mushin of early completion of all ongoing projects to reduce floods in the area.

Other projects inspected are Fakuro/Fagbnro downstream, proposed construction of the mid-stream of Fagbenro/Takuro/Ewunni/Paul Okunola/Mushin Itire collector drain; Eleja Primary School drain, and rehabilitation project of System 6c in Abeokuta Street.

I did not support the shutting down of Ladipo market. We have thousands of youths gainfully employed there.Shutting down the market will mean throwing these youths out to the street without work. And an idle mind...;Instead of shutting down the market, they should give the market authorities some compliance directives to follow after which defaulters will be dealt with seriously. Lagos state should think twice before this action.

If government don't want them in that area they should provide an alternative place or they should properly monitor the cleanliness of the environment. If there are illegal structure that degrade the environment they should ASAP without prejudice.

I'm all for cleanliness and hygiene which is important. The local govt should also consider it's responsibilities in providing sustainable infrastructure and sanitation teams.

Lest we forget markets are naturally dirty places and putting all the blame on the traders and then threatening an economical hub with closure is weak leadership and cowardice disguised as strength. What will you achieve besides creating yet more unemployment and then breeding crime?

I wish to stay optimistic about Nigeria but but it seems political leadership is bereft of all sanity!!

I just finished chatting online with someone and our topic was the recent robbery in Anthony area where some robbers came with AK-47s....to vandalize cars. Its now serious biz and we know their patrons are hidden amongst the spare-part traders in Ladipo. My parting shot was "That Ladipo needs to be santized". Lo and behold, i open up Nairaland and i spot this topic.

Its a welcomed development, cos I went to that market once some years ago and it was terrible. Those traders are careless about their environment.

After Alaba, Ladipo is the second most important market for Igbo traders in Lagos. Personally, it smells like ethnic cleansing in the making. In a very filthy city like Lagos, one wonders why Ladipo is being made a scapegoat in this particular situation.

I don't know any market in Lagos that is not dirty. If Ladipo can be closed then 90% of markets in Lagos deserve to be shut down #justsaying

Kudos to LASG!!!

Traders must learn to keep their environment tidy!!!!

I remember how some weeks ago some traders in Benin City also had their shops locked for failing to abide by simple sanitation laws.

If the traders aren't ready to comply with the environmental law, then their shops should be closed... PERIOD!!!

If you can't obey the simple laws of a state, pack ur luggage and teleport to ur Village ASAP!!

cheesy cheesy

That's the effect of 'population pressure' in Lagos, many people just want to come and 'die' in Lagos for the fun of it! To some, even though they are dying business-wise for them to tow the path of honour and prayerfully seek for greener pastures somewhere else they just preferred to keep hoping and before you know it they will get trapped and eventually too old to make any meaningful decisions, the idea is if you are in a place and you are counting 2, 3 years and things are not jelling, scram before it is too late! cool
