No fewer than 20 Boko Haram suspects awaiting trial in Kuje Prison, Abuja on Wednesday protested against the delay in their trial.

The inmates, who expressed their displeasure to the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, when he visited the prison, claimed they had been in detention for a period of one year without trial.

The Boko Haram suspects were arrested in Kano and Borno states on the suspicion of having links with the sect.

They told the minister to provide additional vehicles to the Kuje Prisons to facilitate movement of inmates to court for trial.

Speaking on behalf of other inmates, an inmate who did not disclose his name, said he has spent eight year in the prison, and blamed the slow justice delivery system on the congestion in the nation’s prisons.

He said he had been to court for more than 57 times within the period.

The inmate therefore urged the minister to use his power to fast track the justice system in the country, adding that “not all inmates in the prison are criminals.”

Moro assured the inmates that the Federal Government was working on modalities to improve on the justice system by establishing a special trial court within the prison environment.

Findings indicate that the facility which housed about 560 inmates has two vehicles to convey inmates to court.

Supposed - criminals should be given speedy trials, else there should no basis of holding them continually in prisons.

FG, put your house in-order and de-congest our prisons! undecided undecided undecided

Chiover, cool down! smiley smiley Lets think here, these people according to the piece are Boko Haram

SUSPECTS. In a court of law, they are innocent until PROVEN guilty. Lets

not be too hasty and kill the innocent, just like Aluu 4.

The problem here is their continued incarceration without trial.

It's only a wicked and unjust society that will keep a poor man in detention indefinitely, while the big time criminals are either not arrested at all or released in no time on bail. These people are tagged boko haram to justify their indefinite detention. If they hav committed any offence, they should be tried otherwise they must be released. For those who will support the unconstitutional detention of a fellow human being, let them know that one day they may also be victims of state injustice.

One year is enough to gather enough evidence to prosecute suspects. If the government has acquired such evidence, it should go ahead with the prosecution immediately; otherwise, they should be released.
