The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offenses Commission on Tuesday in Abuja took its campaign against corruption to the nation’s universities, with a vow to prosecute lecturers and administrators who sexually harrass students.

The commission also said it would invite proprietors of illegal satellite campuses for questioning and make them face prosecution if their explanation for running such “cash factories”, despite warnings by the National Universities Commission, were not satisfactory.

The chairman of ICPC, Mr. Ekpo Nta, stated this at a news conference and presentation of its University Systems Study Review jointly undertaken with NUC where he gave an executive summary of the rot that had eaten deep into the university system.

He said some of the negative trends in the universities included delay in the take-off of lectures by lecturers; continuation of illegal operation of satellite campuses by universities; lack of due process in the appointments and promotion of university staff members; racketeering in the allocation of bed spaces to students and undue stagnation of certain persons in certain positions.

This, he noted, tended to lead to unhealthy developments in the university setting.

Ekpo said, “We have looked at the policy which will be circulated on the growing case of sexual harassment. No student in any Nigerian University will be forced to engage in any immoral activity. We will address this issue and put a stop to it. Any lecturer who indulges in it, will be prosecuted accordingly.

“We’ve looked at a policy in a particular university and sanctions would be applied. The details would be circulated within the week. Students must not be forced into immorality because of marks or other favors.”

According to him, ICPC has taken up some of the other components of the responsibilities of the Commission.

He said, “Part of the responsibility of the Commission is the Systems Study of Ministries, Departments and Agencies and give directives on how to correct those shortfalls. The battle against corruption is a global collective agenda.”
