The European Union has given the green light for the sale of a medication that will help quench the urge for alcoholics to drink, the companies behind the new treatment said Thursday.

Selincro, developed by Finland's Biotie Therapies, reduces "alcohol consumption by approximately 60 percent" or about a bottle of wine a day after six months, Danish drugmaker Lundbeck said.

With the go-ahead from the European Commission, Lundbeck, which will manufacture the medication, said it expects to launch Selincro by the middle of this year.

Selincro is mainly aimed at reducing alcohol dependence in adults who drink heavily -- consuming up to six drinks a day -- but who do not suffer from withdrawal symptoms or need detoxification.

"Selincro is thought to reduce the reinforcing effects of alcohol, and thereby reduces the urge to drink alcohol," Lundbeck said.

Lundbeck said excessive alcohol consumption is a world-wide problem, especially in Europe where it said more than 14 million people are dependent on alcohol.

How will they companies producing alcoholic drinks take this news?

SMH ,if you think a medication is going to quench the thirst for alcohol,
1, is it going to be free or would a drunkard prefer to use his money to go and buy a drug instead
2, would this not be addictive, and just replace the alcohol addiction
3,what are the side effects?


I personally don't think a medication can cure a bad habit if the individual doesn't make effort to curb it. read suggestions for getting over bad habits, here

Something u can't stop urself, adding any drug which is even made with marijuana leaves and seeds (98% of them) in d name of medication is another body destruction. It must surely have a side effect.

The "nicotine patch" stops the urge for smoking cigarettes...don't know about being effective for marijuana.The patch works but...instead of getting the nicotine thru smoking you absorb it thru the skin. Methadone is prescribed to get people off heroine but...is just switching from one addiction to another. Treatment for alcohol?..am not surprised...same thing...one addiction for another.
