Haba, my Ijaw brother, Itsekiri has a meaning in Yoruba. I am not sure of edo

Itsekiri "Itse ki irin" Which mean people that walk about/ or people that migrate about. This is Ijebu BTW and part and parcel of Ijebu history. I am not Ijebu but I know some of these stuffs.

Itsekiris themselves are Ijebus more like Ijebu igbo is to Ijebu Ode.

Presently we still have touches of Itskiris in Lagos and other parts of yorubaland inculding Ogun and Ondo. Infact if you understand Ijebu or Itsekiri, you can soeak vice versa

Interesting answer.
Now I see the reason why the itsekiri leadership won't admit to this answer; because it portrays them as "migrants" which goes against their "warri-is-our-homeland" philosophy/slogan/motto which is the essence of their lives and existence.

It is really understandable what the Itsekiris are doing. For people in their position without historical foothold on a land, a more aggressive, crooked, misleading, sympathy-attracting philosophy would do the magic to ensure the continous stay in the land they are squatting on. Even the Israelis that have historical hold on Jerusalem and other Jewish areas in Palestine won't dare to do what the Itsekiris are doing in the 3 Warri LGAs. Itsekiris should learn from the Israelis.

Well since Alh. Harem is having all the answers for the itsekiri people, pls tell us the REAL HISTORY of the itsekiri people with reference to EXACT DATES & how the Ijaws they met in the riverine area, accommodated and shielded them from Bini prosecution became CUSTOMARY TENANTS.

Which group in Nigeria aren't migrants? Everyone is a migrant. Nobody has lay claim to have lived in a particular place since the inception of the world.

Migration is different from possesing a territory. To possess or inhabit a territory means the territory must be a virgin land without prior occupants. So what you call "migration" is indeed expansion ( not encroachment) just as the case of large groups like Yoruba, Igbos etc. And expansion stops when they meet the boundary of a people different from them in all ramifications, as such any subsequent migration into someone else's territory, you would be seen as an alien. You don't and can't expand your territory onto someone else's territory unless you're prepared for war.

Migration is seen as an INFLUX of foreign people into a territory already occupied by a people which are either accommodated or resisted depending on the intentions of the aliens.

So not every people are immigrants, some are real and true owners of a territory - aborigines. And some are not, they are only tolerated.

What are you suggesting - kick Itsekiri out because they 're not 'aborigines'? There's nothing wrong with Itsekiri being a subset of Ijebu or whatever. Itsekiri may have started as Yorubas but today could be 40% Ijaw, 30% Isoko, 5% Yoruba, and remaining% whatever. Ethnicity is more like diffusion of gaseous molecules, with time it disperses and may not be retracted. It blends with its surroundings perfectly. Every ethnic group is mixed somehow, none of us is pure 'anything.' We all are, to some extent, connected to one another and we all migrated from somewhere. What am I saying - no ethnic group has a superior claim to exist and thrive on a land more than the next neighbouring group.

nwanne m, Thanks for this thoughtful post. If we apply the logic of ijaw_citizen properly, he himself and his Ijaw people will have to return to the garden of eden, after relinquishing all claims to the currently occupied Ijaw "territory". SMH
