THE Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People has said it will not approach the Federal Government for a presidential pardon for late environmentalist and activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and eight others who were hanged by the Gen. Sani Abacha military regime.

MOSOP stated that since Saro-Wiwa and eight of their kinsmen did not commit the offence for which they were killed, it would be inappropriate for them to ask government to grant them (Ogoni Nine) amnesty.

Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists were hanged on November 10, 1995, on the orders of a tribunal set up by the then military regime.

Media Adviser to MOSOP President, Mr. Bariala Kpalap, explained that rather than approach government for pardon, the body had taken steps to demand that the Federal Government should invalidate the ruling of the tribunal that sentenced Saro-Wiwa and eight others to death.

Kpalap, who spoke in a telephone interview on Friday with SUNDAY PUNCH, insisted that the President Goodluck Jonathan-led government must clear the names of the ‘Ogoni Nine.’

Kpalap said, “The fact is that Ogoni people through MOSOP have been asking for the names of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others to be cleared.

“The truth is that if people who were rightly convicted of corruption could be granted presidential pardon, why would the names of those who were wrongfully hanged not be cleared?”

Similarly, the Ogoni Solidarity Forum told SUNDAY PUNCH in an interview that it was not necessary for the people of Ogoni to ask the Federal Government to pardon Saro-Wiwa and eight others.

National Coordinator of the forum, Mr. Celestine Akpobari, described the presidential pardon granted to former Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, and others as an attempt to take Nigeria back to the bad book of Transparency International.

“If such people could be pardoned by the President, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni indigenes that were murdered should at least be on the first list of those to benefit from such gesture.

“Look at the set of people they gave national award. Today, corrupt people worship with Jonathan every Sunday in Aso Rock. But the point is that we are not asking for pardon for Saro-Wiwa; we are asking the Federal Government to quash the judgment against them,” Akpobari stressed.

Yes,misplaced priorities such as giving a convicted felon like Alams and his militant rags tag gun runners amnesty rather than a Ken Saro Wiwa & 8 others who fought the military with only their words and captured global imagination such that till today,Shell has yet to resume oil pumping from there

The people of Ila-Orangun town in Osun State have called on President Goodluck Jonathan to extend state pardon to a former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, saying his conviction was political.

Osun State Chairman of the defunct Justice Party, Mr. Adesoji Adeleke, stated this in a telephone interview with our correspondent, on Friday.

Adeleke, who hails from Obalogbo’s compound, Oke-Jigbo, in Okomo Ruling House, Ila-Orangun, said it was wrong of the Federal Government to leave out Balogun in the state pardon.

He said, “We are contacting all Ila parapo on Sunday with a view to knowing what next step to take on the issue. His travail is not unconnected with the politics of succession at that time.

“Is the pardon of a former Governor of Bayesla State, Dieprieye Alamieyesiegha, the sole reason why President Jonathan extended the pardon to some other select individuals? Osun too deserves to enjoy the pardon. We trust that the President will extend the pardon to Balogun.”

A resident of Ila, Group Captain Raimi Ogunbunmi, also called on Jonathan to pardon Balogun, saying the era of the former IG witnessed unprecedented development in the police force.

Explaining that Balogun was a ‘victim of circumstance,’ Ogunbunmi, said it was wrong to jail Balogun at the time.

I did not know your thinking is this puerile and demented
Regardless of your igbotic delusions that Ibos will enhance equity in Nigeria once one of yours ascends to the top post in the land [when in retrospect they enhanced tribalism after the 1st coup which led to the civil war],
It is your kind and their thinking aka na our oyel money, make our son chop am that is holding this nation back

Alams is a thief
Tafa is a pot bellied thief grin grin
Ken Saro Wiwa is a HERO
A CEREBRAL ONE @ THAT
Something which neither Alams , Ebele or Tafa will ever achieve

What part of my speech don't you comprehend?

The great Ken Psaro-Wiwa of Niger Delta is not a criminal that should be pardoned.

His execution is the greatest injustice ever perpetuated at the height of Niger Delta suppression by the WaZoBia runned Nigerian Contraption.

Ogonis and indeed all Niger Deltans should demand for a presidential apology for this injustice perpetuated on our great hero.

Ken Psaro-Wiwa the great lives on!

It is unfortunate someone thought that Ken Saro-Wiwa was not a criminal. How does a criminal look for posterity sake? I read with amazement as Ken Saro-Wiwa has been labeled as real estate mogul. I know the history of Abandon Property in Port Harcourt and Ken Saro-Wiwa. Which Ogoni land did Ken Saro-Wiwa managed to rise to the status of real estate guru?

I can easily forgive anybody accused of embezzlement however I am not that forgiving when it comes to murder. Ken Saro-Wiwa was murderer and a person who bit off the finger that fed him.
