Alamieyeseigha's Pardon: Bill Gates Cancels Trip To Nigeria by mukina2: 9:26am On Mar 18, 2013
America’s richest man, Bill Gates, has cancelled his scheduled March 27 official visit to Nigeria, in response to the controversial pardon granted by President Goodluck Jonathan to ex-convicts Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and Shettima Bulama, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report today.

Mr. Gates was due in Nigeria March 27 and 28 to meet President Goodluck Jonathan, state governors and officials of the Federal Ministry of Health concerning the aggressive polio eradication campaign his Bill and Melinda Foundation is undertaking in the country.

That trip, authoritative diplomatic sources said, has now been cancelled, two days after the U.S. government expressed disappointment with its Nigerian counterpart for pardoning convicted money launderers and warned it might cut aid meant for the country.

“I can confirm to you that Mr. Gates won’t be coming as scheduled,” one of our sources told PREMIUM TIMES Monday morning. “The body language of Washington D.C. does not support his travelling to Nigeria. The thinking here is that the Nigerian government has high tolerance level for corruption and should be ostracized in all ways possible.”

Our sources said Mr. Gates has already instructed his staff to inform the Nigerian presidency, the secretariat of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Federal Ministry of Health that he was no longer coming.

Presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, did not answer or return calls seeking comment. Contacted, the Director General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Asishana Okauru, said he would have to check with his staff whether any such communication had come from Mr. Gates’ office. He did not answer or return subsequent calls. Mr. Gates’ office is not opened as at the time of this report as calls were unanswered.

But checks by this newspaper indicate that the U.S. government has dissuaded Mr. Gates from coming to Nigeria.

“The State Department has advised him that Nigeria is not conducive for such visit at this time,” another source said. “We hope that the Nigerian government will get the message and return to the path of sanity.”

Eyaaa, so jona action will cost nigeria of $600m

Nigeria is one of the biggest recipients of US aid in Africa. Last year the US gave Nigeria about $226m in development aid and is expected to spend $600m this year.

i dont even know why Bill Gates is disturbing himself , when the people involved and the people afflicted cant be bothered .
truly you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink, if eradicating polio is not an agenda for the northerners and they are busy killing the poor UNICEF workers who really could be doing something more productive with their time than fearing for their lives , why should anyone be bothered??

It really annoys me that only a few countries (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria- birds of the same feather freaking flocking together)are standing in the way of GLOBAL eradication of this perfectly preventable disease because of their rubbish, stupid beliefs .

i know its a silly idea but i really feel like the Nigerian govt shld look into building a great wall of china-like fence around those infected parts because re infection is a real risk, we really cant afford to have these viral hosts running around and ruining the good work that has already been done .
The rest of us that want the disease eradicated shld not be punished because of a few people with mental issues

insincerenigerian and co. can come on board and rain abuses on Bill Gates next. maybe he is CPC or APC candidate. Mtcheew.

The damage GEJ has done to his international reputation is devastating and PERMANENT. Nigeria on the other hand has a chance of removing GEJ from office and moving on to greater things come 2015.

Money laundering offense is not something that western governments play about nowadays...especially due to the potential of funding terrorists with the money. GEJ just blacklisted his government.

If he has other reasons for changing his mind, he should come out straight and not hide under the US government's disappointment over Alameseigha's pardon?
For crying out loud, what's the correlation between healthcare grants/donations and political matters? Does he have ulterior motives?
To the blazes with Bill Gates and his "assistance". He's not bigger than our country. And we don't need him.
Nigeria has been existing before Bill Gates, and will continue to exist after him. We've been getting grants before his, and we'll surely get grants if he withdraws his.
Who send Bill Gates sef? Who send am?

Why are we always parading our criminal tendencies and orientation to the world without realizing that the global nature of the world has turned all states in the committee of nations into a gold fish. Now there is no end to the penalty and odium that Nigeria has become in the committee of nation states. In an era when there is a global fight against money laundry and financing of global terrorism, our people just acted true to type by blessing the acts of these launderers et all. Again, God, you owe me a personal explanation why you created me a Nigerian.
